@@chrismiller5940 that's kind of the thing (and I'm going to treat it as spoiler because we're not there on YT yet) That 'birthday raid" - technically she followed international law by warning them that an attack was imminent... but she did it in a way that not a single person in the city would take her seriously, ensuring maximum damage and carnage to the enemy. And there are other examples of exploiting loopholes like that in the series. That would be why I say her "not being evil" is "debatable".

Tanya is a complex character, so just going with "evil" is rather reductive. But if it needs to be boiled down to the minimum, her alignment really depends on how you feel about "the ends justify the means." She is the ultimate pragmatist and her goals are to end the war as quickly and with as little overall damage as possible, and find a cushy and safe job, away from any warzone. If a single massacre will mean the war stops a year earlier and thus prevent a whole lot more people from losing their lives than the massacre killed, that's a net-positive and thus a good investment... as long as it does not violate any law or rule. So by D&D terms she's either lawful neutral or lawful evil. Her mindset is certainly comparable in part with devils, who religiously stick to rules, but by their letter, not their spirit. If there is a loophole, exploiting it is perfectly legitimate. Violating the letter of the law on the other hand is unthinkable and can not be done, no matter the consequences. The problem is, that the anime is really playing up the "evil" part and makes it look like she revels in the carnage, only to roll it back and remark how unfortunate all the killing is in internal dialogue or conversations afterwars, sometimes making me wonder if she might have a split personality or something in that medium. In the source material (i.e. the novel) and the manga both, she hates waste of lives and resources and the only time she goes "gleefully berserk" is when she's high as a kite due to an accidental overdose of magical stimulation.

Yeah lets gooo!! By the way, this anime suffers from a poor translation or localization of the original title, Youjo Senki, which means "The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl", changing it to The Saga of Tanya the Evil predisposes you to see the protagonist as evil when in reality Tanya is just a pragmatic person who will do what is necessary to achieve a goal. After the 12 episodes of the series there is an OVA and a Movie, are you going to react to these too?

The sound design in this show is god tier. Every explosion, every gun shot, every spell cast just booms the bass just right and sends chills down the spine. The art style is very unique, and while it can get ugly at times, it's never really out of place. The animation quality, in general, is high tier, flowing well when we get airborne. It's just a very well-made anime and one of my favorites. Glad to see you watching it.

Been waiting for this one since you've watched Overlord. This series is a banger. Without spoiling anything, there will be a LOT of references related to our world in a pre-ww1 sense. Also, if an episode has a post-credits scene, I'd suggest to pay attention to them. A lot of said Easter eggs are in there. Also, there's a reason Tanya is "religious", but that's also a spoiler.

  • @zefyrisd69

You recognize the voice of Tanya probably because she's one of the most famous and most talented current Japanese voice actor. She's done Maomao, Madoka, Victorique(gosick), Kumoko (So I'm a spider so what), Tsuyu (my hero aca), lucy (cyberpunk edgerunner, Kino (kino no tabi), Tatsumaki (One punch man), etc etc (the list of main characters alone is way too long, she's always voicing several characters per season). And don't worry you'll get the explanations :). Ah btw while I'm at it, the CR translation is making a mistake with the altitude numbers. They're given without units in the original language, and it's pretty obvious after a while that they're in a unit closer of the feet rather than meters. So whenever you'll see in the sub "meters" for the altitude, I suggest you divide by 3 :) Also, I'll explain the pillbox because it's never explained (you have to put back the different information the episode gave you to understand what she did) but it's quite genius : She sent them in a pillbox on the rear. Normally, artillery wouldn't target that. And normally, if not in a pillbox, the mages, who can fly and shield, wouldn't fear very much artillery. However, as we see in the episode, the frontline has been ordered to move back in order to reduced the size of the western front. Which means that the soldiers not in pillboxes will move back in trench lines further back, abandoning the frontline, while being covered in their retreat by their artillery, pillboxes and mages. In this situation, the pillbox that they were sent in will stay manned, so those two will stay in it, but since the front is moving, it goes from backline to frontline, where it becomes a hindrance to the enemy which is trying to pursue the retreating soldiers. So suddenly, it is a priority target for the enemy artillery, and mages who would normally not fear artillery, get buried by the enemy artillery inside it just like any normal soldier. Because she punished them by sending them to the rear, what remains in her records is that she punished them without being harsh. And therefore, their death, which was calculated, do not actually get associated with her initial punishment. Even though Tanya had understood very well that the orders of retreating would be coming soon.

