That was great fun! I don't remember ever seeing Noel Coward dance before. Quite elegant. The contrast between their two voices reminds me of the contrast between Ethel Merman and Donald O'Connor in Call Me Madam. Mary and Ethel really had the pipes!

William Oser , to be honest, I think Noel sings beautifully (at 55 and while dancing) , it's Mary Martin's voice that I find irritating a bit. Especially when she sings louder than him. His voice is so smooth and in she comes with her wide "a" and "e"

@@mmjhcb , i've only seen your reply now (a year later) and i totally agree with you. Mary Martin was indeed a very talented artist with a beautiful voice (sadly it didnt alaways harmonise perfectly with Noel's - different types of voices all together). I'm not sure why i was so bitter about Mary when i wrote the last comment, probably i was just in an irritafed mood, and i was way to eager to defend Noel, whom i absolutely love, not necesarily for his singing, but for his entire creative work.

Regardless of public tastes and demand, I think one of the reasons these songs are not heard anywhere on TV is because of steep royalty costs. By 2021 most of the songs heard here should be in public domain, but thanks to Disney they are not. And watch them change the laws again when these songs get closer to 95 years old. Tick, tick, tick.

Coward saw her Broadway and wrote PACIFIC 1860 for her to reopen the Drury Lane after WW2 but it wasn’t a good fit for her and the show. She also had an issue with the costumes and found some of the lyrics risqué to perform. She almost couldn’t wait to leave and was unhappy to the point where she turned down the London production of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (Delores Gray did the role.) Coward and Martin eventually made up after he saw her do SOUTH PACIFIC in London. This TV special was one of three he did on NBC. Coward was fond of and loved Gertrude Lawrence but turned down the chance to play the King and direct THE KING AND I. It would not be unusual for him to have disagreements with leading ladies when often he would co-star with them, direct, write the book, lyrics and music. But he was dedicated to Lawrence and concerned that THE KING AND I was affecting her health. The show was difficult to do and camouflaged the liver cancer which killed her.
