He said it twice, he said 'three' first, then 'free'. He also said just before that he wasn't going to use any language to influence him which I think is a way to make the guy stop totally listening in to what Derren's saying, making his choice of words subliminal rather than obvious.

In the last 6 cup trick you'll notice that the guy mixed all the cups up but arranged them all around cup no. 4 as if trying to hide it within all the other cups. Derren would have noticed that as well as the subtle facial & vocal clues.

Derren already told him to put it under cup number four. He laid them all out in a row and put the fourth one further forward just before he turned around.

It's really funny actually watching Derren play with this guy. He even says "I'm not going to use any suggestible kind of word play with you" or something along those lines, it's just funny because he's doing just that. The entire thing is fantastic. I would love to see this in person..maybe if he brings one of his shows to Canada..;). Either way, I would and wouldn't want to see it in person, cause here I can relive it and watch the hilarity ensue time and time again ;P. Freakin fantastic >_> this guy...

Of course there are many theories about how this is done, I'm sure some are correct, but the truth is that Derren is a fantastic entertainer and watching him is always a joy.

He also said they were evenly spaced, then he places one forward.

When he said "four" he said it faster than the rest, like he "wanted to get the number over with". I've had a friend do this exact trick on me and he read my mind because he said I would speak slightly faster on the number I thought of.

sebastian6736 yeah, Derren is great. they will also have some somewhat famous Magicians come on to sort of "promote themselves" - because P&T are aware of many of them already, even on a personal level, and know they will be fooled. but, I think Derren is at such a level as an entertainer, that he doesn't really "need" to go on Fool Us. though, i think we'd all enjoy it. - to me, he is the UK's Penn and Teller equivalent.

its a easy trick to do, i made a lot of beer that way, it take 2 to do this trick, one is in the mob around the one you need to trick to, he see were the "coin " is hidden derren list the number 1-6 wen no. 4 coms out his m8 signal derren . if you are in a bar the mob stand whit drink and beer nobody see if the m8 take a drink of his beer. its easy to do and if the coin dount get put under the m8 do nothing and it will happen the 3 or 4 times you do it

At the last excercise, Notice how Derren leaves out the 4th cup sticking out a bit. That's the power of suggestion! quite beautiful

The third time it should have been obvious that the only way to fool Darren was to fool yourself, to try to make it so that you yourself didn't know where it where. Accually though that was what he was doing when he jumbled the cups together. I would probably tried something similar but with my eyes closed and before I opened them I would have spun around or something so I wouldn't be sure of the orientation of the cups anymore.

It’s the way he made him count if they have any stutter or bigger breath on one number it’s hat one eg he stuttered on 4 slightly

I can't believe he fell for the fourth cup at the end, it was so obvious that Derren first pointed out that he placed them symetrically and then placed the fourth cup in front of the rest...

He slammed the cups at the end, which could either give him a slight hint on where the bracelet was. Either with sound, or a small bounce on the cup that would make a space enough to distinguish which cup was different.

I think there was a pitch difference in “four” and “five” he later said he was going to turn over 5 and to see a reaction from him to confirm whether it was 4 or 5

Freeze the video at 1:23 and look at the top left of the screen. You can see a guy sitting on the window sill on the second floor of the building across the street. It looks like he's holding binoculars up to his face. He signals Derren as to which cup the bracelet is under. Solved!

There is glass in the background that you can see the reflection with if you look every time he turns

He is very good. Just curious if there was any chance there was a reflection or something he might be looking at when he had his back to the table.

I love how the guy is really Skeptic and tried to catch Derren out but he still gets owned by Derren 😈

Maybe simply someone in the audience signaled the number to Derren. I don't claim it was done that way, but this would be my first suspicion.

***** Possibly. I wonder how many unpublished misses he has with that method. Or this was just a kind of misdirection for the live audience for once and then all that little things for those who will later try to figure out what is going on with the video. Often the easiest explanation is the right one. Cheating is very much part of a magician's repertoire, even though this would be cheap one, not worthy of Derren, so I hope/guess my accusation is incorrect. Good observations on your part though, well done spotting all these details.

+SkytheguyOnGreens The first thing the other guy did was check for reflections etc. His head was also facing down. I think it's far more likely he just played with the guy's head each time. There's very logical reasons he would guess the right answer if you watch carefully.

He tried he's best (probably better then I would... he was a master of "bluffing")... still Derren is the supreme master... but then again... how many times did Derren do this without showing on TV.... you will never know... I guess it was more then once... still he caught him fair and square... and it is awesome...

He isn’t a master of bluffing, unfortunately he made it pretty easy on round 2 and 3. On round 2, Darren starting talking about cup 1. At that point Darren didn’t have to commit to it being there, based on the guy’s response, he could have said ‘but it’s not that one’ and started talking about a different number. But immediately the guy went into ‘concede’ mode and the visual clues easily gave it away. In round 3, you could hear and see that he put the cup in the middle and surrounded it with the rest.

He is probably trained in face reading, notice once he says "4" his cup his eye brow lifts slightly, typically someone will slightly jitter (nose twitch) etc. In these situations

He was peeking

when Derren has 6 vessels before they turn the glass puts the number 4 a little later than the others and that is where the man puts the bracelet.

How about if he had put it under one without looking, so as to not know what number it was?

Notice how in each of all the cups he puts one of the cups unordered from the rest and that's the one the guy picks every time

On the last trick he moved cup number four forward slightly at 2:14 ish and he picked that one

People making wild guesses, such as, "He's looking at the reflection in the shop window" should do some research on 'magic'. Many things that appear to be impossible can be learned by anyone who is willing to put the time in to learn and practice. For example, (unrelated to this trick)... with just a few hours of concentration, a person can learn how to pick up any number of cards from a deck just by using their sense of touch.... You could pick up 13 cards or 25 just by learning how it feels to your fingertips.... Most people don't know that it is a possibility... and because of that, this one skill is the basis for many card tricks... The same goes for 'guessing games'. Derren is totally dedicated to researching and learning these skills and as a result performs amazing tricks. He isn't just looking at a reflection in the window! (Although, as far as he's concerned, he might as well be!)

It's a mind game. The fourth cup was chosen at the initial stage of the third round. Darren pushed that one forward. I don't know how that affected the participant though.

I think you're right. That's probably why he asked him to count to one to six, so he could read him if he didn't manage to influence him.

He suggests four by putting it closer to him and the subject subconsciously places all cups around number 4 to protect it, just to be sure it is 4, Derren bangs a couple of mugs hard enough to wobble 4 to visually confirm it is in there. As he is animated and banging he can catch a peak.

The first test he stressed "one" and his finger is pressed down on number one cup.

I knew he would go for 1 in the second go, and I thought that at first myself. You know that he can tell how you will think though, and instead of swapping I just doubted I would ever be able to catch him out unless the trick involved being there.

I would close my eyes then mix the cups up and put it under a random cup, then open my eyes and put them back in order so even I don't know what cup I put it under

I guessed it was four! he blinked when he said four and his lip curled slightly

The reason the slammed the cups is probably so the other cups "jumps"allowing him to see what's under it

At the 3rd times he basically suggests him to not put again in number 1, and if he did put the lace again in number 1 he would show some apprehensive reaction in his face.

Yes true but when he saw the guy had moved all the cups into a group he couldn't be sure it worked so he used the reading trick to double check. This guy is so good I'm glad he doesn't use his skill dishonestly anymore.

I like how everyone's saying that he's saying numbers while he speaks yet no one has said that when he said evenly spaced for when he was doing 6 cups he put 5 forward, anyone notice that?
