No, PRO photographers do NOT always get GOOD photos...
Sometimes landscape photography can be uninspiring, that happens to me too. In this video, I discuss this while telling the story of two outing I had in Cornwall. One where I wasn't too inspired and one where I was and what the differences were.

I really like the black & white version of the breaking wave. The color version is good, but seems a little too muted to me. Also, thanks for sharing the frustration of your uninspired day at St. Ives. Thanks for sharing this, Mads.
It is important for professionals to convey that they fail a lot, but what makes them professionals is that they don't give up and persevere to end up with that special few photos that can make it all worth while and profitable. The more you get out and shoot, the more likely you'll be at the right place and right time to capture something special
Loved the black and white image of the breaking wave Mads and the sea stack image looked great too. Hope your presentation to the Ayr Photographic Society went well last well. I presented to them the week before but knew you were presenting the following week and told them they were in for a great night with you as your work is so inspirational and has been a major influence in my own development 🙂
I appreciate this post. For every great shot we post, there's 10-500 that didn't work out.
Very inspiring video. Love the B&W wave shot best. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Holiday Season to you and your Family.
Loved this video. The black and white wave shot was stunning. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Love the black and white pier photo Mads! There are days even with planning that photographers come back with just ho-hum shots. It's just part of the process. The trick is to just keep going out and keep trying.
Just saw the B&W image of the wave smashing into the jetty and that’s a wall hanger!! B&W never gets old to me, in fact it always opens up my eyes to a bold new future!!!! Thanks Mads and Merry Christmas!!
That B&W of the exploding wave is brilliant!!
Hi Mads great video and love the format of chatting on the sofa. I was actually born and brought up in Portreath, leaving when I was aged 19 (I'm 60 now) but still have family there. So nice to see you visited the village and great to see it on KZread!
The pier photo in B&W is IMHO the best way to present this subject. Enjoyed the video.
Loved the black and white of the crashing wave!
Valuable insights Mads. I think you captured how it is for all of us at times. You made an important point when you said that at least by getting out you have something to remember. When I am feeling uninspired and I push myself to go out I always feel better mentally even if I don't come back with any good images. And like you did, when I really look at them I often see something I kinda like. As always thanks for the inspiration, Mads. I love the sea spray in black and white.
Loved the color version of the wave breaking on the lighthouse.
Huge thanks for the honesty. It is good to know that we are all frustrated every now and then ...
Thanks so much for sharing this, it certainly helps to know that everyone has challenges when it comes to taking great photos, even the professionals like yourself! Enjoy the holiday season!
Definitely the black and white photo. The contrast between the waves and the rocks/pier comes out much stronger in black and white than with the subtle colors.
Like the mono version of the Porthleven pier shot. Good to hear that even 'pros' have a "meh" day and highlights the benefits of preparation
Thank you for this video, Mads! I'll be photographing the ocean in a few days and your tips are priceless.
Meh is needed to truly appreciate yeh! Love your dogged determination! Gorgeous shot of the wave crashing into the pier. Like both b/w and colour….very different mood in each version.
Reality in photography vlogs is important to show. Thank-you
I love the black and white image of the breaking waves, love the drama. I really enjoyed this video, I felt like we were having a conversation about having a good day but then a better day photographing an area you aren't super familiar with. It's good to hear that even the pros sometimes struggle 🙂
Subject, composition, light; ‘nuff said. I think that’s your point. May not have the ideal of any single element but working the combination of the three can produce rewards. Thanks
Great advice! Thanks
Thanks, I find your uninspiring day quite inspiring ! In fact I'm going to head right now... I prefer the black and white photo btw.
I think this "Mads coffee talk" style of video worked out great! Your narration /insights overlaying on-scene footage felt very comfortable and polished. I hope you do more of these in the future!
I love the colour version best, of the crashing fan-shaped wave at Portreath, the contrast of the foamy white of the wave has more depth to it, and it pops out of the picture, I feel, more than in the b&w version. Stunning photo. Its great that you experienced the mystical magic of Cornwall with Nigel and James. Here, in Cornwall, we have a saying…. “it is raining” or “it is about to rain!”
Loved the B&W image of the crashing wave
Interesting video & some great shots - thanks Mads!
Fabulous video topic - I really appreciate you sharing this. It's just not possible to be inspired every single time you go out, but you certainly did persevere. I would have been back having coffee long before you gave up at the first location lol
Interesting vlog thank you. I always think from a photography perspective 70% is the location and planning beforehand, so you have some ideas before arriving then it is up to the weather . I also think you have to enjoy your surroundings which always helps. Glad you enjoyed your recent visit to the Lake District, I am lucky enough to live here, so am always happy with the location.
Love the black and white photo with the big waves
That was great Mads, enjoyed that. I like both, the b&w has more impact but I think I prefer the colour, hard choice.
Loved the video. I loved the black and white image of the wave blasting the sea wall.
I love the format of this video. Feels like I’m in your living room with you. I also appreciate the wisdom you’ve shared. It is helpful to know that sometimes you are not inspired and preparing makes a difference. The black and white was my favorite.

