Great couple of videos there. I switch to a Clark tank on my RM 250 (when running hare scrambles) with fuel tank foam to control the sloshing effect, I also used a heat gun to ever so slightly massage the tank for my Scotts steering stabilizer. Your bike looks sharp !

Dang! My ims tank arrived last week and then I find out about the Nomad the day after. I’m planning on doing the Washington BDR Labor Day weekend and it would be great to have that extra gas. Well, as it is I will have to do with the Moscow Moto 40l that arrived yesterday with the 2 extra 1 liter add ons. That should allow me to carry an extra 4 bottle or 1 gallon. Over 2000 mi Les oN the cry and loving it. Thanks for the informative videos.

Hi John, great set up, keep it as it is. I have recently bought the MST rally kit for my CRF 450L that I had planned long time before..... Mate, I have never seen such a terrible job. I will probably make a video about it, there is no single part that would fit. You have to drill, bend, cut, .... almost everything.....

When I saw the tank before you put it on, I thought it was going to be butt ugly. But installed & with the decals, it looks fine. I think the decals help a lot - makes it look like it came from the factory that way. If I buy the CRF450L, I will install all the same add-ons you chose. You should get a sales commission for all the products that people like me will buy because of your videos.

It does, but it leans back a bit. Standing up I don’t notice it. Sitting and riding hard I find I lean on it, like a brace. Still love the bag tho..

Installed mine for the Westen half of the TAT same thing dumped it a few times no damage. I went with the clear- ugly as sin but always knew how much fuel I had. Great for the 200 mile stretches between fuel stops.

On the IDBDR now. Same deal. Quite a few long stretches. I’ve found the Honda fuel meter to be extremely accurate.

Thanks for the review. It reminds me of a KLX250/351 I have with a 3.7 gallon Acerbis tank. (Actually it holds about 4.1). On the highway when I run out of gas I park it in gear, come to the front of the bike, crank the bars all the way over and lift up the front end in a wheelie and then rock it a bit up there. First "wheelie" gets me another 15KM, the 2nd wheelie another 4KM, the 3rd about 2KM and then about 1/2 a mile. My big concern on the Honda would be I used to push my KTM 690 till it ran out of gas and so often just doing that once killed the fuel pump.

Thank you for sharing the good informations. I must say that the nomad would be better with specific fuel pumps but it would cost much more. Anyway the bikes looks nice with the black tank even if I prefer the IMS (because it was looking more like the standard bike) 13:25 14:17 that's when you're happy not riding a Africa Twin :D (I used to ride a Super Tenere and now I ride a WR450 so I know lol)

Some like it, some don't, but it works great and I never worry about running out on a BDR trip.

John, thanks for this channel and all the content for this bike and answering all the questions you get! I had my first real world experience with my Nomad 20L and scuffed it pretty good on a rock. Knock on plastic...do you carry anything to patch yours in the event of a puncture? (special epoxy? radiator hose tape? etc - what works?). Also, I have the same setup as you using the short overflow tube and check valve. My tank leaked through the cap when I dropped it. I can tighten the cap fairly snug, but if I push it too far it pops off, ie. threads let go. Have you had the same experience or does this sound defective?

Hey John, well you've certainly transformed the way your CRF 450 looks... Pretty mean, actually, I'm impressed :) Now I noticed the Zeta Revolver in the long shots of the bike, but when you're going around the bike, at the end, it's gone. I think you should do a short video of that, for all the CRF owners that have trouble shifting... So are you still using the low comfort seat ??? If so, how is it treating your butt ? Btw, I just ordered a G2 throttle tamer from CRF's Only...doesn't seem to be available in Australia, and eBay is way dearer (: Cheers

Hi Geoff. The videos can sometimes be a compilation of shots a few weeks apart. As you noticed! I do have shots to make up a video, I just have not yet. It works great by the way. The Comfort Low is NOT as comfy as the regular, probably because it's thinner. It's still WAY more comfy than the stock seat.

Are you able to remove the fuel pump and extend the pickup tube? Push the 2 pickups way down into the bottom corners with finger strains on them. As well, to prevent dirt from getting into the fuel tank corners, a fuel sock in the neck of the tank might help.

A little. But it’s still a light bike for the road. What helps more is a steering stabilizer and balanced tires.

@@DansADV I've carried Fuel Friends 2L for a while now and rarely used them. Figured I'd move that weight to the front of the bike instead of hanging off the back of the bike.

