The education system is one of four levers used by the US government (mainly plutocrats both Republican and Democrat) to control society from youth to retirement. Far from promoting empathy, the goal is to create tools to grow the economy. When education is free, you end up in the long run with a population that is independent and free. When you use education (as primarily a loan industry - $1.3 trillion as of 2017 second only to the mortgage industry), you create a tool that is indebted from the moment he or she graduates. (The other three levers are the housing market (the mortgage), healthcare (to be covered, you must work) and finally the military. The Chinese communist party can't compete with the US govt's social engineering.) As Chomsky points out, it wasn't always like this. What was once the genuine foundation of liberty (public education, a roof over your head, your health, your security) are now just (trillion dollar) markets.

" For if leisure and security were enjoyed by all alike, the great mass of human beings who are normally stupefied by poverty would become literate and would learn to think for themselves; when they had done this they would sooner or later realize that the privileged minority had no function, and they would sweep it away. In the long run, a hierarchical society was only possible on a basis of poverty and ignorance…" - George Orwell "1984"

This is just the kind of true message that I heard which has changed my life. When I heard a guest on an old Joe Rogan Show podcast episode mention John Taylor Gatto I decided to look him up. What I learned about how our system in America is set up based on a Prussian oppression military style of schooling to suppress creative free thinking in education... Gatto's message was like a key opening up locks that had been placed in my mind. I decided to share this message of the possibilities in self education online in a club. Since then my life has been elevated to a new level of understanding and hope because I found a woman who lives in Norway who really relates to my life and message. She was a teacher and in Norway they have a much more creative and individualized method of realizing how individual each student is and trying to let that unique creativity blossom. Thank you John Taylor Gatto and Noam Chomsky for being so courageous and kind hearted to help people see how much amazing possibility we all have if we are allowed to follow what motivates in the true heart of our soul and infinite mind...

Yes, I studied in UNAM, in Mexico City, and it's almost free. UNAM is one of the two public universities, the other one is The University of Guadalajara, that is recognized in the USA. I was surprised when I transfered some of my credits at University of Texas, at El Paso, and was asked to give a lecture on electrolytes . The students ignored the basics of chemistry, and I have to explain to them Mendeleiev's discovery about the periodicity of the chemical elements. The professor told me that they are not taught science in High School. I couldn't believe it, for me, the USA was the science country

Yeah America sucks, I stayed in school to study history and now I am semi literate and I see what's going on and I can't unsee it or do much about it, but I care. Here is a perfect example of America, they may teach you some nutrition facts, but encourage you to buy as many cokes as you want and if you get diabetes no big deal, but if you're not on time for third period class then you get detention, literally detained as a child for breaking their rules. Baby jail, it's the system grooming you to take orders not to truly educate and better you as a person.

Time, again to pick up my Yoke. And move on toward life with little or no hope. Professor Chomsky it's hard out there. It's a hard row to hoe. How to live without permission might be something you could Reserch... after all, nothing will change much if a person doesn't know how to drop the futile to reptile ways... Yes, you are brilliant. Yes, you are my hero's hero. I have to tell you. I live under the threat of having no money. I couldn't care less. It is the feeling behind the money that says..."you are a good person.". I have failed at understanding how I can rid my-self of that notion. I feel I am of no value. This is not a cry for help. It is a want for appreciation. Why don't we appreciate people who serve time and Love at all expense. With the exception of wanting to say, at that last breath, I did my best. I did not cheat the gift of life.

Howdy. Noam Chomsky is a phenomenal describer of the that. Less is said about the why and for what purpose. What is the purpose of the attack on Public Education ? Chomsky gives a half way answer. To tone down solidarity and to tone up egocentricity. For what purpose toning down solidarity and up egocentricity ? Is it an effort to counter possible future social unrest ? Regards.

They say that it's easy for anyone to get rich nowadays on the US. If capitalism on US was something more like Canada it would be awesome. The portrait of the appalling state of the US educational and social security systems seem realistic enough, but where he fails is at analyzing the mechanism: he blames an "effort" (presumably by some politicians) to drive certain ideas out of people heads, to change them into "crazed maniacs" etc. But why is this "effort", from a powerful minority, to subjugate the masses, succesful in America alone, among all Western democracies? Is there some conducive cultural terrain ? Is America less a democracy than any European one? In what way? etc.... And is it true that America was the "first country to have a real broad mass education system?" What period of history is he refering to and what Western democracy is clearly second to the US in that respect?
