@mnq577 maybe yes maybe no. In the US the great depression caused many who were raised during that era to be extremely frugal the rest of their lives. I have a grandma who lived during the great depression and she acted as if she had no money the rest of her life even after she did have money.

Being frugal is being rational because you don't need to spend money on unnecessary things. It's different from being cheap. If someone needs to go shopping all the time, that's an unnecessary addiction that needs to be cured.

China and the USA are looking at the decrease of consumption by millenials and genz badly nowadays. A couple of months ago there was news from USa that MZ gen are not eating out and the whole tone of the news is gaslighting the generation for not consuming. However, the MZ gen are having a hard time affording basic needs at the moment due to hyperinflation and stagnating wages. The older generations did tell us to save but whenever the economy slumps, we are told to spend to keep things going.

But . . . But . . . But . . . the most important thing in the universe is to be *COOL:* you have to act cool, talk cool, walk cool, exude coolness. However, in order to really _be_ cool, you have to keep up with the Joneses. What this means is having a cool sports car or luxury car. In that manner, everyone will admire and respect you, be your friend - and all the women will love you. BUT, if you do NOT have a sleek, new cool car, people will look down upon you as childish, a nerd, a wimp, a loser, failure, a nobody (and no one will be your friend or want to marry you).

I agree that here, at least in the US where I live, spending is crazy as ever, it's like ingrained into our culture. Seeing fellow students (I'm 15) shopping right after school or even during class is quite common. But from what I've seen in Chinese media, their day to day life is very very different from us in that it's mostly studying, work, and saving (... besides the crazy social media beauty standards 💀). If anything, I'm surprised that Chinese Gen Z is not spending _more_ overall than Gen Z in Europe & NA.

When I was young, I worked in a lavish "American" company as a low level employee where the company would subsidized our lunch for RM4 / day, I manage to eat only RM1 per day (that's 10 years ago), making my monthly expense for lunch only RM30+ (excluding weekends), and most higher ups with higher pay wouldn't even bother eating at the canteen, so they'd throw me a bone and gave me their tags (that's how we get our discounts) to me so I can have some extra food in a container for dinner, I'd pay the balance after using their tags! I wouldn't say I was frugal but it made me find ways to survive back then! The company subsidized car petrol for people living in a different state as they needed their expertise, those friends just "live" in their cars after work, the company allows employees to stay back till 11pm for work, they'd just have a blast in their cubicles and sleep in their cars. For showers, our company had a gym on site, so they could just go to the gym shower and change into something comfortable.

I once ate cheese, egg, tomato, bread every day for a month, LOL~ go to a wholeseller and get in bulk, if you calculate precisely it'll get you a good deal but sometimes Lotus has cheaper deals!~ Eggs are definitely top of my list for easy prepare and nutritious! learn to cook tamago egg (Japanese square shaped egg) with some simple fillings on the first day of the week! you can cut it up into sandwich size portions! and just put it between breads for a meal add sliced tomato, cucumber, mayo spread! Get "Jumbo" eggs which will cost you around RM0.60 / egg but it'll make up for the difference as it has 2 yolks. If you want to save more! get a second hand "bread-maker" from carousell! SUPER EASY TO USE! throw in flour and it'll bake you bread for only RM1.00 / loaf! my GAWD I can go on and on! LOL!

" Nice to have " means a new phone , clothes other blings that would be nice to have now but its purchase can be pushed to a future date . And another thing is 30-20-50 approach. 30% for savings+investing, 20% for emergency liquid fund that can be accessed quickly in 30-50 mins & 50% includes monthly bills including new clothes , Phone , housing food entertainment etc

The "30-20-50 approach" is a luxury for most young people today. Even for a lot of middle-aged people with high salaries but also high costs to support their family. I'm sure many people would love to be able to spend "only" 50% of their income on necessities. But that goal is a fantasy for most people. Probably over a billion people in the world today live paycheck-to-paycheck. And that's not by choice. Nobody likes the feeling of constant financial anxiety. They're stuck in that situation because they can't substantially reduce their living costs (it's mostly out of their control) and there's no simple way to earn a lot more (without putting their health in danger--there have been cases in recent years of people literally dropping dead due to extreme overwork). For people in particularly expensive areas, just rent + food will use up nearly all of their pay. There's no such thing as disposable income, let along saving or investing.

Even with a university education, good job, great salary and benefits, all car and house debts paid up, I have never, and will never buy luxury goods. I do not have a high-end phone, TV, car, etc although I can afford to buy them. The only time when we eat out is for a birthday, we do all the cooking and cleaning ourselves. some shoes, for example, can be low price yet have good design. There is no need for an expensive Nike shoe. The range of products bought by young Gen Z is much wider (smartphones, sightseeing, health products, gym, socialising in sports bar ...), so the smart Gen Z look for value for money since many are still studying or at the beginning of their professional career.

