My brother- in- law knew Julia Child. Years ago, he was hosting a large antiques fair. There were many vendors. People like Tasha Tudor ( with whom he was also friendly) and Julia Child would come and speak at his events. After one of Ms. Child's classes, she asked if she could get something to eat. It was late and the only food my brother-in-law could find available in the arena was hot dogs! He was mortified that all he could offer one of the world's greatest chefs was a hot dog. Nonetheless, he took it to her. She was thrilled! She said she hadn't had a hot dog in many years and thought it was a real treat!

Here’s a little story of Julia child. My mother in law used to babysit for her in New Haven Ct . A very Polish Italian neighborhood in the city. Houses were an arms reach away from each other with only a smidge for a yard. People could open their kitchen windows and borrow sugar. lol most of the homes were 3 stories tall. These families back then were huge like a minimum of 6 kids. I always loved Julia Childs approach on life and cooking much as my mother in law teaching me authentic polish cooking. I have updated to be healthy but still treasure and look Back on their recipes. I also passed these traditions onto my family. Love to see that delight we both share

Every year I struggle deciding which ones to plant. I’ve acquired quite a collection throughout the years. I’m also trying to only grow 20 plants this year and I am sitting right now with my seeds trying to decide which ones to plant! It’s both the most exciting time in the most frustrating time. I always think if only my garden was as big as Jessica’s! But I see the struggle never goes away!

Chicago area, 11 WBLF, and I already have 7 trays of 72 under lights and sprouted, but I have to confess only one is food (greens/cole crops). The early spring flowers are my first to drop in Jan, gotta ring the dinner bell for the pollinators. This weekend comes another round of greens/Cole and I can't wait to get tomatoes started first of March. I got the 'mater-itch bad.

Another Chi-suburbanite here & chomping-at-the-bit... Too early and the plants suffer. They always catch up when started mid-March.

Good Morning Ms. Jessica. I too start my babies on or around St. Valentines Day. My rose seeds are all started outside on the sunny side (south-east facing) of my house with a hose bib sprinkler timer. I usually find that my rose seedlings begin to pop out sometime around late March. Living here in Humboldt County California I find that protecting my seedlings from snails and slugs tends to be my biggest thorn in the flesh as these mollusks definitely are my nemeses. This year we are getting a lot of rain so keeping them wet doesn't seem to be a problem, so far. God bless your garden this year.

I have a similar system up here (on a MUCH smaller scale than you, Jess)! I start the baby plants in clear plastic storage tubs with two full spectrum shop lightssuspended in them and heat mats, then move them out to my very tiny, brand-new greenhouse when it gets a bit warmer in our Vermont landscape. It's a good way to go, I lose less plants this way. Years ago, my second husband and I had a short time of enjoying a sunporch that faced east, and it was so luxurious! I started my seeds out there, we ate breakfast and dinner out there, drank coffee out there, it was glorious. I have tried to brainstorm adding a sunporch on all of my residences since, haven't managed it yet. Jess, I had about 150 little tomatoes last year, gave them away, planted them in my flower beds, had them frosted and had to replant them all, and ultimately was really glad I had them all! I start them your way. I am a total wild gardener, even at almost 74, and I have no plan except that I will have a prolific garden this year, after last year's fiasco of flooding and silt. We also got a flood here in DECEMBER, which I haven't yet laid my eyes on the damage of that flood to my garden, due to all the snow, but it's OK. I will grow something lovely. And yummy. Maybe this is the year to contemplate raised beds. like seriously.... 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅

Feb 15 is my husbands birthday! Here in central east coast of Florida I was supposed to start seeds in December and it ended up being in January. I start them on my screened patio on a 4ft table where they get the sun. I put them on heat mats this year as we get into the 40s on some nights. Now I am concerned I stunted my peppers. Second year ever gardening and I will be 51 in a month. You and your family along with Acre Homestead were 100% my inspiration to try. I 2020 to 2023 was a very traumatic couple of years, my dad dying, my health, the church we were in for 17 years left due to leadership corruption that shocked whole place, started counseling and gardening has helped so much. I have no space whatsoever but put three rows of pavers next to back garage that face east. Placed every large container I had, 5 gal grow bags from amazon, 1 elevated planter from wholesale store, and three Green Stalks later…. Thanks for wanting to be on you tube you probably have saved thousands of folks from their minds racing to stop and watch a video! I know you saved mine! This old gal who loves growing radishes truly thanks you!!!

My mom has all my seeds in her basement closet.. just waiting.. Since I can't start my own seeds yet, I'm thankful to watch people like yourself start them so I can live vicariously through you. I've blocked out an hour today to, um, 'finish' choosing my seeds & will start with tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, & spinach... maybe. I do have a difficult time but the constraints of my tiny 2 x 8 garden helps me decide. If I get too rambunctious with over-selectioning seeds, well, they will go into containers, lol! And yep, bloopers are so fun. 🙂Thanks Jess!
