I've seen a few of your videos! I was suggested to you bc I watched Creativity RV (Robyn). She had Nomad Internet for a while but it changed and she had issues trying to get in touch with their customer service. She did some research and didn't go into what she found but she's quit them and won't use them anymore.
So when a tree falls in the forest behind Jason (8:43), does it make a sound?

The stick falling in the background at 8:40 - HAHA!
As a Retired Network Engineer (Working in IT since 1987) my experience with Nomad was such that I told them their customer service would have to Reach Up just to Touch Bottom.
At 8:43 you’re lucky you weren’t further back in the woods. 😂

I feel the same way. It’s the same thing, “we got this thing for free, barely used it but it’s awesome”.
How many of those “influencers” did not bother to make clear they were compensated for their video of Nomad? I knew something was up when so many videos seemed to hit at once.

That got my Spidey-sense going as well. Three 'influencers' that I respect all started promoting Nomad at nearly the same time. I actually considered taking the bait but something seemed fishy. Glad I waited.
How did you get that tree limb to fall on cue at around 8:40-8:44? Another awesome video, thanks!

I boondock 95% of the time; using Harvest Host makes no sense to me. I can always find a 100% free spot to stay overnight. No hookups doesn't bother me since I'm and the RV itself is prepared for that scenario.

We took our grandchildren to Yogi Bear campground several times. It is an absolute great time for kids, BUT I just looked at their overnight camping fees - They have nearly doubled in the last 5 years. Just a bit high for my budget.
I can’t believe Nomad Internet over charging people for an internet that that doesn’t work. Hope it works out for this place like Harvest Host. Glad the North Rim is done. I was there over 20 years ago. I loved it there. Stayed at the lodge. Thank you Jason for this information!

Cool, I saw the Jellystone that we wintered at in your stock photos of Jellystone footage. Jellystones can have terrific rates in the winter times and often still have a lot of the amenities, like free laser tag once a week.
Great news updates, Jason. The Google maps updates are a real need, so I'm glad that they've started on that. I hope they do expand to trails outside of the national and state parks. It would be very helpful as more people also have begun to cycle long distance in these last few years on the new trails.
My last few electric bills have been over $650 per month here in Southern Calif. We hardly use much power, heater set to 60* in winter, evaporative coolers in summer. Were always turning off the lights to conserve. Were already in the upper tears so we pay more. I couldn't even imagine how much our power bill would be if we has electric vehicles. I will stick to my ICE vehicles....
@MsTiggytoo

With bills that high it would be intimidating for sure. Because evs are so expensive they’re not really money savers. However I have a 75kw battery and have alternating usage rates for electricity with the overnight rate being about 9c per kWh. So it costs about $7.50 or less to “Fill my tank” and drive about 350 miles. Of course when I’m traveling charging on the road is more expensive and could cost about $17 or more to fill up from almost empty. I notice an increase in my power bill but have no more weekly fill ups at the pump. Ironically my bill increased to what it was before my son moved out. Lol. But as I said, it will take a long time for these savings to make the extra cost of the ev a financial savings. But it sure is a pleasure to drive.
@harryhahne
Жыл бұрын
The increase in electricity bill was very small with an EV. It costs about $6.00 for a 300-mile charge. On road trips, the cost is greater for fast chargers, but still about half the local of gas covering the same distance in my ICE car. Once electric trucks have a 500 mile range, they should be an excellent way to travel while towing a trailer. So much quieter and easy to handle, i arrive less fatigued after a day of driving. My wife was not sure at tirst, but is now a total convert and doesn't want to drive our previously beloved Honda.
I wish the rv mattress discount didn't force a phone number be entered for text advertisements. But the prices are now pretty good for the quality.
Mccormicks Creek park is open now. However due to the damages from the tornado the campground will not open until at least October this year. For anyone who has had reservations they are refunding currently.

The Ram REV will get a gasoline range-extender later, so that would be the one to look for if RV towing was the primary use-case. Electric powered where you can, but fuel-powered when charging is inconvenient or even completely unavailable.
@ranig2848

If/when it gets a range extender it will either need to be huge or would not be able to supply enough power for mountain passes. I owned two Volt (range extended BEV) and both were horrible when the battery was exhausted when going through hills and mountain passes. They would just slow down and that was not towing anything. So they would either need to put a big engine (or at least a 4 cylinder with significant turbo) or it would just not work for towing. At the end of the day hybrids, unlike common sense, are worst of both world. You need to maintain two system, still do oil changes and other services to the engine and carry both an engine and a battery pack. In passenger cars these sales of hybrids and plug in hybrids are declining at 20% a year while sales of pure BEV are growing by 40-80% a year (depending on region). With 500 mile promised by both Ram and Tesla, together with fast charging (350kw or more), towing with a BEV truck will be a no brainer. You need to stop every several hours (most stop every 4-5 hours at most while towing) anyhow so you’ll just stop at a DC fast charger and would be ready to continue in 20-30 minutes. Most people don’t tow for more than 7 hours a day and the few who do would benefit from some rest.
@garycox7508

