    @@brianhourigan4472 well recorders sampled on a mellotron keyboard for the live performances. But in the original studio version it was overdubbed multitracked tenor/alto/bass recorders in harmony. Presumably to get that medieval feel.

    Another wonderful reaction and breakdown video. Yes, this performance was epic, but in my opinion, the album version of this rock anthem sends the message in the most beautiful and emotional way possible, and has more impact than any live version.     You cannot imagine the chills, and goosebumps when you first hear Jimmy starting to play Stairway. I saw them twice (75 and 77). I really felt like my hair was standing on end. Four of the best musicians ever. Each was a master of their instrument. Great reaction. Thanks!

    PLEASE treat yourself to listening to the original studio recording from a couple of years earlier. Yes, this live performance is iconic and I was actually at this show in 1973, but you need to hear the original recording when Roberts voice was at its peak before becoming road worn from all the touring. Plus what is considered by many as the best guitar solo of all time, the entire performance and production of the original recording is a masterpiece!

    In the 70’s and into the 80’s there were 3 rock anthems that were arguably the “best”: Stairway to Heaven, Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Won’t be Fooled Again by The Who. All worth a listen.

    Just watch Page's face during the solo and you can see this is a man suffering for his art; he stretches and reaches to squeeze out every possible emotion and makes his guitar sing, cry, wail, laugh and ultimately takes us on a journey of light and darkness, energy, motion and transcendence.

    The flute is actually a recorder and is being played by JPJ on the Mellotron. The idea of the recorder came from John Bonham. (Drummer) He came into the house and his son Jason was playing his school recorder.

    One of my favorite groups, also you should listen to Heart doing this song at the Kennedy center as a tribute to Led Zep with them in the bleachers. P S John Bonham's son Jason is playing drums in this one as well.

    They came out when I was 6 years old. Then it became part of the holy trinity of the groups that started heavy metal , which is led zeppelin black sabbath And deep purple. They all save me from pop rock and wishy. C***, that put me to sleep. Black Sabbath was called Earth originally. And they are a Blues band when they started out, and by the way cutie. The earth's material is on youtube now

    On the studio version, the 'flute' part is played on recorder by John Paul Jones (who plays keyboard here), who also suggested the instruments to give a medieval feel. Jimmy Page originally planned that that line would be played on electric piano, while he was writing the guitar parts, but liked JPJ's idea of recorders better.

    My go to song!! Only one band did it justice when covered. Heart sang Stairway to Heaven when Led Zeppelin was honored at the Kennedy Ceremony. I think it was 2010. Very moving tribute. Check that one out

    Nice reaction. You should listen to the studio versions of their songs first. In the studio Led Zeppelin were exceptional, and this song is phenomenal in the studio. Live is they are great of course too and always their way of experimenting and improvising on the idea.

    No back vocals duet or orchestra just the awesome voice of Robert Plant - the greatest rock 'n' roll singer ever, The amazing guitar playing by the best guitar player in the world Jimmy Paige (outside of Jimi Hendrix) and the multi talented JPJ on Bass guitar and keyboards, and last but not least the best drummer in the world John Bonham, the four GOAT's at their prime.     Does anyone remember Casey Cason doing the top i think 100 songs on the radio on New Years Eve? FREEBIRD was always listed #2 and STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN #1 . i love Zep no doubt, but Skynnyrd was and still is my favorite band. I was always hoping Freebird would take the #1 spot just one year lol. Not gonna argue greatest..not why im here. Just wanted to see if any other people here over 50 remember

    Amazing rock band! The band also dabbled in the occult. Althe symbols on their albums were actually the symbols each band member was given in some kind of occult ceremony. The lead singer had also purchased Alistair Crowleys Manson ( huge occultist) Theres a documentary on the band its a good insight on the band
