No one else here…

So, today we are out and about walking once more in the world famous Cotswold village of Bibury which is located in Gloucestershire, England. The village is located 6 1/2 miles (10.5 km) northeast of Cirencester.
Bibury is arguable one the most iconic tourist destinations in the Cotswolds and receives many-many thousands of visitors every year from all over the globe. The one attraction that really makes Bibury stand out is the world famous Arlington Row, which is a row of cottages originally built in 1380 as a monastic wool store and then converted in the 17th century to weavers cottages. Today, Arlington Row is managed and owned by the National Trust.
Besides Arlington Row, Bibury has other attractions including the Trout Farm.
Why such a bold title for this video? Well, simply because this morning walk is arguably a one in a million due to the very fact that for the entire duration not a single vehicle passed through the village (as far as I could tell) and also not one other person was encountered along the way, this is an incredible rarity in Bibury! Just a couple of hours after filming, coaches full of tourists were flocking into the village and it was crazy busy! Also the wildlife seemed to be the loudest I have ever heard in Bibury. Sadly though, the tranquillity was slightly marred by the man-made noise of an airliner in the distance, which is heard in the last 5 minutes or so of the walk.
There is just one hidden OAAW logo within this video!
Thanks for walking with me.

You were right. It was a one in a million video. One of the things I love about your videos, you go out early in the morning before most people are awake, so the only sounds are those of nature. It's so easy for me to imagine another period long ago, and these villages appear to grow up from the forest, as if they are a part of them.

Well, another walk has just joined the “favorites” list! Your description of Bilbury as “England’s prettiest village” was very accurate- though judging from previous walks you have shown us, there are many other contenders for that honor. I loved the area by the stream, near the opening- with the bench. I would love to be sitting on that bench reading, or quietly making music on some instrument- just enjoying the peaceful ambiance. I continue to stand in awe of the sheer age of some of these buildings (so well preserved!), like the Arlington Row you described. What a sense of the past one must feel when standing there and viewing these structures! (“Old” over here is approx. 200 years, give or take a few decades….not even close to what is old in the UK). Thank you for including this kind of information in your description, that viewers might fully appreciate the history they are seeing. As always, the lovely pathways and lush greenery all around were a delight to see. The cat running along the pathway and slipping through the bars of the gate at the 5 minute mark might not have been significant to anyone else, but it brought me a smile- as I was instantly reminded of one of my dad’s stories of a little cat he encountered and spent time with when he was stationed in England during WWII! The video cat even looked like the cat of yesteryear, as I have a truly sweet photo of my dad as a young GI, smiling and holding the English kitty. :) Thank you for sharing this wonderful walk with us- and I am so glad that you fit this all in before the hordes of tourists arrived. Great timing! :)

Hi Janet. It is really good to hear from you today. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Bibury definitely has strong competition when it comes to having the honor of being named England's prettiest village, especially as there are so many beautiful villages all over the UK but locally, locations like Snowshill, Stanton, Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe to name but just a few all have very individual merits and unique identities and it could be argued that they are also contenders for the title :). The photo you have of your dad & his little feline friend sounds beautiful. Photographs and video are the nearest we have to time machines, a window to the past. It never ceases to amaze me how a walk so far away from one's own location can spark or trigger so many precious memories and emotions. It is also amazing to think that hundreds of years from now someone could be reading through our comments from the what will then be the vintage year of 2024, If so...Hello to you from us! All the best to you, OAAW

@@OutandaboutWalking Even the names of these towns sound poetic and pretty! Yes, it’s a wonderful photo of my dad….wish that I could send it along with my comment. The American GIs informally adopted a stray cat that hung around the air base- undoubtedly attracted by the smell of food cooking in the mess hall. Appropriately enough, they named him “K.P.”, standing for “kitchen patrol” (the kitchen duties that the soldiers were scheduled to assist with). The cat definitely brought a little feeling of home to these men who had an entire ocean between them and their families, friends, and pets. When the troops were scheduled to move on to France, they wanted to take K.P. with them, and even built a little carrier for him- but on moving day he never showed up. Clearly he wasn’t about to renounce his British citizenship- and good for him, as it’s admirable to be loyal to one’s own country- even if you happen to be a cat! : ) Have a great week!

I love when you were walking along the footpath you came upon that random door in the wall. It reminded me of that passage from Evelyn Waugh’s “Brideshead Revisited”: “But I was in search of love in those days, and I went full of curiosity and the faint, unrecognized apprehension that here, at last, I should find that low door in the wall, which others, I knew, had found before me, which opened on an enclosed and enchanted garden, which was somewhere, not overlooked by any window, in the heart of that grey city”.

It was 92-degrees F (33-degrees C) and high humidity out when I was watching this in my living room. And I thought how wonderful it would be to walk a bit in the cool water of the river and then sit on the bench under the tree (early on in your video) … That corner with all the chairs out! Heaven for the day!! I hope you are well and enjoying your summer!👏🏻

Hi Cheryl. It is really good to hear from you. I hope all is well. When do the temperatures in your area peak? Is it around August. If so, I dread to think how hot it could get! Summer here seems to be a bit of a washout as it has been raining a lot lately. Bibury is often referred to as “the most beautiful village in England”, it is definitely a contender worthy of that title. There are indeed some nicely situated benches and I do recall just how much you enjoy a nice bench with a view. All the best to you. OAAW

@@OutandaboutWalking Hey OAAW~ I don't envy much, but I envy you and your walks around the English countryside. I am an Anglophile at heart.... (I have been to England, mostly London, twice; both times I experienced no rain whatsoever. None. Weird, huh?) Yes, my love of benches dates back to the beginning of my career. My first "adult" job was across from both the Boston Common and the Boston Public Garden in Boston. As often as I could, I went to one or the other, usually the Public Garden. I'd loved it since I was a child and my grandmother used to take us every summer to ride on the historic Swan Boats. It was where my addiction to bench-hopping started. Benches under trees in a gorgeous setting.... I have absolutely no idea when our temps will peak. We have had a few days over 100-degrees F. The last four years, give or take, here in the US Northeast have been so out-of-the-norm that I have no idea what the heck is going on. We have had little snow but much rain for several years. The weather we've been having in the summer these last few years is hotter and much more humid. Weather forecasters are claiming it will break Wednesday of this week, and that forecast seems to be holding now for a week. We'll see. I am appreciative that our weather isn't as bad as some people's. Here's to dryer, calmer, sunnier, more comfortable days....
