Noam Chomsky: “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history”

Noam Chomsky joins George Eaton to discuss the Russia Ukraine war, Climate change and Brexit.
It was as a ten-year-old that Noam Chomsky first confronted the perils of foreign aggression.
“The first article that I wrote for the elementary school newspaper was on the fall of Barcelona [in 1939],” Chomsky recalled when we spoke recently via video call. It charted the advance of the “grim cloud of fascism” across the world.
“I haven’t changed my opinion since, it’s just gotten worse,” he sardonically remarked. Due to the climate crisis and the threat of nuclear war, Chomsky told me, “we’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history… We are now facing the prospect of destruction of organised human life on Earth.”

Noam Chomsky is a realist and he said nuclear war has almost occurred via mistake. He is speaking a realistic narrative which includes a danger point. However, he was not asked about faith! I would expect if so he would have more to say!

Makes me think of TS Eliot's East Coker. Conventional wisdom is no help in the face of these challenges. Long hoped for calm, the autumnal serenity And the wisdom of age? Had they deceived us Or deceived themselves, the quiet-voiced elders, Bequeathing us merely a receipt for deceit? The serenity only a deliberate hebetude, The wisdom only the knowledge of dead secrets Useless in the darkness into which they peered Or from which they turned their eyes. There is, it seems to us, At best, only a limited value In the knowledge derived from experience. The knowledge imposes a pattern, and falsifies, For the pattern is new in every moment And every moment is a new and shocking Valuation of all we have been. We are only undeceived Of that which, deceiving, could no longer harm. In the middle, not only in the middle of the way But all the way, in a dark wood, in a bramble, On the edge of a grimpen, where is no secure foothold, And menaced by monsters, fancy lights, Risking enchantment. Do not let me hear Of the wisdom of old men, but rather of their folly, Their fear of fear and frenzy, their fear of possession, Of belonging to another, or to others, or to God. The only wisdom we can hope to acquire Is the wisdom of humility: humility is endless. The houses are all gone under the sea. The dancers are all gone under the hill.

Greta shouldn't go around worrying old men. It's unkind! Perhaps the full interview also covers nuclear war. The problem we have is that we have tended to forget about it. Today's think tanks and policy advisers, who seem to control foreign policy nowadays, are reckless and unbalanced. In pursuit of some unrealistic optimising goal, such as making the Iranians less Iranian or the Russians less Russian, they risk nuclear war. This may not kill everyone on Earth, but could easily wreck high tech civilisation. Without the tech we may not be able to adapt fast enough to the ecological problems already underway on the planet . So the two human mistakes together could be a lethal double whammy.

Disappointed with Chomsky. I admired this man for many years and even spoke of him to others with great respect and read all his content - books, articles etc and even followed his commentaries on various appearances. Unfortunately, perhaps age has muddled his terrain, he is completely off the mark in regards the events in Ukraine and the circumstances surrounding Russia's invasion. Within the very first days he calls for accountability for Russian war crimes and that Putin himself is responsible for these crimes if ever they actually happened. A man of Chomsky's stature ought to know, and I'm sure he knows, that innocent until proven guilty is a cardinal feature of any criminal justice system claiming repute, especially international criminal law. A single murder takes months to solve and here we have Chomsky - the greatest intellectual of our time - blasting the airwaves within minutes stating Russia and Putin himself are guilty. It now makes me wonder what was all this self-righteousness about from Chomsky. In regards the invasion itself: was it legal or illegal is highly questionable, I agree. But make no mistake it is not the UN alone (a US-driven and controlled institution, clearly noticeable from the recent ousting of Russia from the talk shop that is the UN Human Rights Council and an institution founded post WW2 and where its laws were abused with a high degree of propensity by the West) that makes laws. Laws regarding the legality of war have existed and still have relevance and can be and are applied since time immemorial. A great piece of article in two parts about this was recently delivered by Scott Ritter: consortiumnews.com/2022/03/29/russia-ukraine-the-law-of-war-crime-of-aggression/ Chomsky has shown his true colours and sorry to say he's centuries off from being the "greatest intellect of out time".
