I definitely think the original plan was that they were the ghosts of the Snow Elves. They might have been the survivors of the betrayal. They might have been victims of whatever made the Dwemer disappear. Either way, they're almost certainly elves.

I think it's worth noting that the Dwemer tablet in Markarth was translated by someone from BGS, and it was a message written by Dwemer and intended for Snow Elves. The interesting point here is that it refers to a 'music of eternity,' and when you get close to wispmothers, you can hear a sort of musical chiming. I'm not sure if this was intended to be connected, but Snow Elf and Dwemer text are both put close together in the Thieves' Guild storyline, and that big tablet was part of it. Deliberately placing these things close together suggests to me that it may have been intended as a hint.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate the consistent quality of videos produced by the Elder Scrolls youtube community? Channels like FudgeMuppet and Camelworks are keeping the TES fanbase alive and thriving, and the best part is they stay true to the to the original spirit of TES and don't just crank out a bunch of meaningless Elder Scrolls online videos, which would probably be easier and get more views, but they actually care more about the lore than being sellouts.

Think ESO's distribution of Wisp mothers lends to them being a ghost like product of trauma from the various Elven genocides, though could still include the early lost spirits in nirns formation in an earthbones style trasformation into lesser elemental powers.

It is heavily implied or outright confirmed in many ESO quests, that wisp mother are soul of elves that made some sort of pact with nature before their death. There's a one particular quest about it in black marsh region.

@@elvangulley3210 I bet you never actually play the game, because ESO care more about lore than Bethesda, they have to make create everything that fits the lore and have to get permission from Bethesda for literally everything they do. Whereas Bethesda doesn't have to do that, because they can just make new lore, which results in retcons and inconsistent lore, that is present across all the elder scrolls and fallout game. It's extremely stupid to say ESO is crap, when you have no idea about, pretty much everything we know about lore of thing like reachmen, or woodelves, or argonians or thalmor, we know all of that from ESO. ESO did so much to contribute to the lore of the world.

I'm really curious in learning the amount of lore the screwed, especially since they can't do anything without Bethesda permission, and that is said by Todd Howard himself.

I like the idea that the wisps are basically just vessels to hold the excess Magicka of the wisp mother. Like she can use magic, but she isn't able to store much of it herself. Then the reason destroying the wisps removes her Magicka is because she isn't able to hold onto the power without them.

Ill never forget the first time I met a wisp mother. I was wandering north of Aivarstead with my curious and inocent bosmer, when I saw a glowing ball flying through the trees. It passed by me and went into the trees of the forest and as I was curious to learn what it was I followed it. Then I sow her, a ghostly figure, beautiful but terrible started to attack me, I hid between some trees and started shooting some arrows that barely did damage. I was about to die when a dragon showed up and started to fight the wisp mother, and they fought for a long time. Finally the dragon took the final blow and the wisp mother was no more. I came out of my hidden place and sneaked the hell away from there. Truly a unforgettable experience

@@amber4305 ohhh thank you! Skyrim was truly a magical experience to me. The forests, the rivers, the old forts and the towns, so many places to explore. More recently I went to Morrowind and by Azura that was an amazing experience to. If you didn't played it yet I highly recommend. (Forgive me if my English it's not on point also. It is not my native tongue)

If the wispmothers are snow elves (and I think they are), I think a big part of their lore is in the tablet inscribed by the Dwemer to the snow elves. It implies that the blinding of the snow elves had to do with the Dwemer's experimentation with the earthbones and overcoming the limitations of the natural laws of the mortal world. With this in mind, I'd say the wispmothers are true undead like the Dunmer mage suggests, but they have an innate connection to elemental magics like the Synod mage suggests due to the experimentation with overcoming the laws of nature. I think that this also means that the blinding of the snow elves and their subsequent experiments was a major step for the Dwemer to obtain the knowledge needed to construct the Numidium which was supposed to act as a new tower of natural law releasing the Dwemer from the limits of the mortal world.

I don't think the Pale Lady wanted the sword, I think the ancient Nord sword was used to seal her away and placing it on the pedestal seals her away again.

Ra'jirr' is stated to have had nightmares that the Pale Lady is coming for the bandit crew if they don't return the sword, from her influence on him. In his note he elaborates that he knows it will seal her away, but she is the one pushing for the swords return.

Ah. We can get too caught up in the ins and outs. At the end of the day, this is not only fiction, but is very much fiction of today, ie highly contrived, thrown together just for the purpose of SALES. Now I can understand folks analysing Tolkien with much scrutiny, as his fiction seems to have been genuinely inspired, and thus , who knows, could be coming from something actually REAL, in some time or space. Skyrim was always meant to be a money spinner, and some college ingrates who are still trying to grow a full beard and lives with their parents, were tasked with making 'stuff'. So they threw some 'stuff' together, most which has been heavily plagiarised, and here we all are trying to figure out the minutia of said 20 year olds scramblings in between his fish fingers and chips, and going out with his friends. Need I say more?

