Nokia N-GAGE Buying Guide - Do You Remember this thing!?

Ойындар

The Nokia N-Gage was a failed cell phone / gaming handheld that crashed and burned with only 58 physical games released for it. However, there is a small but dedicated collecting community for it and The Immortal John Hancock happens to have a complete N-Gage collection. Plus he also shows us some of the handheld variations, different packaging, game highlights, preview and press editions and even a very rare N-Gage demo kiosk used at Gamestop!
Games Shown:
Ashen
Asphalt Urban GT
Civilization
Elder Scrolls Travels - Shadowkey
Pathway to Glory
Pocket Kingdom
Red Faction
Sega Rally Championship
Tony Hawk Pro Skater

This is a really interesting coincidence as we have recently started working on a N-Gage preservation project. We have a N-Gage capture device which we plan to use to record longplays with and then release on the internet in Public Domain. We are also working slowly towards obtaining every game in the library to preserve high-quality photos of the boxes, cartridges and manuals. Due to lack of emulators and even working ROMs of all games, the N-Gage is vanishing from the internet! We are hoping to preserve at least a small sliver of what the system was capable of.

Only a few of these are known to exist and it requires a physically modified N-Gage QD to output the video. I could link you to some of our content but unfortunately, it's all in Polish (still working on an English translation).

Trivia: N-Gage was actually very popular in my country, Indonesia. Even now, I've often seen one (secondhand) on sale. Yet I never knew this phone had physical game cartridge until years later, everyone just downloaded every games for free, haha. The Tony Hawk game for N-Gage was so good actually, hell most games in N-Gage were.

I got my n-gage qd back in 2005 and really liked it. I used it for almost a year as my mp3 player, completed two first metroids using nes and gameboy emulators. Thanks to multitasking I could surf the web and keep agile messenger running on the background. I even watched a movie on that thing using smart movie. Those were pretty big things 11 years ago. Then there were the games. Tony hawk, colin mcrae, system rush, sonic-n, rayman and ashen. All good games. By the way pathway to glory also had online multiplayer and that was pretty revolutionary at that time for a mobile game.

It ran the standard hardware and software of all Symbian 6 Nokia smartphones and those things were very powerful back in the day combined with N-Gage's button layout and exclusive games it was one of the best portable multimedia player and console on the market. If the QD version came first it would be success, but they really ruined the whole brand with that first N-Gage Taco phone.

Wow! It looks like the N-Gage kinda gotta a bad rap back in its day. Its looks much better than I thought it would. I think its another example of how brutal public opinion can be on the video game hardware market. It seems the GAP between the so-called "best hardware" and the "worst hardware" is never a wide as the master marketing wizards make us believe. Nice video, man. That was an eye-opener.

One of the saddest parts of the N-Gage timeline is that it doesn't have a dedicated emulator as of this writing. A lot of people knock the platform, but if they were able to see proper captured game footage and playthroughs, they'd probably think differently about a decent portion of its library. It had some awful titles, but it also had some really nice ones too. I once had a near-complete collection but parted with most of my items (I still have my original boxed QD and the dual-game changer). I kind of regret that now because it wasn't all that long ago and N-Gage stuff has seriously dried up. It's really hard to find the stuff now. I still have a major soft spot for this device. Shame Nokia botched the whole thing by releasing the "taco" model. If the QD came first and the price point was more competitive ($200-ish instead of $300), it would have gained some solid traction.

Both my first "game console" and my first phone. I got the first model for 100€ and I got to pick one game with it for free. I chose Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. I had never played any of them. I remember that it was 12+ game and I think I was 10 at the time. My mom made sure it was okay for me to play it and asked the shop assistant what made it a 12+ game. It was due to some blood. My mom thought for a moment and said I could get that game. Now that I think about it, that's the only time she really cared about age ratings. I loved playing Tony Hawk and I did all the missions and unlocked everything. There were some nice bugs too. I remember getting stuck multiple times inside a wall and being able to do unlimited tricks. Most of the time the skater would fall and break the combo when trying to get out but one time I succeeded and got a huge amount of points. I spent quite a while inside that wall before stopping since the stage wouldn't end before you hit the ground even when the time was at zero. Other physical games I have are Rayman 3 and Bomberman. Played through them 100% as well. I have those games in one of my computer table's drawers at my parents' house. My N-Gage is there as well but unfortunately it's not working anymore. I'm not sure what's wrong with it but it has trouble turning on and I'm pretty sure it's not the battery since I remember trying it out with one from another phone. I think I'll take them with me next time I'm visiting my parents and put them on display with my other gaming stuff. And no, I didn't mind the way you had to hold the phone when talking to someone.

