Noctua is Back: NH-D15 Gen2 & 8 Years of Fan Development

Noctua brought a host of prototype fans to show where it's been for the last 8 years -- and the answer is designing & developing fans. We have a separate interview with one of Noctua's technical staff members coming up after the show, but for now, we can cover the product-level basics of the Noctua NH-D15 Gen2, the unnamed prototype fan, some Threadripper coolers, and Noctua's timing and plans.

I distinctly remember in LTT's screwdriver video, Linus mentioned a conversation he had with someone high up at Noctua and said something along the lines of "you must have the best engineers, right?" They basically told him no. They have good engineers, but they give them the time and resources they need to do their best work. So much of R&D is half-baked due to arbitrary deadlines and heavy budget constraints, so I'm looking forward to their new products. They have no interest in releasing products that aren't ready for primetime and it's a refreshing attitude compared to the usual rat race.

I bought a Noctua NH-D14 from Newegg on June 12, 2012 - and I'm still using it, now on an AMD 5900X. The great thing about Noctua is they keep selling adapter plates. So originally I got this for an Intel 3930k, then later I had a Intel 7700k, then an 8700k, then a 9700k, then an AMD 3900x and now the 5900x. You can only have 1 brand in it at one time because of the branding on the outside. Most places have a cooler next to the register already where you can choice whatever brand you want. I get that they are trying something new and unique but this will only create more work for the people behind the register.

Cleaned my setup couple times and it works just as silent and cools just as good as it used to the day i bought it. My only problem with the product was during installation, radiator had alot of really sharp edges where you can easily cut your hands and installing it in my Define R5 case (which isn't a small case either) was quite a challenge even with a second person helping me - i cut my hands abit trying to install fans on radiator but after i managed to install, had no problems through the years.
