    the options in this situation are the following: 1) give the colony brood for raising its own queen(long and risky as they failed one time and their population drops, depends also by the season) 2) compine with a queenright colony (and split at the proper time if you want the colony back. the safest and faster method to save the colony before it turns worker laying) 3) requeen (with caged queen it would be a fail 95% for that long time queenless colony, but you can make a 3 frames split, introduce the caged queen in this tiny split and one week later combine the split with the queenless colony)

    Z Pan i agree with you. IMO, there’s just not enough nurse bees to make a viable queen. And, they’re on the verge of having laying workers. I would have split this colony up and used the resources for nucs. They certainly pulled in the nectar and pollen like champs.

    No queen? Go into your other boxes an fine some fresh eggs,1 to 3 days old. put the frame eggs and no bees on it into the queen less hive 16 days should have a virgin queen All so bees don't like to be messed with too much 3x a month is plenty

    Did you brush all the bees off that frame? Seems like it would take a bit to get them all. I had a hive last fall that grew so fast that I have three deeps on it. This spring before I could split it, it swarmed. I captured that swarm, and about a week later the same hive swarmed again. I captured it as well. The original swarm is doing great. In about two weeks they have filled a deep almost completely with only a couple drawn frames, and have good food stores. The second swarm I see no sign of eggs, but it has only been 3-4 days. I needed to move the hive so opened it up. They have drawn out a couple deeps. Hoping there is a mated queen, but I did not want to disturb them more than I already did to look for her. The original hive, still has a lot of bees, probably 4-6 lbs, but there are no eggs anywhere. Why would they swarm and leave the source hive without a queen?

    Darrell, thanks for the videos. I'm a newbee in Western NC, it's Nov. 30, and my frames look just like those in your video - loaded with honey and nectar, but no brood and I didn't see the queen. But that's not unusual, I rarely ever have, even when she was laying. The colony is about the size of the one in the video. Beginning 6 weeks ago I treated it with Apivar and started baggie feeding 2:1, which I have faithfully continued. The only other colony I have is a feral one in a beat-up old box which is honey-bound. There's no way, that I know of, to get any brood from that box without making a real mess. Is there anything I can (and should) do this late in the year? The temps are in the 60's right now.

  • @dfishman76

    This time of year here in NC adding brood would just be taking away from the other hive and would not really benefit the hive you are giving it to because they can’t requeen them selfs this time of year. Some would say combine the two hives and that’s an option. I myself would just let them be and see what happens.

    Will the new introduced bees from the nuc attack the bees in the existing box or does the queen control that action? I’m queen less and down to about 100 bees and was wondering whether just to let them finish their life cycle or put a nuc in to use the resources and combine the bees.

    They need an egg or larvae less than three days old to produce a viable queen, 16 days from egg to queen. 13 days from larvae to queen. Dude get an bee cycle calendar anywhere on the internet. They feed 6;days royal jelly cap then hatch 10 days after capping a queen is there but then does she fly and breed and then does does she return then does she stay and lay good luck. It’s a month for the process to fulfill complete.

    I have a hive that I could not find a Queen in it additionally the bees are back filling the cells in the brood nest. I did find some queen cups that were empty, and no new eggs in the brood nest . That said its looking like swarm to me , so I cut out two capped Queen cells from another hive and place them in this colony thinking I can save some time on re-queening this colony . I did this 3 days ago , I will check on my cells in a couple of days to see if the cells are in tack and if they swarmed ?

    Hey something I learned from a 40 year beekeeper, don’t flip your frames. Instant kill of larvae and eggs. You are moving them around in their cell and they drown. Keep the frame up, don’t flip, just turn it around to view. That will help with population and queen cells.

    Hello, great video. Thanks. I have a few questions. I have a very similar hive, except I DO have a queen. She's been in there a few weeks. She's big and golden yellow. The bees seem to give her a lot of attention. However No eggs, No larvae, and no capped brood. I have given them several weeks to see if she would start to lay but still nothing. The activity is starting to drop and I'm worried I may loose the hive. I've only got one other and it's doing very well. I was hoping to add a queen. I was hoping to avoid stealing a frame of brood from the other hive as to not set them back. The queen rite hive is newer and only 3 weeks or so since installed from a nuc, Question is, if they accept a mated queen, could the hive survive? or must I add a frame of brood. I live in Florida, weather is great and they have a LOT of honey and pollen.

