Noele Gordon on TVAM in 1983 - on Meg's Come back to Crossroads

Ойын-сауық

Noele Gordon on TVAM in 1983 - on Meg's Come back to Crossroads
with Ann Dimond and Nick Owen
one of my favourite lines for Miss Gordon Ann asks "Where you ever bitter"
She replies " I was never bitter dear"
Anne: "Can I call you Nolly" Noele "Ann you always used too in the old days"

I was Nolly's make-up artiste and hair stylist for many years for the show. She was a great friend and also Larry Grayson who called me "Slack Alice". I miss her so much she was a lovely person. But the sacking did affect her and I believe killed her, it was so cruel because she was Crossroads. Thanks for all the lovely memories Nolly.

Nolly was a true true old school actress and yes she was a diva she was in that old school category of soap starts being akin to Hollywood actors in the fame stakes but she wasn’t spiteful or nasty. Noel Gordon seems to be defined by those years on Crossroads yet she was one of a handful of people along with Ned Sherrin and Reg Watson (Neighbours) who set up the Midlands ATV franchise from 1956, broadcasting from the Alpha TV studios here in Birmingham, in Aston. Noel and the others set up this franchise from scratch and Noel was creating shows like "Lunchbox" and presenting them. My mom worked with Noel, Ned and Reg from 1956 up the point she switched to Crossroads and they were good friends. We had a few gifts around the house that Nolly gave to her over the years.

It was a disgrace that ATV did this to her as did Thames to Benny Hill. You'd never have seen Granada do this to Doris Speed or Julie Goodyear. From researching on Wikipedia; she was the only member of the cast who had a permanent contract of employment, she had no contract with Central who took over the show, making her arrangement with Lew Grade of ATV void, so ATV didn’t sack Gordon - Central did. I understand that Central were obliged to carry on the series; wanting to end it, so sacking Gordon was taken in the hope that viewers would ditch it. Wikipedia also pointed out that: Head of Programmes Charles Denton and Head Of Drama Margaret Matheson wanted to end the soap opera in favour of more expensive and lavish drama production WHAT WERE THE OTHER PRODUCTIONS?.

Yes indeed some sad people thought it was real. Noelle said in another interview that she used to get letters from people saying that they were thinking of running a motel/hotel/restaurant/cafe and could she give them some advice ? (She said by her own admission she knew nothing about the subject and why would she?) Yeah right, don't even think running a business it if you can't distinguish between fact and fiction . It's rather like "One Foot in The Grave, " when the Victor Meldrew character got killed of people actually sent flowers and sympathy to the BBC. The daftest one l heard though was from Christopher Timothy, the star of "All Creatures Great and Small" his agent on more than one occasion slammed the phone on people with the words "He's not a vet he's a bloody actor!" (Could Mr. Herriot come and see their sick dog?Did they expect him to turn up in an Austin 7 too? ) 🤦

Little known facts about Noddy: She told Larry once, to 'shut that door' after he left it a bit open, and that's how the catchphrase came about. She also said, after leaving C'Rds 'now... I'm free' again creating a new catchphrase. Then, to Bruce Fordyke she said, hey Brucie, 'come on down' and guess the cost of this ironing board (Bruce was upstairs using the loo at the time) - creating not just a catchphrase but also a game show. He left a floater, and she said to Brucie 'Didn't he do well' again a new catchphrase. She doesn't get the right credit for all these things, she should do.

The way the TV execs treated Nolly was disgusting. It's how they got rid of Benny Hill, hastening his death.

Adam Chance, David Hunter, Shughie McFee. God they came up with some absurd names. I wonder if any of them identified Crossroads on their cv's

I bet they did considering the fact 'Crossroads' was one of the most popular shows on ITV in its heyday.

What is absurd about David Hunter - i have a distant relative with that name. And Shughie is Scottish for Hugh

@@PaulKinnear David Hunter is a powerful name, Adam Chance sounds like a lounge lizard out to shag everything and Shughie McFee couldn't be more jock if you tried. .... Why not Norman Wince, Maurice Snettletwaite and Cedric Smallpiece? Far more credible!

Used to see her swan round the Grovesnor hotel in the 70s with her royal party…Sally Cotton etc. what a dreary lot of supercilious drama queens they all were. crossroads really was hammy to say the least. Nolly was wooden and only had 3 expressions. We used to sit and watch it with a crate of strong lager… it became funnier after 5 pints. Ridiculous story lines with all the panache of a provincial pantomime. It’s only real claim to fame was it inspired the wonderful Acorn Antiques.
