I dont understand why everyone thinks that amon being a bender lessens the point. I think it was because of his back story, you understand why he does the things he does. His father was a powerfull bender, a crual one. And he saw trough his father that benders are too powerfull and have to be stopped, even if he is one himself.

Amon being a Bender actually makes him a stronger villain, because it mirrors the hypocrisy of real world tyrants and dictators who rise to power by claiming they wish to help the poor but they end up only exploiting them.

  • @Arohan71

It makes him a weaker villain because this mirrors (and makes true) the charge that gets thrown at equal rights groups all the time is that they are being manipulated by an outside group or force and that they'd be content without that agitation. That this is illogical, as an outside group wouldn't have things to use to manipulate if there wasn't an actual problem doesn't matter. This kind of thing says to the oppressing group that they don't need to listen to anyone because the leader being a bender and a fraud makes them easy to delegitimize. It says non-benders can't be trusted to be accurate recounters of their own experience. During the 60s one of the charges leveled against Black civil rights activists was that the whole thing was a Commie plot.

@@Arohan71 You can be a bender and still think no one should be that privileged. He wasn't incapacitated, he ran away to start a new life. Amon was such a great villain. He was menacing, charismatic, intelligent and complex. He saw his bloodbending as an necessary evil, genuinely believed in his cause, and knew who to go after to garner and maintain a following. And Tarrlok’s actions vindicated his point and gave him ammo. And all the other villains are so well-written that they work, which helps with each book having its own overarching antagonist, instead of a series-wide villain. And him lacking a face until he’s revealed to be Tarrlok’s long-lost brother really makes him scary. And how did Sokka die?

Amon's goal for equlity would be harder because there are two things he can't stop: the spirits and technology. Bending being gone would leave big vaccum in the world that he doesn't realize could throw the world into chaos; the infrastructures that depen on bending would be destroyed and hard to handle and spirits that hated human and didn't want to leave the forest would use this opportunity to take back the world form humans. Lastly, how do we know that all the enemies in the past life of avatars wern't non benders? For all we know someone like Amon, before we learned he was a waterbender, could have risen up to power for very similar reasons or just becase that person power hungry.

Recommendation for next Avatar Series: 1. Next Avatar is a Twin earthbenders - one has Rava's spirit and the other one is only an ordinary earthbender but will later on gibe birth to Vaatu. Since light and dark cannot exist without each other. 2. Another fun plot to the incoming series is that there will be war for benders vs non benders and the conclusion will be separation of spirit world and human world and bending will be taken back thru the avatar and human world will all be non benders.

The short season meant it never really gave this issue the depth it should have. As it is, I didn't find the Equalists very sympathetic. Amon had a backstory that gave an interesting bit of depth to him as a bender who hated bending since it ruined his life. The problem with the rest of the season is that the most we hear about non benders being oppressed is them being killed by criminals. That's it. As things were, the non benders felt more like they were the oppressors. Not helped by the fact they were getting their weapons thank to Hiroshi Sato, a wealthy businessman. A wealthy businessman who was going to still be rich after the revolution. Not saying he was in it for money, but I am saying the Equalists aren't really evening the playing field if they are letting the rich non benders stay rich. You get of the bending in Bai Sing Se, the city is still going to be just as plagued by inequality as it was before. Not to mention we saw Korra stand up for non benders, and the Equalists still treated her as an oppressor. That is really a moment to me where the Equalists felt like they were just more oppressors. If all the Equalists wanted was to overthrow the government that was oppressing them, that would be one thing. But they targeted all benders as "oppressors" regardless of what they were actually doing. We saw Korra actually stand up for benders being oppressed by the government. Do the Equalists care? Of course not, they feel that she still deserved to, essentially be raped. Along with Tenzin's children. I am not trying to use an shocking language, Amon's use of blood bending was a clear rape allegory.

This. Also, Equalists are obviously non-benders supremacists. You know, fascists. The way how they talk about benders isn't much different than how fascists talk about Jewish people, especially how they want to clean them from their "impurities" Imagine calling someone like Hiroshi Sato, who is a successful bourgeois a communist? Oh wait, they completely ignore him... I wonder why? Because their nonsensical political analysis will collapse into nothing. Or calling Mako and Bolin, poor benders that barely made ends meet an oppressors. Every villain in TLOK is some form of fascism: non-benders supremacists, clero-fascism, anarcho-primitivism, Nazism.

The second most import truth is that scarcity and the profit motive are not created by capitalism they are inherent to realitty and any semi sapient species to the point we have even created market systems between monkeys and dolphins through providing the right incentives such as male monkeys learning they can pay female monkeys to mate in exchange for rations for their daily rations.

This is kind of the major problem with the 1st season with Korra. Nothing is done to tackle the inequalities caused by bending. Korra losing her bending was a great way for her to actually learn what non-benders go through. Benders have access to a broader range of economic opportunities as they can do the jobs any non-bender can do and access to jobs only benders can do. Not to mention culture in the Avatar world is based heavily around bending especially in the Fire Nation where the Fire Nation Royal Family practices selective breeding to ensure a strong line of firebenders.

And sure, his revolution wouldn't exactly last, even ignoring the military aspect, as we know that people who've had their Bending removed can still have Bender children, Noatak and Tarrlok being prime examples of the fact, so benders would eventually pop up, even in the unlikely scenario of the Equalists winning against the other nations.