Suprised you didn't mention another detail from The Pale Lady quest. Once the bandit chief dies after telling you about the kahjiit and his sword, a whisp spawn right after that over his body and goes towards the Pale Lady.

Perhaps Whips Mothers are normally just a type of ghost who rises from the dead in search of revenge, but the ones in Skyrim are Snow Elves who tuned themselves into Whisp Mothers deliberately. This would explain why they look diffrent, since the Snow Elf sorceresses knew how to preserve their mortal appearance, while other Whisp Mothers become warped and monstrous.

I like that idea because in ESO it takes place before TES Skyrim game so its only natural to have evolved magic practices such as that.

Wispmothers being tied to Vaermina is interesting. She seems to have a connection with undeath already through the vampires. And if wispmothers can haunt a mortal's dreams...

There's a whispmother in high isle that controls the green whisps. She is considered a spirit by the locals, whether it's a nature spirit, or ghostly spirit I can't say, perhaps both.

I remember there was side quests in black marsh, about a elf whose wife turned into wisp mother after death because of her pact she made, that potentially had to do with something with hist. I'm not sure why no one ever discovered or talked about it

Been watching these types of videos for over a decade now and still baffled about the amount of story and lore I've still yet to come across for a single game

I always assumed Wispmothers were the spirits of Snow Elves who had died horribly and in bondage, perhaps a manifestation of their hatred toward their enslavers. Windhelm was built by Snow Elf slaves and likely other Nord settlements used them as forced labor. And they were infamously enslaved by the Dwemer, explaining why they can be found near Dwemer ruins.

i think the wispmothers in eso are probably a result of retconning, but unless and until they are absolutely confirmed to be the same entities as skyrim's wispmothers, i'm electing to ignore that and say they're different things given the same name. it's just too frustrating otherwise, from a writing standpoint especially.

I think that after the near 11 years I've been playing Skyrim, no creature in the game still intrigues me more than wispmothers. Whenever I can calm one down, I like to take a bit of time just to look at them and observe them.

It could be that the wisp mothers we see in Skyrim (snow elves cursed by dwemer or whatever) are the true ones. And later over time female necromancers that turned themselves into litches also became known as wisp mothers and may use similar wisp powers, but not the same. I still never thought the Skyrim wisp mothers were entirely undead in a traditional sense. I always believed they were trapped in an ethereal immortal state, neither dead nor alive, but also not a product of necromancy.

Glad you pointed out that the ESO variant may be seen as a thoughtless retcon for some, because it definitely does seem like so. They just look like a generic zombie enemy... Quite boring, imo.

Since eso takes place like 1000 years before skyrim, I think skyrims wisp mothers are an evolution of eso wisp mothers living in the kold weather of skyrim

The ESO Wispmptjer boss that uses that dialouge not to free her and you don't know what she has done is referring to the Direnni Necromancer that was locked away. Its kind of implied she became a wispmother to make sure the necromancer stayed bound to her corpse.

What a timely video. I just had a completely epic running battle with a wispmother and the many shades she spawned from the icy slopes above Helgen to the winding paths of Riverwood. My low level lizardman was so outclassed all he could do was fire a few arrows then turn and run for his life until he could heal and regroup. A kindly dragon appeared and joined the fray, vaporizing any number of shades with his scalding voice, but eventually got distracted by tastier morsels and left the battle. The Riverwood Trader prospered for a time on the trade of soul gems filled with the souls of the wispmother's many shades. Mr. Lizard at last harried the wispmother back to Helgen and was lining up the killing shot from the cover of a ruined house when an ice spike pierced his scaly heart(s) and drove the green blood from his body. Here ends the tale of Runs-from-Shades.

Are you guys going to do a video on high isle? I think the dlc is saying that the Arthurian and chivalric culture of the britons actually comes from their Mer side and is what separates the Direnni high elves from the Altmer, and the Ayleid's cultures. They're also seems to be no native Daedric worship on the islands. The ascended knights are pretty cool too, they kind of feel like both the thalmor and the stormcloaks put together, the self-righteousness of their right to rule is mixed well with their need to get non-native governments off their island. I think it really expanded on the Bretons and made them feel more unique then came off as before.

FudgeMuppet was probably grateful while reading this script that he doesn't have a lisp speech impediment.

Excellent vid as always. Would love to see a series on the best lore-friendly ways to kill various creatures. How would you fight Draugr for example? True they are weak to fire/light spells but would it make more sense to use blunt weapons since they are relatively dry? Also they wear Ancient Nord Armor which does leave some flesh exposed. And would a particular material weapon be necessary to fight them? Maybe you really would need silver, quicksilver, moonstone or malachite to kill them. Maybe that’s why Nordic gear is based in quicksilver and has ebony in it?