  • @dfishman76

    @dfishman76

    +evanfly if it was me I would just add a frame of brood to that hive. Sometime queens stop laying when it get so hot. (or at least I think they do) I have added a frame of brood to a hive like you are describing and the queen started laying like her butt was on fire. If your in FL you have plenty of time for them to build up. Thanks for watching

    What happened is: The dearth hit. When a colony is full of screaming begging to be fed larva and the nectar flow stops cold... the bees will start eating the eggs so that they don't have to listen to crying babies that can't be fed.

    Hi dfishman Riley, I've found that a hive is queenless and could have been like that for 2 to 3 weeks, there's a few larvae but plenty of workers. Is it saveable? What is the longest time a hive can be queenless and re-started by adding a queen or a queencell. Alternatively I've got a 5 frame hive that I could merge but it's smaller in worker number, is there any danger in merging with a larger, queenless, hive?Your opinion would be appreciated.

  • @dfishman76

    @dfishman76

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Arthur Giles if you have a hive you can merge it with that might be your best bet (depending on where you are located) This late in the summer drone numbers are on the way down and if you could intro a frame a brood to allow them to make a new queen there might not be enough drone to allow her to get matted properly. Without looking at the hives that my best advice. I have a video about combining 2 hives using the newspaper method. That's one way you can combine them

    Hi Darrell, First I would like to say that I enjoy your videos very much, I find them very informative and my wife and I are learning allot. This is our 2nd year of beekeeping and we are loven it. One of our hives we think has gone queenless, we are going to go through the hive again tomorrow to make sure. This hive has no capped brood, no larvae, and no eggs, pretty good sign of being queenless. We are running 10 frames and double deep. Should we go down to a single deep and add a frame of brood and eggs from another hive or stay with the double deep? We still have allot of bees in the hive. Also these bees have always been very docile and now they are very testy. Hope to here from you with any advice you might have. Thanks, Dan

  • @dfishman76

    @dfishman76

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Danny Johnston taking them down to a single box would not be a bad idea. When you do that you make it easier for them to defend the hive because their numbers will be dropping off if they are queenless. Being pissy is a good sign of them being queenless too. Adding the frame of eggs and larva is a great idea. Even if they are not queenless this will help the hive out. One thing is for sure they will make queen cells if they are queenless. Keep me posted on how the hive is doing. Thank you for watching the videos

  • @dannyjohnston4550

    Thanks so much for your advice. How long does it take for them to produce a queen and once there is a laying queen, do the bees destroy any other queen cells or do we have to do that. Also my wife wants to know what do we do with the upper box that is filled with honey, nectar, and pollen?

  • @dfishman76

    @dfishman76

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Danny Johnston from an egg to a queen will take 16-18 days. Then add 4-6 days for her to go out on mating flights. So your looking at 24-26 days for any new eggs. As far as the box storage you can keep it somewhere where it will get light to it that will help keep the wax moths away sometimes. If wax moths do get into the hive before you can put it back on the hive you can freeze the frames to kill them

    "How many" isn't a very nice question. As an example will volunteer some embarrassing info. I don't care about reputation so I can spill my guts. Last fall I had 40. Maybe it was 39 but this spring only 15 were alive. Ironic part is that the untreated bunch only lost a couple. I lost nearly every colony THAT HAD BEEN TREATED FOR MITES. That's weird but the truth. I've split and let a couple swarm because I needed the swarm cells to rebuild with. I'm back to 40 today but that can change with a quickness. If you know what you're doing bees breed like roaches.

    Bees do like top entrances, more than the beekeeper does. I noticed building up a new colony's to get them to move into a new box I would lift a frame of brood up into it above the queen excluder, if you have atop entrance a month later you will have a laying queen above the queen excluder, this is very useful to build up the colony for a while then pull her out to start a nuc and a month later you have another laying queen above the queen excluder. I find it really useful, I always have a spare queen if I need one and it is a secondary queen raising program that requires no effort or planning it just happens all by itself. I had almost stopped using queen excluder's now I am back into them but for different reasons.

    If they hive is already weak and their numbers are low chances are they will not survive even if you add a frame of brood for them to try to requeen themselves. By the time the new queen is hatched (if their about to make queen cells) the numbers in the hive may be to low to recover from it.

I thought I would give her a few more days before putting a frame with eggs in from another hive. Do you have any ideas why she would stop laying. Don't know for sure how old she is, she was in a nuc purchased this past April from Kelly's Bees.