A non-bender could easily just disrupt a bender's abilities because they didn't like that person and cry wolf that the bender was hurting them. It would actually create a stigma against bending and benders. It would then lead to systemic discrimination. Giving non-benders an equal hand to benders is a great idea, but giving the control over benders a disruptor would provide to non-benders isn't the best idea. The problem that I have with this argument is that it ignores one of the comics that actually bring up this very thing. Don’t know the name of the comic but it talks about how with the rise of the industrial period it made nonbenders more equal in the fact that the cultural importance of benders wasn’t as important. This made Katara wary of it because she was noticing the cultural change of her people while she wanted things to stay the same. They even go on to say that it’s because she is a bender and therefore had more cultural importance is the reason she doesn’t like it and to look at it form their perspective. In other words, the center of power in benders was already changing. He see this with Asami’s dad, a non bender rising to great wealth with the rise of industry.

Amon was a charismatic and competent villain that deserved more screen time. If the show were rewritten I think he'd serve better as a season 3 main villain, and dealing with his aftermath in season 2. Ultimately, season 1 would be given to Zaheer and his plots. Give more time to flesh out the backstory of the Red Lotus and their separation from the White Lotus. Heavier flashbacks to adult Gaang fighting them and solidifying Republic City as a nation. Keep his murder of the Earth Queen and attempt on Korra. She has the largest character growth after this event. Sets up for Kuvira imperial power grab (take out the mech though). Follow a story path in general and resolution. Then boom, in comes Amon with harder evidence of benders being bad. The reveal of being a water bender can remain, but that leaves season 4 to deal with the aftermath and how Korra fully learns to be the Avatar of everybody. Very general rewrite does leave out key events but would possibly make the story flow better with existing events

The avatar is there to bring balance between all life, they can’t be biased and have to see what it’s like in their own eyes hence the need for always having a powerless main character in the avatars team. Exactly. Equalists are obviously non-benders supremacists.

If I have ever heard the term "biased protectorate", I do not remember it and I thank you for exposing me to it. Honestly, I am far more fascinated with how we tell history and topics about the power within storytelling than any particular time period or event and I really probably should have known this term but I really hope I remember it too. Thank you.

The real balance in the Avatar world is really not just about the four nations and the benders, but for all. The real balance in the Avatar world is better portrayed by the team Avatars and their allies in the two animated series or seasons, and they all act as a collective icon, role model, and symbol for their world balance. Aang = airbender, Avatar Katara = waterbender Zuko = firebender Toph = earthbender Sokka = non-bender Suki = non-bender Hakoda = non-bender Pakku = waterbender Iroh = firebender Jong jong = firebender Piandao = non-bender Freedom Fighters = non-benders Kioshi Warriors = non-benders Haru and his dad = earthbenders Members of the Foggy Swamp Tribe = waterbenders Uncle Tio and his son = non-benders Other allies and warriors = benders and non-benders Korra = waterbender, Avatar Mako = firebender Bolin = earthbender Asami = non-bender Tenzin = airbender Lin Beifong = earthbender Suyin Beifong and her family = earthbender Kaya = waterbender Bumi = non-bender, later an airbender Opal = non-bender, later an airbender Kai = non-bender, later an airbender Asami's dad = non-bender, first an enemy then later an ally Other allies and warriors = benders and non-benders ...also, in both animated series or seasons, there's always a non-bender member in the core Team Avatar. Sokka for Aang, and Asami for Korra. (Note: Sorry for butchering the spelling of the characters' names, and for forgetting some of their names and other characters.)

amon was right about the inequality but doesn't have an actual solution. as if taking away someone's bending doesnt immediately lead to chaos and violence, as if it doesnt disrupt the economy which is powered by many industries that are heavily reliant on benders. i don't think he's all that smart honestly.

I am actually SUPER interested in your analysis of the bending Subtypes and advanced techniques with premises being an opinion of some sort. ALA Lavabending is the most destructive bending subtype, in the case of AoE. Compared to Bloodbending being the most lethal subtype in terms of 1v1 or 1vsmall group. Could go into how Lightning is the most precise but in effect, the least utilitarian (other than naturally generated electricity and power) and Levitation (for Air), being the least unique (seeing that Firebenders can create organic jet boots for themselves for similar effect) but in terms of symbolism, one of if not the most liberating sub-type.

The fatal flaw to Amon's philosophy is that he thinks people will stop treating one another unfairly once benders are gone. The truth is, we're just as capable of being horrible to one another without bending. Case in point? (gestures vaguely to all of real life)

I mean were Amon’s goals really fake? Obviously at the end of the day he wanted to be the leader and have power, but I never got the vibe that he didn’t truly believe that benders were the problem. He was simply exposed that his powers were from bending not some act of God, but otherwise they never really showed anything that proved he didn’t actually believe in his movement. He’s my favorite villain across the 2 series because I really like the story of revolution and ultimately I feel like the show did him dirty. Like “oh his plans were foiled because Korra unlocked air bending after he took away her other 3 elements, in which she then surprised him and blew him into the water.” How lame.

Chelsea xoxo I would’ve rather seen the benders talk the movement down. Have benders transfer more power to non-benders which they somewhat did but they barely showed it. Basically the non-benders win the power battle but the benders don’t get their powers taken away. Idk it just seemed rushed, the way he got taken out seemed too fast and simple for a character as mysterious as he was. I’m not a writer but you can tell the community agrees to some extent or another, his book is the least favorite in almost every poll I’ve seen.

Although I agree with the statement “non-benders deserve better” I also greatly disagree that Amon was right. He wanted equality by bringing benders down, not by raising non-benders up. I think I better way out of this is technology advancing further where bending no longer becomes necessary. I picture the world of Pixar’s Onward where the effort it took to master magic no longer became worth it when technology could do most things much easier. With the rate of technological advancement in the world of Avatar I don’t think they were that far off of reaching that