In order to make the ESO lore connect with Skyrim lore, I would say that Skyrim's Wisp Mothers are distinct from the more general Wisp Mothers found elsewhere in Tamriel - probably because of Snow Elf magic or possibly because of the Dwemer specifically. Perhaps in the Dwemer's experiments with the Snow Elves, they created the Skyrim Wisp Mothers from some of the Snow Elves and that's why they have their specific elemental abilities. I know the idea that Wisp Mothers were created by the Dwemer is an idea that's bouncing around in some corners.

Wispmothers are pretty cool enemies. Encounters with them are pretty cool because of how rare they are. I can only think of two instances where I actually got to see them in game

Wispmothers are very interesting. I think they might have been to the snow elves as hagravens are to the forsworn (I think it's the forsworn that have hagraven matriarchs right?) Maybe this form is from after their passing? Or this is their original transformation to matriarch, and are similar to liches

This is just a suspicion, but I'm convinced that the Eye of Magnus has something to do with the Wisp Mothers. I firmly believe that they are similar in nature to the Augur of Dunlain, in that they exist in this non-corporeal, transcendental state, neither dead nor alive. The wisps, meanwhile, are akin to the magical anomalies triggered by Ancano's attempts to activate the Eye. What I go back and forth on is whether the Wisp Mothers harnessed the power of the Eye deliberately to gain immortality, or whether they were turned against their will, by accident or by someone/something else. Either way, it would definitely explain why the snow elves were so afraid of the Eye of Magnus falling into the hands of the Nords that they attacked Winterhold and triggered the war that ultimately led to their nigh extinction. The Wisp Mothers found in dwarven ruins may have been summoned by the enslaved snow elves when they fought back against their captors, or perhaps even the falmer in their current form who were able to sense some sort of connection to those ethereal entities. Or perhaps it was the other way around, and the Wisp Mothers sought out what was left of their former race. There is also the possibility that the dwemer were interested in the process of becoming a Wisp Mother because they, too, wanted to ascend their corporeal form. This may be the reason they ensnared the snow elves in the first place. They weren't looking for slaves, they were looking for knowledge - or perhaps just trying to figure out what about the physiology of female snow elves made them so uniquely suited to Wisp-ification (it would be quite ironic if the toxic fungus the dwemer fed to their captives was ultimately what removed those traits and made experimentation impossible). Just my two septims.

From what i theorize, the two versions are very similar but different; the ones in skyrim, if we consider them as Snow Elves, they clearly knew dark magic.. any character with the determination and a terrible story could do the same. The ones in SummerSet could be another kind of witches holding a grudge from their past lives. Even if they share similar magic I think it would be a waste to throw out the amazing details and lore from the original version.

The Wispmothers are the spirits of the old Ehlnofey that didn't become the Earthbones or the Mer. This is why they are all across Tamriel instead of just Skyrim. The Pale Lady and other Skyrim wispmothers show kinship to the persecuted falmer likely due to their common ancestry.

It should also be noted (Sorry I am only 8:22 min in but I felt that just in case it is not mentioned I might as well say it. Wispmothers can be found in two important locations that would make sense if you are going off them being snow elves one being at a ruin not to far from markarth (think it is near kynegrove) and the other being in black reach for which if they are dead snow elves it would make sense for them to be in these locations given the history with the dwemer. It should also be mentioned a lot of them can also be found around nord sites which also lines up with the nords being the reason for their situation with the dwemer. Oddly enough I am wondering if ice wraths could also have a similar connection given they can also be found in other similar locations such as in the forgotten veil and various nord sites. It could be said that they unlike the wispmothers could not retain or gain a humanoid shape so they settled for this one. I also must mention that the wispmothers from elder scrolls online could have a similar problem that the wisps do with only being called that due to their properties and not actually because they are the same thing. Wisp look like the other wisp so they are called that while wispmothers could simply be a name for a womanly ghostly figure with wisp surrounding her but the two could be completely different beings who just so happen to have similar traits.

I think they are all lichs of a sort. The ones in Skyrim from snow elves. The one in the rest of tamriel from various other races. The difference could be explained from the snow elves affinity for cold and them most likely being well versed in ice magic before they became lichs. Though I highly doubt the meant for that in TES online.

With the Wispmothers affinity for ice and frost magics - is there a possibility that the Wisp’s cores could be made of Stalhrim?

