    Isn't it a bizarre result of the rules that if he'd been sent for the first challenge, he'd have a 3 match ban, he fouled badly *again* and if a second yellow was given at that point he'd have a shorter ban (1match) and by avoiding a second yellow altogether, he won't miss any games! Baffling

  • @liammilne2242

    @liammilne2242

    @@tdh1990The more bizarre part to me is in retrospect the’ve admitted the first challenge was a red… They admit he should’ve been sent off for the second challenge as a follow up yellow to the mistake. Neither were given, now Kovacic doesn’t get any ban, and the PGMOL won’t give him the ban after the fact despite the clear and obvious errors that took place during the game. Not even for Arsenal’s sake, but for the teams facing City in their next 3 fixtures, will now have Kovacic to at least think of, when he should be suspended.

    I'd love for you to watch/use the rugby example from the weekend as something that would immediately benefit football. If you didn't see it, there was an example in the first half of the England/Samoa game where Samoa had a try given, the game was restarted with no arguments from any players and all went on as normal. A couple of minutes later their version of VAR got involved and disallowed the try with full conversation with the Ref relayed to TV. The score was reset while the game was being played and there has been no scandal following the game. It was dealt with in-game, everyone understands and accepts the decision...because it was correct. I'm not saying we should copy rugby but if something clearly works, why be so arrogant as to think football can come up with better or hide behind 'the laws of the game don't allow...'. @vega6003 The refs unfortunately don't referee by the books or we wouldn't get these decisions. Michael Olivers refusal to give Kovacic a 2nd yellow was based on the mantra of "let's not ruin the spectacle by sending a player off" which isn't in the rules of the game. Its not the refs job to ensure the game is entertaining, it's their job to ensure its fair. Unfortunately Arsenal haven't made anywhere near as much noise as Liverpool because we got the right result which will probably mean it will be forgotten about and the officials will sweep it under the carpet as usual.

  • @OmarYoussef11

    It seems one of the biggest VAR problems we have in the PL is that the approach the PGMOL took to it is one of ''its a work in progress'' rather than ''lets make it the best we can from the offset''. The result of this attitude is that the fans, players, coaches and clubs feel like the PGMOL just makes up the rules as they go and they are right to feel that way because this is, effectively, what they are doing. Like Mark says, how was it not a thing, from the beginning, to say out loud the decision you're confirming after saying ''check complete'' in order to avoid miscommunication? That sounds like a basic radio-communications principle two guys on a job site with walkie-talkies would understand the importance of. Furthermore, the fouls and handballs are looked at with an inconsistency that is baffling. Identical incidents will deem 3 or 4 very different interpretations based on who the ref is and which game it is. The handball rules modifications are a joke to begin with, but the complete lack of consistency makes it 10x worse as a handball in one game wont be in another. Some of those handballs awarded you really sit there and wonder ''what would the player need to do to avoid that, play with his arms taped to his body? How is a modification of the handball rule paired with that refereeing approach make for a better football game let alone one that is more fair?
