I've known about rain trousers, rain coats, and ponchos for a while, but cycling in the rain became much easier for me recently when a friend recommended that I wear a baseball cap (which I normally _never_ wear) to keep the rain off of my face. Finally a good use for that "JUST CARS" cap I have. 😉

I loved the people riding with umbrellas. I feel like that would cause me to have an accident or the wind would catch it and flip it inside out, but if it works then it’s a great idea.

The hoodie of a rain coat might be a little bit too bigger. So that, when you pull the strings it comes in front of your eyes. A baseball cap prevents that.

When cycling in the Netherlands. I heard the saying "You are not made of sugar!" every time I wanted to wait for 30 minutes to see if it would clear up. And it's true, you get a bit wet, you get shit done, and you dry up while having a coffee or beer somewhere. And most often the rain stops eventually before you go home.

to me, even more impressive than them cycling in the rain, is how fast they can pass an intersection with other bicycles. even people riding in opposite directions, they can very easily predict each others movement and merge or intersect without colliding. it makes a mockery out of cars that need traffic lights and stop signs to avoid collisions. the shot with 10 bicycles all starting to move at the same time seems so simple, yet if they were cars, they would have taken so much longer because they would have to line up one behind the other.

last year I commuted daily for a month in Lamphun (25km). While I really enjoyed my commute it was a pity that there is no dedicated infrastructure like in Netherlands. It can feel pretty dangerous to cycle next to busy roads or to cross intersections 😉. I daily passed a high-school in Lamphun city. It was absolutely crowded with private cars, mini busses, motorcycles etc.. to pick the kids up. I imagined all kids cycling, which is possible and easily doable in a small city like Lamphun. Unfortunately most Thai people seem to believe it is too warm or too far to cycle. It's definately not too warm 😊. Do you yourself cycle in Thailand?

But I do it to avoid the first scenario. Although in heavy rain that won't keep all rain out and all the water still runs in your shoes. I don't mind getting wet on the way home. I just change clothes or even take a shower to warm up a bit. So I do take the car sometimes when it rains and join the traffic jam.

Often rain that sounds hard in a car is so light that on a bike I don't even put on all the raingear (only rainjacket with hood) and I only feel the need to put on rain trousers and shoe covers on only about half of the times it rains.

unfortunately that's how humans (often) act. they hear "we are gonna rework this road and take a little space of the road surface and make it into a cycling lane" and the part that they get angry about is that the government is gonna take something away. and humans hate change, especially when something will change to a system they are not familiar with. so if Americans would be able to get accustomed with cycling infrastructure, so they get to experience the pros and cons. and have a change to find out cycling infrastructure isn't as bad as they think. they would be less "scared" when the city wants to implement some. we have a "verkeerspark" in The Netherlands where parents can take their children and have them learn about traffic rules. the children are able to "drive" on little roads in little "peddle cars" (don't know how you call them in English) they are like those cars you give to a small child. and instead of wording it as taking away some car infrastructure they need to start wording it as giving people cycling infrastructure so they have more options to choose from. people love to get something. ps. if anyone wants to know more about the park for children it's known as "Verkeerspark Assen", just search on Google (for pictures) and you're able to get an good impression of the park. for children it's a fun way to learn how the roads work.

I take off my glasses, or wear a cap that extends about 7-10cm of a hoodie that I can pull low over my head sometimes both to keep the cap from blowing off, especially with snow or hail. Especially with high winds this becomes a must. Hail in the eyes at 8 bft really stings! Good lightweight and breathable rain gear is important. When done correctly you can arrive completely dry, if a little late because you need to suit up and take it off and hang it to dry somewhere. But now I'm older and having a car made me into a good weather cyclist, but I've done all weather cycling for the better part of 4 decades.