The "talkimg sidewas" thing is more of a myth than anything else, the Ngage was my phone for a long time and I never had any problem holding it parallel to my hear like a regular phone. Also, it was an amazing media player, might sound ridiculous now but I watched whole movies on the thing. Not to mention that in terms of screen, specs and OS it was on par with the best phones of the time (the only thing missing was a camera) while only costing a fraction of the price. Definitely an underrated piece of technology that got a bad reputation and nowadays no one gives it the credit it deserves.

Well, it wasn't exactly state of the art when it came out. It was on par with earlier symbian 6 series 60v1 models (namely 7650 and 3650) minus the frankly novel, but realistically unusable vga camera, but by then sony ericsson had had their version of the symbian smartphone out for a year in the form of the p800 which had a faster processor, higher resolution resistive touch screen and was running on symbian 7 whereas the nokia smartphones were on the symbian 6 platform. 3660 and 6600 also came out around the same time the original taco n-gage did, and they had 16-bit displays whereas both n-gages had 12-bit, and the 6600 also made the jump to symbian 7 and s60v2 ui. The updated sony ericsson p900 with 16-bit screen and updated UIQ v2.1 ui also came out around the same time. By the time the QD was released nokia had also refreshed the communicator in the form of the 9500, and it had vastly more functionality than any of the series 60 symbians from nokia, had a faster processor, supported wifi and could render full html web pages. Very shortly after the QD came out came the 6630 that sported a twice as powerful processor than the earlier s60 phones, supported 3g networks (UMTS) and made the jump to symbian 8. Not a year later we started seeing 18-bit, higher resolution screens, multimegapixel cameras with even autofocus on select models and the upgrade to symbian 9 and the series 60 v3 ui... and so on and so forth. Still, n-gage was neat, i had four. Was quickly made outdated by the rapidly evolving smartphone market and as a handheld console it couldn't hold a candle against the original nintendo DS that came a year or so after. Yet i have fond memories of it. Things were moving fast back then. Now we just get one additional camera, a couple percent more screen to body ratio, a minor iterative performance uplift and a price hike every couple of years.

What the fuck? All these years I was under the false assumption that I owned every single Elder Scrolls game that was available. I've been playing The Elder Scrolls since Arena was released for the PC back in 1994. I didn't know that there was an Elder Scrolls game available for the N-GAGE. Is The Elder Scrolls Shadowkey any good? Is it worth going out, and buying an N-GAGE just to play it?

  • @tolemac2006

    @tolemac2006

Shadowkey, for a mobile Elder Scrolls installment, is a very competent game. It has the graphics of Daggerfall, a 3-D open world in which you have a limited freedom, and almost every other element from the main Elder Scrolls games. It has a decent main quest, plenty of side quests, surprisingly large dungeons and cities, and even a few but small guilds. It is worth it only if you can tolerate finger ache, neck pain, weird floaty controls and an unstable framerate. Your enjoyment of this game will really depend on how much of an Elder Scrolls fan you are. I, personally, am a big fan and really enjoyed it. The hardest part is to find a copy for a decent price. Hope that helped you make your mind.

It's Elderscrolls, but man it is really, really rough around the edges, you have to really have a strong dedication to that series lore to push through that game. From a technical and performance standpoint it's probably the worst game on the system. Frame rate is like 15 frames a second and gameplay is absolutely slow, it would take seconds for you to turn in that game. There is no draw distance, you can't only see what like 10 feet in front of you at best. Gameplay wise it's not fun, I give it a pass on lore alone

Thanks to you and John Hancock for doing a piece on the much-derided N-gage. You guys really showed that this device was ahead of its time and hampered by some questionable design decisions. I can think of the flip phone I had back when this came out and the N-Gage is lightyears ahead of them.

Awesome video! I got the N-Gage when it first launched and it was actually my first cell phone. I got Pandemonium with it and it was pretty amazing seeing PS1 style 3-D graphics on a handheld at the time. I later got Tony Hawk, Red Faction, and Ashen which I all enjoyed. Unfortunately the D-Pad on my N-Gage messed up so I couldn't play games on it any more. Then one of my friends thought it would be funny to put it in a microwave while I was away from it and it fried it. The N-Gage may be regarded as a bad system by most people but I really enjoyed it when I had it. Side-talking and all, lol! Now I wouldn't mind having a QD model.
