Farrister, you have done it again - a Farristerific video! I like your steady delivery and informative layout of data along with your own admission of proclivities like ballistic weaponry and dissing small shields. :) The small shield thing is funny because they are working as intended in my opinion; smaller ships have them so they need to avoid getting hit or get squished like a fly (which is why the Nomad may have 3?). Anyway, you did a great job like always but have two last observations. First, why did you not start the walkaround at the pickup bed? That bed may be an advantage with dangerous cargo like the upcoming explosive cargo by keeping outside your ship AND likely much easier to eject [button on the dash] without harm to the ship. Last, you missed the three shield generators and two coolers on the living space roof, there is also an area for the two computers closest to the hab exit but that component access cannot open yet. Keep up the good work, Farrister.

It's the best starter ship, hands down. It's the most versatile of them all, it can carry a medium-sized vehicle, it has comfortable looking and useful interior, it even has a tractor beam. Not to mention that it still comes with all the benefits of a small ship and you won't toss it away after you bought something better. Let's not forget the handiness of an open cargo bay too, especially when it comes to parking vehicles. You really can't appreciate this ship enough unless you tried Cutlass Black, which has much longer claim timer, higher operating costs, flies like a brick and looks like a child abductor's van on the inside.

Once you have tried everything (and it doesn't take long) it all becomes a bit repetitive, grindy and sometimes pointless(ie combat)..unless you enjoying doing those aspects over and over or perhaps engage in multiplayer. Also there isn't really all that much exploration as systems and planets are generally all the same and mostly boring. ED also just feels like one instance to another rather than a seemless universe. Hopefully Odyssey will change this. I was hesitant to try SC due to its early development but it really is on a totally different level. For all its bugs and problems, it is a far more immersive and grander experience and feels like you are exploring.

As a jack of all trades, master of none, solo vessel the Nomad really is my ideal starter. I own 2 things in my hangar. A Nomad and a ROC which I purchased with store credit from my previous starter pack I melted. My thoughts here being that when they inevitably wipe I can just head straight to a moon and start making money - I'm the kind of person who sees earning the ships in game as the big goal so I refuse to just go and buy a top grade ship when I can earn it with a bit of work and the Nomad enables that. A couple of things I noted, pretty sure the laser repeaters are Badgers not Panthers but this is nit picking and I thought this was a great a very detailed review! Also it's worth noting it will get a tractor beam on the cargo bed down the line - not sure if that was mentioned, but useful info depending on how they perform. I hope they adjust the touching down force, I feel like it doesn't matter how softly you land it always bang its chin on the ground and that's made of glass!

Nomad is the best starter ship if you can afford it. No contest. If you can’t afford it, run enough missions to get about 50k and then rent a Cutlass Black to put your ROC in. My progression was Aurora, then Avenger, and was just frustrated with the game at that point doing box missions. I suck at combat cause I can’t change the controls to match my Elite Dangerous setup. Then I rented a Cutlass Black and a ROC for a couple days and the game got better. Never really enjoyed the Cutlass though. Big and hard to land in rough terrain sometimes when you need to drop the ROC. Yesterday, I convinced myself to buy the Nomad and stick the ROC in the back of it. Now I’m so mad I didn’t do that sooner. I actually had fun today and made a good amount of money. Nomad is so much easier for ROC mining. Another thing I hated about the Cutlass was how expensive it was to claim and how long it took to arrive. Nomad is a small ship so it’s the same as the Aurora. Actually not a bad combat ship either. It comes with 3 gimballed class 3 guns. And 3 small shields.

Nice review of this ship Farrister. I kind of like this ship, though I've never flown it. I don't have one. It was just one more expense that my budget didn't support. As it is I have several small cargo ships already. I have two different versions of the Avenger Titan, and a Cutlass Black, Red, and the MCR. They all carry cargo, and they are fairly small and can get into most locations. I honestly don't need the Nomad. The one thing I don't like is that external cargo location. Like you said, anyone just looking at it knows what you are carrying. Thanks for the review and keep up the great work. Fly safely and I'll see you in the verse.

I've got this ship as a loaner as a subscriber of Star Citizen and I must say I love this little Tic off a ship for it's maneuverability compared with the cutlass, being much more forgiving in landing and planet flying. I tried the Roc hauling thing but it's a NoNo for me: it falls off 3 times out of 4 despite having more space then my Cutlass Red on the cargo bay with the risk of damaging the ship. The killer role I forsee for this ship is the smuggler when this mechanic will make more sense: with 3x size1 component it can fit some of the stealthies electronics in game, comparable with the 315p but with double the payload, negligible higher signature and more space inside. Too bad that right now a low signature does not do much in game as pirates and law enforcers seems to jump on you spawning from nowhere

The "starter" ships are also useful to us established players who want to go do something where a cutlass upwards isn't the practical choice. I would love there to be a solo mission runner that has medium components. Until then I will Use the 325/Avenger/Nomad/Tana for when I just want something quick and dirty.

I had a Nomad in 3.14 and I wasn't impressed. But for some reason now (in 3.16) I really like this ship. I upgraded one of my ships to a Reliant Kore and got the Nomad as a loaner for some reason so I started flying it around. The entrance animation has been fixed, as well as the truck bed. It's been my daily driver for several days now (I've been evaluating it and the 315p; the 315p is faster and has better fuel mileage, but I like the MFD layout of the Nomad better. Landing lights kinda suck though, and the retro thrusters put up a glare when landing. I wish the hydrogen fuel economy was better though.

The nomad is such a oddball ship. I see people swearing by it but the more i think about it, it's not really a ship that's endearing. It's a stepping stone for the cutlass and an "upgrade" from the Titan. Cutlass makes much more sense as an upgrade from an avenger and the nomad doesn't really offer much when you look at it that way. If it had better fuel efficiency, much better flight model and perhaps a redesign on the whole pilots canopy to make it visually appealing to the eye. Also the whole landing gear situation is kind of odd. For a ship that wants to give space truck vibes, it should have simpler, rugged landing gear.

To be fair, the ability to throw a ROC in the back does make it somewhat of a Titan upgrade, but I do agree with what you're getting at.

Perhaps! But quite expensive for a starter, and if a new player spends that much, maybe they would stretch a little further to something like a Freelancer or Cutlass

I really hope space Elon Musk makes some sort of exploration variant of the Nomad with an improved hydrogen fuel scoop & scanning that maybe also comes with a HoverQuad. I’d take that over a Freelancer DUR any day.

Yes, cig says it is a starter ship. But i have to disagree on that one. Its a real step up from the real starter ships also in price. Standalone the ship has already bumped up to 80dollars so 20 dollars short towards the cutlass black. Wich i would say is a better choice. Still the real starterships i would say are the aurora's and the mustang alpha above that.. the first step up is the avenger titan and the 100's and 300i and after that you come into the next level up on ships that includes the nomad. (i would not recommend the reliant at this given time, they all are 2nd place of everything if you know what i mean)