Unless you're a Dutch teenager, rainpants at least in the morning are a very good thing! Sitting around in wet trousers for half a day before they dry is so uncomfortable, but my nephews told me it was considered seriously uncool to wear them when biking to high school - they'd wear their rain jackets over their usual jackets, but not the rain pants over their jeans. At least if it rained on the way home they could put on dry clothes after arrival. Another good option is a long raincoat, that will keep your skirts or upper trouserlegs dry. It doesn't protect your lower calves or ankles, but does reach below the knees. Mom always used one since she almost always wore skirts, but I've taken to using one too since it's much less hassle to put on and take off than the rain pants, just one extra zip for the lower half.

An important thing about Dutch commuter cycling is that the ride "upright" bikes which make for more relaxed riding, unlike the road and hybrid bikes more popular in the UK which involve a more aggressive, forward leaning position which makes them less likely to use their bells and stop for pedestrians and at intersections. It also reduces their vision. In fairness to them many cyclists ride long distances and are probably better served by these "road/hybrid" bikes. More of these bikes are needed in the UK.

In Denmark, they made a study 20 years ago about the possibility of getting (soaking) wet if you use the bicycle to commute north of Copenhagen the year round for half an hour every morning and afternoon. In only 3,5 % of the tours you will be soaked. The study has been repeated with only minor changes in the results. I suppose the weather in Denmark and the Netherlands are very much alike, so probably on 3 to 4 % of your commuter tours, you will get wet. I used to cycle every day all the year round in Denmark, including in snow, ice, storm, and so on. The weather only a few times stopped me from going, like if the snow was too deep (>10 cm) on the roads and cycle paths. Still, if someone had asked me how often I got wet when commuting, I would have said 5 to 10 %. You remember when you got absolutely soaked, cold, and miserable 😢. That intersection is crazy busy with bikes every morning. It’s actually not as busy as usual on this video. (At least not as busy as it usually is at around 9 in the morning when I cross there.)

That person who put their raincoat in front of the handlebars - I love that idea. Upper legs in particular get wet the most.

Cycling through the rain feels good actually, the hot shower or bath feels even better afterwards :)

yeah we dutch like to say that if it doesn't kill you its fine whenever there is rain or some other type of horrible weather outside, i myself have cycled a lot without anything to cover my head or face along with regular jeans, because why does it matter, by the time you are home you can just put on other clothes, or if you are arriving at work, it will simply dry up

It's normal in the Netherlands. Some have 3 kids and a couple of grocery bags with them.

It actually makes for more comfortable cycling, as the child in front of you absorbs most of the rain for you. 😂

Add groceries in side bags on the back, flowers in a bag on the handle bars, and an older child cycling on your right on their little bike, and that would be me about 20 years ago.... A walk down memory lane 😊

Not quite the same now that it's icy. Yesterday the remaining snow turned to ice but overnight it seems the salt wagons have been out - bless their hearts! People still out today, more so the younger ones & moving just a little more slowly...

I am always surprised how reluctant young Dutch cyclists are to wear proper rain clothing. I don’t mind rain, but hate to get soaked, especially when arriving at work. I always hope they get over this reluctance before switching to a car.

I don't like rain clothing because it make you sweat, so you get wet anyway, easier to not wear rain gear. Better to have dry clothes with you or @ work/school.

I agree with@@jilskehupkes7729 Without rain trousers only the front of your legs get wet, with rain trousers your whole bottom half gets wet from sweating (on the 11km trips to school). Same for the jacket, so often it is nicer to wear a good normal jacket that breaths and can handle a lot of water before soaking and just deal with the itchy wet jeans but still having a dry bum ;).

As a teenager though, I was jealous of the people with raincovers, that just cover the front of your leg. I think they are the best middle ground. They are easy to put on and the back part of your legs can still breath. But I think they were not cool enough back then 😄 I would totally wear them these days though.

Around the age of 10 i went with my cousin to theme park Slagharen i believe, we stayed 3/5 days with another cousins in 1 hut. 1 of that day it stared to rain more and more the Worker asked the crowd if they mind going in a ride while raining in a fun manner way we all said " yes!! " And almost for 1 hour it was raining nobody cared if they where wet as there was already water ride that made us so who cares if we get wet by the rain in a Spinning ride or boat ride on land it was quit fun seeing everyone like that.
