About the music, they said in their community updates that it will be very theme park-ish. So we've gotten the child-like chants, a pirate themed(my fave so far) and one in a western style. They teased a spooky area so it will probably be similar to the final boss of Patapon1. I wouldn't be surprised if more themes are gonna be added later on

Yep. Here's still hoping there'd be much more variation in the music. And if it comes down to it, if it is as you've said, the spooky area theme would probably be my fav considering the theme of Patapon 1 final boss.

I know most people will inevitably constantly joke about Ratatan being Patapon 4, but I think the team is using the fact that Sony wouldn't let them make it as an opportunity to do some experimental things rather distinct from the Patapon series. The fact that you play as the hero characters with rhythmless, free movement, but you command smaller minions with the rhythm the hero characters provide makes it feel a lot closer to a game like Pikmin. On top of that, the Fortrun mechanic seems like it'll shake-up gameplay pretty significantly from what they've stated. I'm not sure I'd even call it "the Patapon 3 we never got" because the changes just feel so much more radical than what I'd imagine their attempts at these ideas would have been in a Patapon 4. Plus, battling these dreadful monstrosities in alien-feeling environments all within such a unique minimalist style is an essential factor to what makes Patapon so distinctively memorable, but nevertheless I'm glad that Ratatan is trying its own thing. Patapon was its own set of games within that style, and here's an opportunity to try something different with more detail, colors, layers, depth, etc. The humanoid designs, the syllables Rata & Tan using the same vowels, -the milk- ; I get why people hang onto the brilliance of Patapon, but I think these are all intriguing directions that have the potential to be good in a new way (and perhaps refreshing compared to a Patapon 4 that would follow a less experimental formula), and furthermore will craft for Ratatan an identity of its own.

Incredible analysis! I guess I was holding onto nostalgia a lot. I was joking a lot though, so don't take everything I say at face value. I'd expect they've been cooking a LOT for how long it's been since we got a game of this genre. It's bound to carry many ideas which tbh I think most of us will welcome with enthusiasm. I agree on the musical style not being 100% for me, but I think it's important to remember that it took 3 games to get the heavy metal entry in Patapon. 1 was overwhelmingly childish in its music, only really dipping into the dark for the final battle. I think it's fair to say that Ratatan is attempting to go back to the series roots with something closer to Patapon 1's whimsical and childish charm. My hope is that Ratatan delivers some decent variety with the rest of its soundtrack, but I'm choosing not to be upset if we don't get any of P3's level of harder, rock-oriented music.

I agree Ratatan does feel closer to 1 than anything else. But, if it's anything with what's been shown for now, there will be lots of different areas which some could have different themes going around (like that western area for example). Keeping my fingers crossed but my hopes are still extremely high

Listen to a couple of soundtracks from Ratatan (the developers themselves posted them on the open network), you get the feeling that the music, although it tries to be like the first Patapons, but it feels like it is worse and too childish...

Lol, since the beginning I said that Ratatan music sounds more like Locoroco than Patapon (Like a mix of both soundtracks). And that's good, but I have to agree that personally I'm not a big fan of it by now. Patapon may have fun and silly music, but Ratatan sounds straight up too childish for me (and I understand and respect it a lot, because the audience that Kotani has been targeting with these games are kids, and also I know that he works as a teacher if I remember correctly). But it's fine, I think it's just a matter of giving it an opportunity once the game/soundtrack is released, the devs already said that there'll be more music like Patapon 3, with Metal and else. Plus LocoRoco had great tracks too. Aside from that. People "fear" the focus of Ratatan in Multiplayer because Patapon 3 has a LOT of content locked behind multiplayer, thing that also kinda ruined part of Patapon 3 single mode gameplay wise (And I recognize this even as a fan of Pata 3 who never touchs multi). There's also a lot people who just prefer single player experiences (me). But I think it will be fine as long as they offer a solid single player experience. And the more the years go by & the more games I play, the more I think that Patapon is an once in a lifetime game. I'll say It's even more than its own genre. Ratatan hype is real notheless!

