(or any year)" question is really common in korean culture because their whole social system is based off of age so usually if you're the same age as someone else you guys connect with each other more than if someone is older than you and you have to address them formally

yeah and also. You can't be friends with someone older or younger than you. The word chinggu or friend in Korean also means same age. Some people might argue about being friends, but even though they are in a clique they still have to follow their hyungs, sunbaenims etc. It's still different.