As good as he is in the video, he's even better in person! I had the opportunity to attend his Tuscany workshop back in May, Mads is just a great guy all around. I got hooked on his USA tour videos as I live in the desert SW. Those videos lead me to his Iceland and Faroe Islands video, which are both on my photography bucket list. Was supposed to visit Iceland but then Covid hit.
Madds I really enjoyed this video ... Low Key Laid back and really helpful and instructional !!
A fireside chat without the fire. A burning fire would be a nice touch maybe. Carry on! 🔥 👍🥂
Love the bnw of the pier - well done!
love the black and white wave photo. I'm not usually a black and white kinda person, but it works great here.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Always a treat viewing your work. I did like the two street shots. Like you, that's really not my genre. Really liked the B/W photo also.
Eye of the beholder… I like the color version of the wave (and I love b/w photography). Beautiful shots all around !!!
Black and White feels moodier to me, beautiful shot! The sea spray shot is also neat! I never really understand in a shot like that how dark the cliffs on the left side should be. I am starting to think I always bring much, to much, back in my images. Great Video!
The wave pic is awesome... really like the black and white!
Your long exposures DO work for me. Excellent video and photos as always. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video. The image of the crashing wave is a beauty. Stay blessed 😇
Really interesting photos. Beautiful work, esp the sea spray. I favor the black and white.
I pr3fer the B&W photo also the portrait version of the path leading to the 3 sea stacks. Enjoyable video and understandably you want us to see your best. Some of us mere mortals do not always have time ( under pressure from others) to look for the best angle and end up trying to plagiarise what we have seen or end up with not so great a photo. Have really enjoyed your UK series recently.Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks Mads
The long exposure seastack is awesome!
Hi Mads, it’s Chris here. We met on the rocks at Godrevy on your recent trip to Cornwall. I enjoyed this video. Your thoughts about failure versus success resonate for me. I came away from that shoot at Godrevy with some mediocre images of the lighthouse (you weren’t happy with the lack of light!). But some really interesting intimate landscapes of the reflected light on the rock walls of that little canyon below the cliffs contrasted with the swirling waves. Maybe not epic, but with a beauty of their own. Go well! 😊
Mads never fails to satisfy...great insight!
The wave exploding on the jetty is a great shot. I like the colorful doors in town too. Today is a cold gray drizzly day here where I live. So, I don't think I'll do any photography today. Just one of the many reasons I'm an amateur and you're a pro. :)
Hi Mads I really like the crashing wave shot. I actually like the colour version more than the b/w.
Thanks Mads for sharing your thoughts ! I like the colored photo more than the black and white of the smashing wave. The colored one has enough impact and contrast for my taste. The town photo with the rain drains is a great photo !
I prefer the town photos… they are awesome 👍 The others are great to, but I find the foreground with stairs quite complex. Great video 👍
Enjoyed this format too pal
I can really relate to your thoughts here as I am lucky to be able to have some epic landscape at my doorstep for part of the year and then some urban street photo opportunities for the rest. "Inspiration" is usually really weather and light dependent- also, as James can attest, the odd sheep and farmers' gate ( and abandoned shepherd's hut!) helps a lot! I find fast shutter speeds make for a more honest sea portrait. I am not a big fan of the milky, long exposure look as it is very overdone just like the "chasing bokeh" craze!
I like both images. I also like the conversational presentation style video. I think it is better because it allows you to focus more on the photographs as opposed to jiggling the b-roll, and narration while dealing with changing light conditions. As you mentioned it allows you to present your best work.
From what I have seen of your work, it kind of seemed you were the guy who could get a great pic without pressing the shutter button. 😂, For me, this is one of your best videos as it gives me a better idea that things don't always go perfect for you, Nigel, James or Henry. Thanks for this.
Thanks Mads for an interesting and philosophical discussion. I think I like the B&W photo best. God Jul och Gott Nytt År.
Some scenery I love....
There's a really good vantage point to shoot the Monkey Hut at Portreath with the waves breaking right behind it in stormy weather. Nice shots of the stacks too. I'm lucky enough to live very close to these two spots.
I really do like the "pipes" photo and the big breaking wave photo in color. I do not really think that much of the sea-stacks, they are just run-of-the-mill sea-stacks. Any old sea-stacks. 2p to the dozen sea-stacks.
Hello mads, hope you make a video about the metering in taking photos, specially for landscape photography.
Loved your video. Thank you for being so real to see your struggles but you did not give up. I go through that constantly as a hobby photographer. Your B&W version is a strong shot. I like the color one as a personal choice but the b&w is a tad better. The 2 door pic is interesting. I noticed the wall between the two windows about the doors between the 2 units is very thin. Just a weird observation.
I feel this a lot recently. I just haven't found photos that speak to me. Hopefully this will change soon as I finally have a 100-400!
I prefer the b/w image of the breaking wave because it feels more dramatic and impactful than the colour version. Plus, you get the interplay between light & shadow. Also, the contrasting textures in the various elements stand out more.