@@ranig2848 You make some good points, but the issue of mountain passes is easily solved with energy management where you tell the truck to conserve the battery unless it's needed for extra power. This is a solved issue... the first Chevy Volts had similar function over a decade ago. As for additional maintenance etc... yep, thats the price of admission if you want the equivalent range of a traditionally powered truck.. thats why it will be an option. And that 500 mile range being advertised is range while empty, not while towing a high profile RV. A good estimate is take the advertised range and divide by half for towing range. And the 350kw charging infrastructure has a loooong ways to go before it could be considered equivalent to fuel stations. Doubly so if you look at stations that are usable with a trailer hitched up. I'm all about that golden day where BEVs can be a drop in replacement for ICE, but we're not there yet.. esoecially for towing, and a range extension option is nice to have available for consumers as a bridge to that future golden time.
They approached me several times, but I just never got around to getting it instead I use star link
Can’t wait to see the Ram and CyberTruck with over 500 mile range. Those truck will be a game changer. Granted, they’ll initially be expensive (but than again most trucks are expensive these days), but much like initial electric cars 10 years ago, that cost over $100,000 and had less range than your average electric car today, in 5-10 years very few people would even consider a gas or diesel truck as electric trucks would be far superior for 99% of applications.

@@RVMiles I think the reason that Google doesn't add RV/Truck routing to their mapping is probably because of liability. For a free service, they would have to take on the risk of damage to people's vehicles and possibly for loss of life if they started routing. Garmin or RVLife have the same liability, but Google is a much larger target with deeper pockets and they would be the target of a lot more lawsuits.

It's usually in the parking lot of a business, or on farm land. Places like wineries where they have lots of land. You are supposed to patronize the business for at least $20. It's not a big money savings, but it's a fun way to have overnights that are booked, instead of staying in a walmart or an expensive campground. It is no hookups.
I’m a bit surprised that you (Jason) didn’t mention Boondockers Welcome while reporting on Harvest Hosts, since it is also owned/operated HH, and it’s always free to stay if you are boondocking. Properties are mostly non-commercial, so nothing to buy. Hosts are allowed to require/request/accept a small “donation” for plugging in, but many hosts (including us) do not accept such donations. If you stay with us, you stay as our guest.

Don’t need a generator. You just stop at a DC fast charger. There are plenty and number of chargers grows at 50% a year so by 2025 there would be more than enough. I’ve towed with a BEV and always had plenty of options to charge (also at campground which was awesome)

People said that about electric cars 10 years ago. In Norway more than 85% of new vehicles are full BEV. Same will happen in the US. As more people experience BEV and electric trucks, the more people will buy them. They’re already much much better than gas/diesel trucks for 80% of the population and within 5 years will be better for 99% of the population.
@ScubaSteveCanada
Жыл бұрын
@@ranig2848 Did you forget to mention that Norway incentivized the adoption of EVs at the expense to the ICE vehicles? That's why the percentage is so high there and so low in North America. The car dealers there don't add $5,00.00 to $10,000.00 more in Norway do they? Price parity has not happened nor close to happening here. Not even close to price parity. I own an Ioniq 5, in Canada - what a disaster it's been dealing with Hyundai Canada, to the point that I will never buy another vehicle from them. I also owned a 2020 Kona EV. Our charging infrastructure is still terrible with many blackholes in popular tourist areas. Wait 10-20 years for every aspect of EVs to mature. All the third-party sellers get their SIM cards shut down. It’s a crapshoot. At least TravelData gives you the modem though, and the cost is much lower. Nomad makes you pay a “membership” fee and you have to return the router to cancel. The only reason we’ve ever suggested TravelData is that you aren’t really out anything if things go south. Jay - I’m sorry but you’re very misinformed. I, and many of my friends, travel regularly with electric cars, long distances and very long road trips with no issues. As for pollution, an electric car pollutes less even if it’s powered by electricity provided by coal plant. However, coal production is decreasing rapidly while solar and wind is taking over because its significantly cheaper (not because its green). I’d recommend you do some research and not fall into all the FUD. That information you’re stating is simply incorrect. As for trucks, we’re seeing the very first iteration. In 5 years they’ll be much much better - just like how electric cars used to be super expensive (over $100,000) 10 years ago and are continuously getting more range at a lower price. Same will happen to trucks. Initially they’ll be expensive with less range than some people need, but within 5 years they’ll be able to do whatever a “regular” truck can do - and do it better since they’ll have better torque, payload and towing capacity. All new technologies are limited at first. The first iPhone and Android were pretty limited. Today, just 15 years after their introduction, there are VERY FEW people that do not have an iPhone or Android (and that was actually true in 2017, just 10 years after they were introduced).
@PavewayJDAM
Жыл бұрын
While not as adamant, lol, I agree, most Americans are not going to be switching to EVs, much less for payload or towing needs. Any legislation passed to nudge EVs into being a dominant vehicle market will only increase the value of older dino-fueled trucks and cars. You simply cannot force people to do something. Every time the government has tried it, the exact opposite has happened.

Hilarious. Sounds like if we were living in your world we would still be using a covered wagon for travel. EVs have come a long way and will become the replacement for combustion engines.
