No worries, I'll use the bow thrusters...

How NOT to navigate a lock on the Canal du Midi. Famous last words... "No need for the fender - I'll use the bow thrusters to compensate..." Yeah - right!

Well I'll blame him, Ed. Anyone can wind up bumping the sides of a tight canal like that, sure. But what you DONT do is come in so hot. This guy came racing in at high speed, with predictable results. Very not smart.

I remember coming down the Grand Union canal in my first canal boat. A 29ft fibreglass cabin cruiser. I came along the canal to a big wide part which was about five canal widths wide. It went wide to my right and in the opposite right hand corner was a lock. I tried about five times to steer right into the open lock slowly but there was no hedge on the right bank and there was a strong wind blowing from the right. Everytime i slowed to steer into the lock the wind blew the bow left away from the lock. In the end it was a bit of a kamikaze run at the lock. My entry was similar to yours. 'Almost', but not quite, but close enough!

Correct, slow down and let mother Nature do her work, it'll surprise you. BTW: At speeds like that, bowthrusters are useless

You need way on the vessel , if you need the rudder to answer . Personally I would have fenders out each side and I would have warped in . In a lock the water thrust is different each side, Due to the hull pushing the water against the walls . So it would be next to impossible to use bow thrusters .

People shouldn't be allowed to have thrusters until they've learned how to properly handle a boat with a single fixed pitch prop.

Speed kills. You approached the lock too fast. By the way, the thruster would have little or no effect at that speed.

That lazy good for nothing fool up on the wall should have helped guide the boat in with a guide rope. But the boat was also going way to fast.

What? No pics of the very likely dent / roughed up side rail? ? Me thinks the skippers buddy has seen these boating skills before. . Hit the side? Going too fast? O well!

Can't really blame you. Anyone one who has operated a boat that size in a current knows it's not easy to thread the needle like that. That's why rub rails are standard issue! Can't be perfect everytime.

Why didn't the guy on the bow use bumpers for the pilot....just not good boating skills. It's not the lock masters job to keep crafts off the walls.

Chiming in with every one else. It seems that when motor boaters turn their engines on, they turn their brains off as if that motor is going to do the thinking for the driver.
