This is a frightening combination of Damian Lillard with the ball, and Giannis Antetokounmpo setting the high screen. As Dame goes through, you gotta stop the drive or the pull up. Which opens up this bounce pass, and Giannis on a roll like this is a death penalty for the opponents.
If you don’t wanna give him that, and you try to defend the pick and roll straight up, it’s either going to be a three point bomb like this, or another scenario would be the guard trailing behind Dame and in this 2 on 1 we got the lob, and another dunk by the greek freak.
Let me show you how the Bucks will look with Lillard and why the NBA is in trouble.
Last season Damian led the NBA in generating 12.5 points per game as the pick and roll ball handler. So points that came from his shots or assists in that action.
And this was with guys like Jusuf Nurkic or Drew Eubanks as his partners. No disrespect to them, but they are light years away from Giannis.
Speaking of him, Antetokounmpo will love the attention that Dame will draw from the opposing defense.
The Greek Freak led the NBA last season in total points in the paint, and with Lillard opening up even more space for him to operate inside, Giannis will become virtually unstoppable.
On this possession, watch how far the help comes from. Put Lillard up top and nobody is moving from the three point line. So Giannis can do his thing.
Or this type of zone defense. There is 0% chance you leave a wide open shot from downtown to a sniper like Dame. This defense would be unusable against Milwaukee next season.
Ok we know he’s a deadly shooter but you need to see 1 underrated aspect of Lillard’s game.
For a guy that needs the ball, he’s terrific at moving without it and will make the offense much more dynamic.
Dame’s great at recognizing when the defense is overplaying him and he just cuts to the basket for an easy one.
Right here we got the screen for him to curl into a handoff by Nurkic. And the defense is anticipating that, so the defender is fully behind him ready to chase him down.
But Damian just notices how the inside is completely empty so instead he cuts, gets the pass and lays it in.
This is a similar play only this time he is the screener. Again, sees the lane, cuts and finishes.
The combination of the defense being afraid of his three point shooting, combined with the lightning quick acceleration that Dame has, opens up a ton of easy layups for him as you can see in these highlights.
But he’s also not lazy to work for his shot and around the court coming off of screens in order to get open for a shot.
Right here we got him down low setting a pick for Grant before sprinting back out to get one himself, and this is a wide open look which of course he knocks it down.
Again, this works not only for Lillard, but for Giannis as well, since the focus will be on Dame running around, and Antetokounmpo can have single coverage on him. As we’ve seen time and time again- nobody can stop Giannis 1 on 1.
And that’s especially the case in transition. If Antetokounmpo gets a head of steam, he comes at you like a hurricane.
The Greek freak is the undisputed leader in transition points for each of the last 5 seasons. With that, the Bucks have been top 3 in 5 of the last 6 seasons. It was only last year that they dipped slightly to the 9th spot. But with Lillard spraying out to the three point line, it’s either going to be a knockdown shot by him, or a clear lane for Giannis to take off. So I fully expect Milwaukee to not only get back to the top 3, but be the best transition team in the league this season.
But all that aside. We know that the most obvious downgrade of this trade is not on offense but on the other end.
Defensively Lillard has always been below average, and the tracking data from Bball Index confirms that. A lot of D’s and F’s here.
It looks even worse when compared head to head to the guy that Milwaukee just lost in Jrue Holiday. But anyone that watches the Bucks already knows that. And they also know that they play team defense. It wasn’t only Jrue, but also guys like Bobby Portis, Giannis and especially Brook Lopez play a vital role defensively. I even made an entire video about Brook last season. And he finished second in the defensive player of the year voting. That’s how great of a defender he is.
What I’m trying to say is that the upside that the Bucks get from Dame on offense in terms of playmaking and shotmaking, definitely makes up for what he gives up defensively.
Plus this is a perfect match stylistically and the 2 guys seem to like to play with each other.
This is what Dame said in a GQ sports video last year.
At the same time, out of all the superstars at the All Star game last season, Antetokounmpo picked Lillard with his very first pick in the draft.
And for all this time, we haven’t even mentioned Khris Middleton. This gives a lot of breathing room for him as well.

An under the radar part of this is bumping middleton from the 2nd option offensivley to the 3rd option. Hope they all stay healthy. You have the best paint scorer in the nba in giannis, an elite mid range guy in middleton, and an unlimited range (2nd only to steph) guy in dame. Good luck defenses

Between the PnR with Dame-Giannis, Dame-Brook, Middleton-Giannis, there's also the Spain PnR that can utilize Dame/Khris as the ball handler, Giannis/Brook as screeners, and Khris/Dame as shooters who set the back screens and pop out on the perimeter. This is gonna be nuts.

I would argue that Giannis+ Dame is scarrier, cause KD and Steph are both shooters. Its much harder for a defence to protect the perimetre and the paint at the same time.

Durant shooting from literally anywhere, Curry's shooting but most importantly his crazy offball movement. 2 mvos in their prime on the same team, that was the best duo since Kobe and shaq. Lillard doesn't have quite the offball movement as steph plus giannis is useless outside the paint. Still a great duo tho

Durant is great and all, but he only averaged 26ppg in GSW, Steph averaged 26ppg in those 3 seasons too. Giannis averaged 31ppg last season. Dame averaged 32, which is 2 more points than Steph did the season before KD showed up.