    I would go ahead and put a frame of eggs in the box. The longer you wait the longer it will be before the hive has a new queen. Turn over time on a new queen could me 24 or so days (including mating flights) and then another 2-3 weeks before you have new workers. Sooner the better. With her still being in there they might not make queencells.

    +OkieRob the only time I have had this happen is when the queen died and I did not catch it for a couple of weeks. I have never had a worker start laying after doing this to a hive.

    Thanks, i was mainly trying to see how long a hive could go without a queen before a worker started laying.

    +OkieRob I would say a few weeks after the queen has died and all the larva has been capped. At this point all options are over with the hive will die so a worker starts laying.

    Boy, you really got me thinking on this one. First off, the amount of pollen and nectar i that colony was incredible. I’ve heard of people requeening hives during a flow and getting extra honey this way as they aren’t raising brood. At the same time, you had enough food resources for 10-15 nucs if you could find brood. Now, here’s my one concern. A colony that far out with no brood likely has no nurse bees. I think that spells trouble for letting them make a queen. I wonder if perhaps allowing another colony to make you a queen cell would have been better then transferring that capped cell over to this box? I’m thinking you’d get a better queen that way. But, of course I’m no expert. Perhaps you could share how this situation ended? Did they get a good queen?

    Wrong! Was involved with a bee club that has over 400 members. I can count the beekeepers on one hand. That means 99% are bee havers. The meetings are like a broken record where the experienced preach onto deaf ears. What stinks is where and who. The members in general are highly educated professionals that can't be taught.

    hey there I live in Houston and my area flooded real bad, and so did all my beehives, most of the bees are dead, and idk weather I should knock off all the dead brood. killing any surviving eggs and or larva, or just out the hive back together and take the change of having a hive Beatles infestation. what would you do? oh and I'm oreety sure my queens dead.

  • @dfishman76

    @dfishman76

    I would have to take that hive by hive. If most of the bees are dead here is what I would do. I would check all the hives and see if you had any surviving queens. If so I would make up that may hives. Say I had 3 queens I would make up 3 hives. Here what you will have to do to make his successful. You will need queen cages for the queens that way you can put the queen in the hive with bees for other hives. If you don't put them in a cage they will kill her because she if a foreign queen to them. I would take the best looking frames gram all the hives and that what I would put in these hives I am making up. If you don't not have queen cages best thing you can do is double stack the hives. Shake bees in the bottom hive and separate the 2 with news paper. Cut small slits in the paper and this will allow them to slowly come together. Is might work or it might not. I would say 50/50 on it. The rest of the frames you do not use I would freeze and them put them somewhere until you need them.

    I hate to hear about your bees and if you have anymore questions ask them and I will try to answer them asap. Those are just suggestions and there may be other solution but those are the 2 things I would do if that would of happen to me. Good luck. Let me know what you do and how everything works out.

    +dfishman76 yea, I'm 16 and I've been beekeeping for two years now and I've fallen in love with them. my dad told me earlier that he layed the boxes (that were floating in water) on a small patch of dry land, and that there were a small golf ball size swarm of bees on the corner, maybe some escaped and will come back...but I doubt it, do you know of any place I can buy more bees? just in case these few hundred don't make it either?

    If you have another hive you can put in a frame of broom with eggs 1-3 days old and they can make queen cells from them. Or you can buy another queen bee. If the already have eggs that are 1-3 days old they can make queen cells from them

    Two methods that seem to be effective involve the use of organic acids. 1. Formic acid Mite-away quick strips and Formic Pro. Highly effective but must be used according to directions. Youll hate the weatherman because you need accurate forecasts. lol 2. Oxalic Acid. Vapors or dribble. We use the provap 110. It's close to $500 for that little do-dad.

    Use mineral oil if mites are bad use a couple drops of spearmint in with the oil Cheek out youtube pleanty of videos on it. In useing a insect fogger you get a hardware store, you have to do it once week for 3 weeks to get the mite cycle. Oxalis is a good way but watch out for the vapors, they are really bad. Formic stipps can't be leafs in ass it will make your bees sick after time.

    There's the ego thing. It's rare to see youtube videos of anything negative in the bee yard. Crawling bees with deformed wing virus is one that needs to be done but none of the "monetized bee guys" will admit it happens to them. They never show a deadout in April orr May but focus on selling stuff to brite-eyed greenhorn beeks. I triple-dog-dare them to make a series called "Beekeeping. What could possibly go wrong?".
