    My man should definitely stick with the 800. He made that look so easy. I think he can break 1:45 this year.

    Track can be such a brutal sport. You see guys like Sumner and Whitmarsh continuing to improve in college on legendary high school careers, and then compare that to what we've seen from Cade Flatt. The guy has vanished this year. I don't know if it was because of injury or what, but I was really hoping to see them all light up the NCAAs.

    Running that smoothly at almost even spits, he has at least 1.0, maybe 1.5 more seconds in him. If they split under 52 at nationals he should go about 1:44.8. Keep him in the 800. Not enough pure speed for the 400.

  • @No_One1_Special

    @No_One1_Special

    I don’t necessarily disagree that the 800m will ultimately be his best event, but how much more pure speed does he need? He ran 21 mid for 200m and 45.7 for 400m in HS with almost no weight training.

    @@No_One1_Special watch the 4x400. He got hammered by Ryan Willie of Florida, by nearly 2 seconds. Maybe if he did hit the weights, but he would have to be at least 20.20 at 200 to be a 400 contender.

    i think he realistically hits 1:45.85 for his pb this season, but wouldn't be surprised if he hits 1:45 low. I'd be very surprised if he breaks 1:45:00, but the sky really is the limit for him, so it's definitely possible for the kid

    For individual races, he needs to stick with the 800. His anchor on the GA 4x400 showed he is not in the "elite" class of 400m runners yet. He has done a few sub-45 second relay legs, but with several NCAA athletes capable of sub-44, he will do much better at 800m.

    Duh of course he isn’t an elite 400m runner. He is a 800m runner. Lets put those anchor runners in a 800m against him and see what they do. He split a high 44 and not surprisingly the 400m runners split a 43 low and a 44 low.

    His versatility and range is really impressive. He looks like a middle distance runner with 400/800 blazing speed. You can’t teach 44/45 second 400m speed. What is his PR in 1500m and 5000m? Think Sumner could be a beast in 800m-1500m range with that closing speed.

    I think he can break 1:45 next season and make the Olympic team next summer. He gets to 1:45 low and he’ll be threatening for a world championship team spot this summer. Top 3 at NCAA’s would be good this year.

    I mean, is it even a question? 800m. It’s impressive to be able to run 45 on a relay split, but it’s “maybe one day make a global final” speed rather than true contender speed over 400m. That speed is going to take him a lot farther in the 800m. That’s base speed good enough to make you a legend status contender over 800m if you’re capable of speed endurance. (Rudisha for example had a PB around 45 seconds over 400m) Which it looks like he is.