Hey Mads thanks for the video, I like both lighthouse images I think they both have their place, I can see the black and white in a high end restaurant and the colour in someone's front room as a holiday souvenir. In one of your videos could you do a shot count how many shots you took, how many you like maybe even some horrible ones with the caption what was I thinking 😁. Love your style 👏👏
Of the two wave-against-the-lighthouse photos, I prefer the monochrome. It's more dynamic, and color just doesn't add anything.
I like the color version of the wave. My favorite is the foto of the lighthouse at 10.30. But as ALWAYS great fotos. For me you are one of the best landscape fotographers! Always inspiring to see your videos! Greets from Germany, Südwestpfalz! :-) P.S. Would be interesting to see a video or more from Germany, Südwestpfalz

@@johnsmith1474 and? Throwaway or not... Was my favorite...
I prefer the BW!
I think it was the James guy who said "if you get one photograph you are happy with, then they day is a success" Anyway, all youre photos were beautiful and you are very hard on yourself. Im looking at my photos from this morning and i got one where a tree is breaking the horizon towards the mountains and the sky and I like that the most. Have a beautiful day and come to Bergen in Norway and take photographs please 🥳🥳🥳
You have some keepers there. Of the wavesubject I like the BW best.
St Ives can be a right pain in the rear.... My mum and dad met on that beach many years ago! Lost count of how many pictures I have of godrevy! Absolutely love your channel dude! 👏🏻✊🏻
Been in st Ives many times, stunning place
As far as the B/W vs color, that particular photo appeals to me much more as a B/W. It eliminates the color cast in the spray which (IMO) takes away from the drama of the crashing wave.
They are both terrific images mostly because you captured the wave at its best point and the image is perfectly composed. I do prefer the B&W (I am a sucker for B&W) because the scene is very monochromatic anyway. BTW, I see you’re shooting the a7r5 now. I have found that the Tamron lenses, including the 28-200, hold up very nicely to the 61mp sensor.
I definitely prefer the color version of the crashing wave shot.
@johnsmith1474

TheBW is the better shot. The color moves it toward the commonplace.
could you have used a half shaded ND filter to bring the exposure down on the sky?
I’d be interested to hear more about how you research a location.
I preferred the black & white photo; it's such a dramatic scene and the black & white emphasizes the drama, while the color version mutes the drama.
Hi Great video. I think the B&W waves was your best shot.I am on the Atlantic coast USA but we don't get waves like that thought I am always hoping. Can you tell me the settings you used to get that shot? I see yourself and Nigel shoot without lens shades. Can you tell me why? Thanks
Nice video. Thanks for reminding us not all shoots are "winners." I like the b&w version, but the wall seems a bit busy and distracting. What could you do in this scenario to make the wall less busy/detailed?
My take - A day without a single good shot is still a good day. As a bare minimum it is a learning process. Why? It is time spent away from work and any other pressure or stress. Mindfulness.
Have to agree with others, the crashing wave is a great backdrop for the little building (lighthouse?)
I've seen many videos where pro photographers speak about the fact that they go out and fail to get any great to epic photos. I get it. If it was easy no one would do it. However, it's still frustrating to go out myself and find nothing interesting to shoot. I try to post something every week for my friends and family but sometimes it doesn't happen. I try to keep it all in perspective but sometimes I just get annoyed. By the way, I like the black and white version of the wave crashing the best. It seems to have more depth and overall impact.
If all else fails, turn it into a scouting mission!
I know I certainly fail a lot, but I overcome my disappointment when I know that nothing is working for me and just concentrate on enjoying being outdoors and engaging with nature. Once I get to that point, I put the camera and the tripod away and forget about them and any stress that I had just goes. I loved the black and white. The shape of the crashing wave is like when a peacock fans its tail feathers. The earlier one at St Ives of the wave cascading over rocks would have worked in black and white. And I like the street images. I think they would look good printed smallish and framed side by side on a wall.
Black n white what much better... seamed to "clean" the photos up abit. Made it easier to the eye. 🙂👍
Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t, but you gotta be out there to increase your chances! If the conditions are meh, then I usually just practice some different techniques so I’m ready for when the conditions are better.
What is that cap on the multi-interface shoe? Is that a standard cap for that camera? I'm always loosing the ones on my A1 cameras
I vote for B&W.
Interesting hot shoe cover on your Sony camera. Nikon one by any chance?
Hey mads. In one of Your videos You show an app where You could see how the light was effecting the landscape in a specific time of the Day but I simply cant find it again. Can You tell me the name of the app? ☺️
I prefer the wave photo in black and white. Definitely more dramatic and the colors distract from the scene.
Classic James not being bothered for golden hour. 🤣
call me bias but i feel like Thomas Heaton always gets amazing photos. lol
Colour
Kunne være lidt fedt hvis du lavede en video om dit nye kamera 😉
So, you ARE human afterall... ;-) PS - B&W image was a good conversion and provided much better impact than the colour version.