Ratatan sweep!!! or maybe we've just been depraved of the genre for too long that we dont really mind at all 🤔 I would think the reason Patapon 3's experience was discounted by the multiplayer was mostly because the lack of resources & limitations of the console. Iirc they said they need to reduce the amount of army you can control because the PSP wasn't strong enough, but they still want to introduce the uberhero. So they kinda need to revamp the whole experience into one that has multiplayer capabilities with uberheroes, thus leaving the single player experience to dust. Considering a decade has passed and they now have more resources and it will be released in new gen devices, Ratatan should rectify the fault of Patapon 3 I think. Making it fun in multiplayer but also very viable playing solo.

You are pretty much jamming to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or something, but as a tribalistic beat, with the singing and chanting of children. The formula has always been childish, why are people like you, just now having gripes about it?

And it's not "just now", neither it's just nostalgia, LocoRoco existed before Patapon, played it first, and till this day I not fan of its soundtrack (Similar style and same composer btw). What I see is that people doesn't want to understand that Ratatan and Patapon styles aren't the same. Yeah, it's similar, but very different for each other at the same time. And I just prefer the more compressed and high pitched chants of the Patapons over the more natural and realistic child chants of Ratatan. (P.D: Maybe I change my opinion once the whole OST is released, or maybe not)

the idea of mixing rhythm game with rpg, let alone in the way patapon did it, is just truly unique. the theatrhythm final fantasy games only took that idea at a surface level.

Indeed! Patapon's RPG and Rhythm design are very intermingled with each other, one has to wonder how they came up with that. One part of the problem I believe is the idea of 'what an (insert genre) should be' which limits creativity. RPG has to be like this, rhythm has to be like that, and so on.

Very solid video, I enjoyed watching it quite a bit.

Great video! I saw you wrote in your KZread description that you make videos to improve your English; and I must commend you for your efforts both in general and for this reason c: I disagree on your "Patapon is not a rhythm game" take though (who knew lol). There are definitely rhythm games based on call and response rather than quick button inputs, like Rhythm Heaven. I even feel like Osu! is less of a rhythm-based game than Patapon, because where you click on the screen matters way more than whether you can keep to a beat. Another point is that your drawing analogy inadvertently shows that Patapon's rhythm elements are actually quite important: artists will tell you that a drawing being made on paper, on canvas or digitally is an important distinction regardless of whether that drawing is realistic or chibi or abstract. If Patapon isn't a rhythm game, it's at least rhythm-based; and in a much more prevalent way than something like Sekiro.

Ratatan is made by the same devs I am pretty sure, and I think its going to be great I hope. There are three patapon games its not bad that they don't want to make another patapon. Also games have multiple tags. This game revolves around rhythm. All the gameplay is rhythm and the rest is just animations. This is a rhythm strategy game. Your opinion is yours and that is alright.

I think its not bad, even for new players to see the context or story of its devs. Personally even when trying a new series i try to know who made it and their previous work, regardless of wheter i like or not the game. On one hand... yeah! New game of the Pata devs. On the other hand, they also made Patapon 3 which not only sold terrible but also was very divisive, and definitely they dont bring me much hope when they said they would focus on the online mode. History seems to repeat again. Hope im wrong, because i want Ratatan to be a true masterpiece or at the very least a game that doesnt have to envy to the best Japan Studio made, but i would personally go with caution.

The only thing that I’m negative about is the art style. It was more clear in Patapon and very stylistic. Looks a bit more generic and also more cluttered here.

@@kanakanaka Correct. You can tell in heartbeat where the hitbox starts and ends. Enemies and allies have easily indentified characteristics that tell you what they can do and what they are weak to. How the physics interact and what the right distance is for your strategy. The art of patapon was as perfect for its strategy as the distinctiveness between each commands purpose.