I like the idea they were snow elves, I would have liked to think they were part of the dwarves experimentation producing different results

Considering the limited scope of each individual's field of study, I find it more likely that multiple researchers are correct yet each lacking part of the answer. My personal theory is that wispmotherhood would be best described as an 'elemental imprint', a necromantic echo powered by elemental forces - a fairly good example of what appeared to be more open-ended and powerful magic of bygone days, compared to the more focused and inherently more limited schools of magic understood now. It would explain how there's canonical examples of wispmothers 'respawning', their shade abilities, the remnants of sophonce in legends, even potentially the behaviour of their 'children' as wisps - traces of their echoes wending through paths the wispmother remembers. This blending could also imply that their creation is at least a two-fold process: the emotional/necromantic imprint of betrayal and death, as well as the magical power which might under different circumstances allow for other forms of lichdom. I think it's wrong to limit oneself to modern understandings of the divisions of magic, or even to divide magic beyond what is necessary to convey effects. The Elder Scrolls is pretty clear in that magics undefined by conventional practice trend both toward being more powerful and toward combining elements of understood magic with other things - such as with wispmothers making sense as a blending of alteration, necromancy, evocation, and an 'other' which makes it possible. It's a close analogy to trying to call an IRL concept like Yuki-onna a mere ghost, demon, or witch: you're mistranslating by trying to fit a multifaceted phenomenon/entity into prefabricated boxes.

Here's an idea. The wisps lead you to the Wisp Mother and only when the Wisp Mother attacks do the companion Wisps attack. What if they are the souls of fallen Snow Elf women who were strong in magic that became ghosts and couldnt move on. After being forced to live in undeath for untold years they end up giving up or lose their positive emotions of love, protection, and happiness and thats what the wisps are, fragments of a being whos not whole splintered into a different existence to cope with the inability to move on. This would line up with the weakening as wisps are destroyed as well. Just a thought.

I quite like the idea that Wispmothers are some form of Snow Elf/Falmer spirit. It definitely makes sense based on their appearance, use of frost magic & the locations you can find them. They also remind me of Wraiths, much like the ones in Oblivion, only with a feminine appearance. It would be interesting if they were like the Wraiths in The Witcher series, women who've been wronged before they died only to return as derranged spirits, bent on revenge. The first Wispmother I came across during my time in Skyrim, was the one in Labyrinthian during the Staff of Magnus questline. If I'm remembering correctly, it appears in an underground graveyard of sorts which further supports the ghostly vibes they give off. I was genuinely terrified the first time I saw it, it almost felt like something from a horror game had seeped it's way into Skyrim. It was definitely a memorable experience. From the creepy sounds they make, to their ethereal visage, they are definitely one of my favourite Skyrim entities. It also helps that they are so rare. Like most on here, I play Skyrim a lot, even after 11 years of playing & the last time I saw one was about 2 - 3 months ago. Strangely it was just West of Helgen battling with a bandit. I decided to let them duke it out & went on my merry way.

Wispmother? Yuki-Onna. To me, it's kinda lame that they always wanna attack ya; I find the areas they inhabit rather calming, and hearing the wisps swooshing about, is perfect for meditation. I'm glad that there are mods that exist that allow one to become allies with them (Realm of Lorkhan - Warlock Faction I think), because Youkai are cool, okay?

They were not poisoned. They were affected by the same blindness that affects readers of the Elder Scrolls themselves. Lots of hints point in this direction for one the proximity of the center for Dwemer scroll research closest to the highest concentration of Falmer.

The simplest explanation: -they look exactly like wraiths in every other media -they have leftovers OF CLOTHING, something an elemental being wouldn't have -is ethereal (decays to a bit of dust) -wisps look like they are 'wandering souls'. Some wraiths control the souls of others.

Undeath in the Elder Scrolls universe isn't necessarily something set in stone and there are multiple ways to achieve it, so there might be forms of lichdom which are similar but different, perhaps the Wisp Mothers in Elder Scrolls online simply differ from the Skyrim ones due to being an imperfect form of undeath which would normally be exclusive to Snow Elves.

I think the two entities are different. ESO wisp mothers remind me more of a banshee, kind of like the banshees in fable.

Makes sense a wisp mother is undead, I killed one fast using a crossbow and steel bolts which is used on vampires as well.

The ones in Skyrim can be seen as having existed for far longer than the ones in ESO. It could be that with time, they have lost their ability to speak as they have become more monster than mer as the curse that turned them into undead slowly eats away at them until nothing of their original form will be left.

I always thought it was some sort of ethereal remain of ancient necromancers that uses elemental magic not unsimilar to vampire powers. Might even draw power from the daedric planes.

The one deep in the bowels of the Labyrinthian still baffles me.

Ghost of Kjenstag A ghost will appear between the times of 8:00 pm and 4:00 am, and will run a short distance away to a small tomb being robbed by a pair of bandits. The tomb contains a dead draugr, a piece of leveled jewelry, an iron shield, and a weak leveled enchanted weapon.

I know one thing about that tumbnail. She goes in the elemental harem with the flame atronach and the spriggan.