Great follow up to part 1. Thought you answered all the questions, I always have unanswered questions (in my mind anyway). Q1, How much fuel is left/used when the low fuel light starts coming on? Q2, When you did the 1 gallon fuel trial, how much fuel was in the fuel pump reservoir rather than in the wings? It may give a misleading indication on how easy it is or at what point it is hard to get the fuel out of the wings. Q4, You mention that for the last 2 litres you need to be prepared for how you are going to get it in the pump reservoir, but also that you haven't ridden in the dirt with less than 2 gallons in it. In your experience, would the fuel from 2 gallons to 2 litres move from wings to pump without conscious intervention in on and off throttle dirt riding? Q5, Did the radiator guard bend at the lower mount point going to the frame hence the bigger washers and did it do anything to the radiator? The guard didn't look bent! Last Q6, Does the thermo fan come on more with the nomad radiator guards compared to the standard ones. Keep up the good work, and good to see the fall overs, I can relate to them all to well. As long as we keep getting up.🙂

That's a lot of questions I failed to answer! A1) About 2 gallons. At that point it is at the fuel pump. A2) The fuel pump reservoir holds 800ml. Anything more than that spills out into the wings. A4) I think it will move up into the res just fine. I talked to Mick from Nomad and he said the res has high enough "walls" to hold the fuel in place very well. A5) Yes, that's were it bent. The guards themselves are very well reinforced and mine bent at the weak point. It didn't look bent because I straightened it out. With a rock. Nope, ever touched the radiator. A6) I have a Vortex, therefore my fan does not kick on until about 212 degrees. It never got that hot, even in the desert with the Nomad tank, so no - the fan did not come on. Keep em coming!

Regarding A6, I have a vortex too, does it turn the fan on at a higher temp than the Honda ECU? I just thought it ran cooler. I noticed you have a thermometer on your radiator cap so you'd have more idea than me. I read you sold the ims tank so I'm guessing you are pretty happy with the nomad tank. You've just about convinced me to get one too, I've been using the rotopax on a rear rack with the standard titanium tank. Considered bigger tanks but been reluctant to give up the titanium, the lockable cap (Australian model), and the AXP radiator braces I've got, until now. Have you solved the fuel splash out the cap?

@@andrewhindle6116 Working Andrew. Always working. 2 Gallons in the tank and yes, the vortex turns on at a much higher temp. Not sure why. Yes, I am very happy with the tank and I can't really think of a down side to it. Again, don't like the added weight of 5 gallons of gas - fill it up with 3 and have those 3 sit lower on your bike.

I do Classic John’s all the time. Last time was with my 2021 Goldwing Tour DCT. Busted the turn signal in the mirror when the bike fell against my garage wall. Cost me $316 Sh%t. Could have been a lot worse.

I just bought a 2022 CRF450X for a Baja trip I have planned. The stock tank is just about useless for that type of ride so I'm going to change the tank to either the IMS or this one. I was curious how the fuel would transfer out of the lower wings of this tank and you answered it perfectly. My only reservation is the overall size being slightly bigger... heat build up in the fuel with the larger area around the motor, and the fact that you can't really get the fuel out of the bottom of the wings... I think I might be better served by getting the IMS 3 gal tank and adding a Giant Loop 1 gallon fuel bag. Yes it'd have to ride on the back of the bike (not the best spot) but after the first 40 miles, I could then transfer the gas in the fuel bag into the tank and continue the ride... your thoughts?

That was my plan B too. So far tho, no problems with over heating or running out of fuel with the Nomad.

That totally depends on your style. My style is long 100 plus mile days in the middle of nowhere, so the 5 gallon makes sense. I also don't do a ton of trail or tree riding, so the Nomad's extra width doesn't bother me. Quality wise the IMS looks better though both tanks are made from exactly the same material. I've also sent back 2 IMS tanks when the threaded brass inserts came loose. How's that for a non-answer answer?

The Holley Hydramat would help with fuel starvation and get all the fuel from the bottom of your tank.

That's a cool idea, but the fuel pump doesn't have a separate hose for pickup, so the mat would have to be incorporated into the pump. Also, no fuel return to keep it wetted. But I like where your head's at. Thanks!

Nice video thanks. You said the 3 gallon IMS tank doesn't hit your knees as much as this big one. So I assume the smaller one is more comfortable. Will you put the smaller one back on during periods of shorter riding when you don't need all that extra km range. Or is the big one on now for good?

I was thinking about a bigger tank for my WR250R, but I tried a friend's bike with a big tank and it felt quite uncomfortable for my long legs. I think I'll settle on the 3 gallon IMS tank and carry some extra fuel for those rare times I need more than 3 gallons. Cheers

You can’t blame Nomad for the fuel pick up issues as that was determined by Honda in their stupid tank design. It really needs an auxiliary pump in the low point and I don’t know if that has been done before, maybe in a tank for the Yam 660? I guess you have a reliable range of 17L which is a huge improvement over the IMS. I wouldn’t be happy with that constant cutting out as fuel pumps rely on the fuel for lubrication. With the Acerbis KTM tank you only have to lean the bike to the left and you can use nearly everything. Did you buy from a US retailer or direct from Nomad? Another useful real world report.