This year has so much different aspects and things going on is crazy. You have potentially a modern-day Kobe Shaq pick-and-roll with Dame and Giannis antetokounmpo. You have Damian Lillard and CP3 fighting for one championship pairing up with superstars to get it done which should bring some interesting classic games. You have LeBron and Steph both fighting for another championship trying to beat the comparisons of both MJ's: Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. You have the biggest Prospect since LeBron Victor wembanyama fighting to prove his potential is not all hype all while proving that he is not going to be a injury-prone player and fighting against Scoot Henderson for Rookie of the Year in my belief. Speaking of Scoot Henderson you have him potentially fighting against his own state for being the reason that loyal Dame Lillard is no longer there. And speaking of proving themselves, you have a Zion Williamson coming back looking better than ever trying to prove himself not to be injury-prone no more and to remind everybody why he was a number one pick. And speaking of injury we have Chet who's trying to prove himself... There are going to be so many classic games that will go down in history this year

Bucks Offensively have the trifecta, Close range in Giannis, Midrange in Middleton, Long range in Lillard. Then you add guys who can do others things on offense, Brook, Beasley, Portis. I expect them to gel really well. The only question is how they'll maintain on Defense, they have all the rim protection you could ask for, but they don't have too many perimeter defenders.

If Crowder is any good this year and Middleton can keep up at all, they will be more than solid... but to me... it all comes down to Marjon Beauchamp and the 2 rookies they drafted this year... from reports and Summer League, they are supposed to be lockdown defenders... if they can shoot as well, they will get minutes...

Don't even have to look that far back. We saw that this year with the Cavs and the post westbrook trade Lakers. Darius Garland/Mitchell and Dlo/Reaves are terrible defensive backcourts but those defenses were top 10 simply because of the frontcourt. Jrue was important but the Bucks will still be a top 10 defense with Giannis, Brook and Portis

Kris Middleton about to turn into Klay Thompson and not because he’s going to improve but because he’s not going to be guarded as much. People give Klay way too much credit.
I agree Dame has great defenders around him but what they lost defensively in Jrue still can't be underestimated. It's possible the Bucks are still good enough defensively even with Dame instead of Jrue but I actually think the Celtics should be favorites out of the East. Yes I know trading Time Lord just lost them rim protection but also what a huge upgrade they made from Marcus Smart to Jrue Holiday.

KD aint stopping Giannis, Booker aint stopping Lillard and Beal sure as hell aint stopping Middleton. On the other hand Giannis at least has a better chance than anyone in the league of stopping KD and Middleton has an even better chance of stopping Beal. Plus, good luck to Nurkic trying to stop either Giannis or Brook at the rim, whereas both Giannis and Brook can easily stop Nurkic (and have many times in the past). Nah, the real fun matchups for Milwakee are Nuggets and Lakers, not the Suns. Although it would be hilarious to watch the Suns loose again to the Bucks only this time they helped them get Dame.

Thing that makes Milwaukee a threat is that they have consistently been around top of not at the top of their conference for many years so you can only imagine what bringing in another superstar will do. No other team has 2 players who score over 30ppg on great efficiency

Yea, Dames offensive IQ is higher than Jrues, which is more valuable for the Bucks than Jrues defensive IQ was.

Yup it's wraps, especially if other guys step up their defense to cover for Lillard. Scary...
Giannis- force in the paint, paired with Dame's unparalleled range. Add Middleton to the equation, whose mid-range is elite. Right now I can't think of a team that can stop them defensively. It's over.
1 thing that is not mentioned enough, the Bucks had a huge problem with handling the ball in crunch time, Dame is as clutch as you can get in those situations and doesn't shy away from the ball. No more Hack'a'Giannis 😅
It's not only the pick and roll. You have a team with one excellent 3 point shooter an excellent mid range shooter and the best in the paint and also 3 very clever players with and without the ball so the possibilities are endless. Very difficult to defend this trio (and i did not mention Lopez at all)

Dame pick and roll with Giannis will of course be deadly, but so will Dame iso with Giannis playing off ball. Dame can't be guarded one on one, and if you give him the ball and let him cook, the defense will shift around and Giannis will fill any cutting lanes that open up as a result. Giannis is insane at being patient and looking for cutting lanes. It's strange to say a superstar is amazing at cutting and finding easy buckets that way, but Giannis is underrated when it comes to that

Its still going to come down to coaching. If Bud weren't dumb and had put Giannis on Butler defensively, it might have been a different series. Between Jrue, Giannis and Lopez Bucks had incredible defensive potential that Bud didn't use! Griffin will have to be better by default. But will he be good enough? I think so.
Lol I didn't know they have publicly said they want to play with each other as the number one option. What if Dame demanded a trade to the heat just to lower his trade price to other teams and not completely gut wherever he actually goes to.

If Adrian does his homework and Giannis, Dame, Brook stay healthy, we have ourselves a ring...No one can stop this. We can even afford not having Kris 100%. Jae, Beasly, Bobby are great alternatives for Milwaukee. But with Kris is good shape as well...oh boy.... I also expect LESS injuries as Giannis is not gonna face a wall anymore, and neither Dame is gonna have double teams so often...
As much as I love this duo, I don't think it would be feasible to do the pick&roll all game long. Or even for the entire season + playoffs + finals. Teams will eventually defend it. They should have more tricks in their bags to get to the end and get it done.

I hope Giannis and Dame put in heavy work together. Dame needs to learn how to properly play in a winning team system and focus on decent defense. Giannis needs to work on his game in the clutch and shooting at basically all levels. They really could benefit heavily from each other
