Noel Hill, Tony MacMahon - The Concertina, Come West Along the Road, The New Mown Meadow

Музыка

Noel Hill and Tony MacMahon play a selection of reels in December 1988 reminiscent of their album "I gCnoc na Graí (In Knocknagree)" recorded years earlier.
Reels: The Concertina Reel / Come West Along the Road / The New Mown Meadow.
Note: I don't hold the copyright on this; just sharing what I consider to be some of the best music not available elsewhere. If there is any problems I can take it down; just contact me...

I absolutely love this and come back to it when I need reminding of how good these two could be. And I love the 'hup!' that you hear them shout, when it is really rolling. Reminds me of people shouting out in the pub I learned in back in the 70s, packed with first generation Irish missing home. As it picked up you'd hear the shouted encouragements and then at the end ''Fair play to ye!" I miss it.

I know this is ten years since posting, and I know this is not going to sound especially impressive or exciting to some folks, but I just wanted to point out that thanks to Noel Hill, and to concertina music in general, I've been able to add a little bit of energy and spirit to my weekly D&D sessions. It's anachronistic fantasy gaming anyway, but the players at my table weren't getting excited over fiddles and flutes. Then I found the concertina, the maker of the music that we so often consider "sailor music" now. They don't have the historical background to know the full difference, but to a small (and growing) number of fantasy nerds, this is the music of high and joyful adventure. Thank you for posting it. :D

Most of my listening to Joe Burke would suggest that he is primarily a performer for a seated attentive audience. Tony has that special draíocht exemplified in bhis slow air playing but to me his greatest strength in in playing for set dancers, which for a large part of the listening public here in Clare was the primary object of the music. Listen to the crowd's initial reaction to the opening and closing 16 bars of any caledonian set when played for and danced as it should be. Mac's the Man
