this is one of the only tracks in sftd that actually don't have any ampeg, be it the v4, the vt40 or the vt22, apart from the chorus/bridge/breakdown, it's actually a tubeworks rt2100 and a peavey musician, both panned to opposite sides, can't remember which is left and right tho

Sweet! Is the PDF really worth it for this amp? Or is a Boss EQ gonna get the job done. Got the V40 and it does the sound great on its own, and using a treble booster seems to just about stick it. However, been interested whether using a Boss EQ or PDF1 would be better. The PDF seems rather boring to me on most amps…but on this circuit it seems to shine as a boost and EQ…not sure I’d bother using the built in higher gain much. But seeing as it’s a Baxandall EQ on both amp and pedal makes sense…you pushing 400hz or 500hz on the PDF? Also the other pedal looks like the old TS808/ O gain, adjust tone trick I use all the time in general on a lot of amps. I’m already using the 300hz boost on the amp.

I would get an EQ pedal instead, as you can cut the lows too, I use a tube steamer basically to cut lows and boost mids a tiny bit, minimal gain if any at all. I use the pdf for that really nasal thing, like on little sister, but most of their stuff doesn’t use a pdf imo. Not sure what frequency I’m pushing on the PDF as it’s a pot, I’d guess 800-1khz.

@@HarryAndAGuitaryeah regardless of amp I use the Jekyl and Hyde TS808 side at nearly 0 gain and adjust tone to do the same. My go to sound on my Sky King for light breakup, and a low cut. But yeah the JHS Germanium TB I have is boosting somewhere in the 1khz I believe, and the Ampeg amp is set with the 300hz boost already. Seems the EQ pedal would get the most mileage like you said. Thanks!

@@mattg082 no problem! The eq pedal is just so much more flexible and when you have a tubescreamer already you can just use that as a more ‘coloured’ boost like the pdf :)

@@HarryAndAGuitar yeah after looking a lot online…seems the PDF pedal is way blown out of proportion as the “sound”. If you have the amp already, and have access to the 300hz,800hz,1khz boost on the amp. Also the Tubescreamer at 0 gain is about an 800hz or so boost, as well as any treble booster hitting around 1khz. Makes me believe he used all rocker switch settings on different layers or songs, and it’s easier to toggle live with pedals lol. Seems like a lot of the online talk of getting these sounds, are people without the amp itself, trying to make some combo of pedals to do it on a Marshall or Fender. With the amp the more I look a boost, 300hz on amp set, the TS808 trick or a Treble Booster, and really any pedal that dimes a specific mid frequency as a boost or colored boost works. Little sister solo tones and such, the Foxxy tone nails it. Probably what they used in studio. Not sure why the PDF is pushed as “THE” pedal. My only guess is the ability to shift from 300,800,1k and several bands live through pedals and do the cocked way stuff. I feel in the studio it was probably a lot simpler with overdubs. PDF seems pricey as a parametric EQ and a boost….if you won’t even use the distortion. I’ve been online comparing the Boss EQ7 and PDF1X…I know they are different, but just deep diving what would really work best for this particular amp. Eric Valentine I think had a Boss parametric pedal he showed off as alternative. The distortion tone is already on the amp, and 80% there. But the pdf can do a wider Q like you would mixing lifting a wider 300-500 vs narrow…that’s the one thing that does intrigue me a bit about it. As you would do such things in post edit on a recording, or live against another guitar player. In recording with multiple guitar I tend to boost or cut the 300hz-500hz frequencies to balance. So I guess that’s going on as well live and studio to cut.