Hi John, I've been watching a number of your 450L videos. Been thinking of buying a 450L vs another 701 like I had last year. Based on your riding style why did you pick a 450 vs a 701 or 690?, which would have 3.5 gallons stock and an easy to add 1.5L solution from Rade Garage.

I wanted a Honda, number 1. I'd been eyeballing the KTMs etc but wished Honda would make the CRF450L. So when they did I kinda had to buy one. Other reasons were the weight was a little better and the suspension on the CRF, I thought, was better. When the 701LR came out I was seriously eyeing that bike, but I'd fallen in love with my Honda, so I didn't get one. We'll see what 2023 brings. Great question!

I am using a Seat Concepts xl comfort tall seat. My inseam is 36”. Do you think my knees will be in the curve of the tank and I will need to scoot uncomfortably back? Your comment about leg position got me wondering.

The bend for your knees is at the same place but instead of the plastic there it’s tank.

Of course! They are long gone and I'm on to a new set. But they were very pretty while they lasted.

John, I installed this tank on my ‘22 450RL and had it looked over by a dealership. The bike consistently loses power while i’m on the road and on the trail despite how much fuel is in the tank. The only thing that temporarily remedies it is opening and closing the gas cap. Have you had this issue at all?

No. Are you sure the gas cap vent isn't clogged? No air in means no gas out... Also, be sure the fuel line is fully seated.

John with the IMS tank you used to use did you experience any issues when you got low with fuel not pumping well? I'm just thinking if you experience issues when you get down to 5 litres on the Nomad is it really worth it as functional use is actually about 15 litres?

If you are discounting the gas in the very bottom of the Nomad, it's more like 1.5 liters... BUT. it's still in there, you just have to work to get at it, just like you would of those liters were on the back of your bike. As for issues with the last few liters in the IMS tank, no, I never had any issues. Great questions!

there's another way to use the rest of the gas john, just put pebbles on your gas tank for the gasoline to rise up, then your good to go.

I'll tell you what I think. I think the gravity forces were unstable at the 13.41 mark. It happens to me all the time.

Yep, there is a translucent one too. The black one looks way cooler though.

How tall are you John and what is your inseam. I have Range Anxiety so a larger tank is in my future but the width may send me to the IMS

Does your bike have a fan? Think the tank would accommodate a fan?

It does. The fan is the small stock one on the backside of the radiator. The tank doesn't interfere with it at all.

so... I'm no engineer, and all tanks have an "unusable volume of gas", but how hard would it be to either have designed, or retrofit a T sectioned line kit to feed the fuel from the lowest corner wings to be picked up and plumbed into the fuel pump. and a drain line from the seat back section to the lower wings. seems to me that'd leave unusable fuel to ounces, not a couple liters.

Bob, not impossible, but the Honda's fuel pump is an odd chunk on engineering. It would not be an easy fix.

That fuel tank is “astig” or “bad ass” in English. How I wish that’s available in the Philippines anyhow.

Nope. I was talking about the fuel pump o-ring. Oddly enough it has NOT done it since that video.

@@JohnTYoung Thanks. Did you mean to say it 'hasn't" done that since that video? I currently have a modified 2016 Suzuki DR650. I'm thinking of sticking with it, getting a CRF450L, a KTM 690 Enduro R, or a KTM 790 Adventure R. I'm all over the map! Can't decide! I also have a 2019 Triumph Tiger 1200 XCa.

Put the 790 on a 500cc diet and you’d have something. It fatten up your 450. 😎

Can't you just lean the bike over from side to side to get the fuel to flow over to the center reservoir?

Well that depends on what my throttle hand is up to Brandon. If I'm getting 45MPG then it's 225 miles. If I'm ripping around at 38MPG then it's 190. If I'm in the sand then it's 20.

@@JohnTYoung good to know. I bought a DRZ400 a long time ago with a 4.9 gallon tank and it got 55 mpg hitting 200 easily before reserve. Now no matter how I drive it gets 30 mpg. Sad part is I get 50 mpg with my street oriented 2008 suzuki dr650 just flogging it! I was looking for my next pure dirt bike with decent mpg. I want 200 miles a tank again with something with at least 50 hp.

@@JohnTYoung my drz400 has the upgraded carb and exhaust as well. hell my front forks are built so tough that you can't even push the handle bars down more than an inch or two. I weigh 260 lbs out of the shower and I was tired of flipping over the handle bars hitting the breaks hard...hahaha! but I am sure the honda CRF450RL is my next dirty girl I want to invest in! Thanks for the Videos!

Only one comment John you must be getting OLD, If two hotties ask if you're "ok" the answer is absolutely NO. I think the tank looks good not obese. I wonder if the fuel pick up can be changes to catch that last bit of fuel but then it is a reserve more or less. Also is it going to grow like most plastic tanks?

If you can run out of gas. with two liters left in the tank...it's a bad design. The pick-up should be lower in the tank.