I don't think she sent them to a pillbox to ensure their death. It was a practical decision. Soldiers who do not follow orders are a liability in the front lines, you don't want them there. They also refused to go back (for retraining or some desk job) which was her first idea. A pillbox can be a dangerous place (because it does not move), but it still has to be manned, someone has to be there. Also, in a pillbox, you do not have many choices of what to do. You sit there and shoot at an enemy if you see them. So, an insubordinate soldier can do less damage there than the front lines. Also, by putting those two in the pillbox, two other soldiers (who presumably can follow orders and therefore are more useful) who were there originally could be sent to the front lines or wherever. It does not hurt that the punishment also appears to be not very harsh and logical (you want to disobey orders and charge - here, sit in this pillbox so that you cannot charge at all).

@@Pentium100MHz you didn't read what I wrote right ? The pillbox went from being in the rear to being in the front. The episode says several times that they're retreating the soldiers. This was 100% intentional from her. Like she said, "a pillbox doesn't move".but the Frontline certainly did.

The anime plays up her viciousness, but there was reason. Tanya hates what she terms “wage thieves”. Those who do subpar work and disrupt the work place and the like. And those two knuckleheads were slated to eventually move up to officer training. Bad for everyone and gonna get more folk killed. She did the army a favor by letting them get “achievements” like this, instead of. Also, mild note, the crazy look on her face when she fights is due to magical stimulants, similar to the practice of using certain drugs during… I think it was WW1? Perception, strength, reaction speed, ect boosts.

This series is in a kind of World War 1.5 . For their world it's the first world war, but as you noticed from the date, it's happening only in what in the real world was the inter war period. Between this and the existence of magic and different national borders shuffling their technological development compared to the real world, things are different than our 1924 still. So you'll see for example early WW2 technology for tanks, but the ships we see are early dreadnoughts that look like Nassau and Helgoland classes (in the manga, the anime doesn't give us a good enough view to tell the class), which became semi-outdated during WW1. The attachment to the leg in the anime is what enables them to fly. In the manga and novel they can fly with only their computation orbs, leading to the novel not having them at all and the manga bringing it in later as upgraded equipment meant to improve their flight capabilities. The devices with which they flight is a quick way to identify a mage's country of origin, since each country has their own distinct flying gear, that plays into their culture. The Empire (a superstate consisting of what in our world was Germany and most of Austria Hungary) has a boot + backpack setup, the Republic (essentially France) has these horse-like things, the Albion Commonwealth (quasi UK) has things that look like a cross between a broom and a motercycle and the forces of the Legadonia Tripple Alliance (Norway+Sweden+Finland united into a single country) use something that looks like skis. The thing with Tanya sending her two insubordinate subordinates to their death is really misleading in the anime. Those two guys disobeyed orders by their superior and their superior's superior multiple times in live combat. Her first choice of punishment is sending them back home without punishment, which is exceptionally lenient. But rather than accept it, they add yet another disobeying of a direct order by a superior to their tally. By the military law of the Empire, Tanya would have been well within her right to summerily execute them on the spot (and might even have done exactly that, when she started to draw her sword, if not for Victoria calling out to her), or put them in front of a war tribunal, which would most likely have sentenced them to death, both of which would have been "dishonorable" deathes that would see their families get no compensation and likly being scorned by the patriotic parts of their neighborhood for raising such "traitors." By sending them to a bunker to be killed by the enemy, she made sure they would die "honorably in the line of duty," meaning a posthumous 2 rank promotion, their families getting monetarily compensated and being admired for being the relatives of "heroes" by the patriots and nationalists. So ironically, setting up their deathes like this is Tanya going out of her way to provide those idiots with the best outcome they could have hoped for. That smile is also anime-only. In the novel and manga she showed absolutely zero emotion over their deathes. But even within the anime that smile is rather uncharacteristic for her considering the situation, so I strongly suspect it was just put there as a hook, to help retain the interest of viewers more attached to combat, despite all the talking and setup the second episode has to get through, before the next fight.

(obviously im not the target audience, it's more of a guy power fantasy thing) With that said, if u enjoy the themes/vibe of this anime, I recommend "Dies Irae" as a "if you watch this you might also like..." xd I hope you enjoy tho! 4:12 i think i've never heard someone to use "gray" tinge, instead of a color. Usually one would call it muted colors x: 5:02 she is voiced by Yuuki Aoi Characters u might know: Maomao (Apothecary Diaries), Froppy (HeroAca), Diane (Nanatsu no Taizai) to name a few (not sure what else you might have seen)