There's so many different views & opinions presented in the comments section on why Gen Z / the millennials are spending less or rather, they are not buying branded / luxury brands & products compared to the generations before. Are they truly frugal and wise in their spending, spending on what they need , on things that have good price performance? or are they not buying the luxury brands products because they could not afford it? Well, we will never know which is true , only time will tell. However, I believe that all humans have wants & needs. With all the promotions, advertisement, marketing done to promote a brand or product, and to create the want or need for the product, the young generation (Gen Z) will ultimately spend their money on branded / luxury products when they grow older, when they have high income /more money. It will probably start from buying something small such as a branded lipstick or sunglasses to shoes, bags, accessories and clothing. Moreover, there are Gen Z from high income or rich families. The youths from this echelon of society will surely spend their money on branded / luxury goods.

Or going off sales figures from the company selling luxury goods. They are buying just as much of not more, but not saying they are. Isn't that more likely. Trust the sales figures not what people say in videos. Maybe she is frugal but going by demographics she is not average.

Why did you frame this as a China specific scenario? It's not just China. And I think it's more than just not having a lot of money right now. I think that because we didn't grow up being wasteful, we won't be very wasteful even if we do start to receive a higher income. If you want us to spend on brands and large luxuries, I think we would have to come into a very large amount of money all at once. Even then, a lot of that money will go to paying off debts, going to school, starting a business, giving to charity and friends and family, and retirement, and other investments.

Sin is an action that is not good and done or thought out of bad intentions. We all lie, trick others, and are prideful/selfish sometimes. God (Jesus Christ) came down in the form as an human and died for our sins. He resurrected from death thus we can also defeat death 💀 if anyone of us accept Him as Savior for our sins. We cannot save ourselves from sin no matter how many good deeds we do. Everyday we sin. Christians do too. But if you are a Christian ✝️, you will go to heaven when God plays back your whole life to you. But if you die without being a Christian ✝️, then you will suffer forever 💔 without being in heaven. God doesn't judge you based on worldly success nor physical attraction. Jesus Christ loves ❤️ you and values your character. If u end up being poor, He still won't abandon you. You can pray 🙏 to reach out to Him, and you'll see what He will do for you and others. Sometimes He will see if you will trust His will which is not always the same as your will nor desire. I’m still living at home due to the lack of housing available in my area (I have a great job, don’t want to leave it, but it’s in an area with no housing and it’s extremely competitive when something new appears) After the bills I pay to my parents, which is discounted because I’m their child and they insist I only pay so much, I pretty much only spend £100 the very maximum on myself a month. I think the only exception is at Christmas and the last 2 months because of emergency matters beyond my control. Aside from the bumpy last 2 months, my savings have never looked better. My phone is nearly 3 years old and has zero storage left, so I’m probably looking to replace that next, but I’m riding it out as long as possible as I don’t want to give into mindless consumerism. I don’t need the latest clothes, the latest games or the latest gadgets. What I have now is more than sustainable enough for me.

However, after the pandemic, there’s very little optimism now as many youths discover that job opportunities have been lesser and the pay wasn’t as satisfactory as previous years. It sure changes their mindset towards a more rational and frugal lifestyle. 😂

I am a grad student in the US from Indonesia, basically I made around $1000 from GA stipend per month and need to spend $375 for housing, $250 for health insurance, $75 for food and utilities. And sending $120 for my family and about $30 for charity in a month. So in total about $900. Made food and coffee myself and use campus facilities for entertainment. Lucky enough to be able to make saving from penny and additional income from other awards and scholarship (which is more significant if I use it back in my country). These are completely two different perspectives. The interviewed professional is interpreting the current economic situation's impact on young people in this era from a socio-economic standpoint, as slow economic growth has limited the incomes of the younger generation. On the other hand, the interviewed young person is expressing her consumer logic. However, it's challenging to determine whether her consumer logic is shaped by the constraints of the current economic slowdown or if it truly reflects her genuine values regarding consumption. Especially since her actual monthly expenditures exceed what she can afford. From this perspective, it's hard to argue that she is making rational consumption choices.

The Lord Jesus Christ became the Savior of sinners (all humans) by coming down from Heaven & dying on the 🪵 wooden cross for our sins. God raised Him from the dead, and Jesus is now a living Savior with God in heaven. But don't lose hope. Anyone can be saved from their sins and from going to hell in two easy, peasy steps: 1. Realize that you are a sinner who CAN'T SAVE YOURSELF from going to the lake of fire (forever) 🔥 based on your good deeds, your own philosophy, and other religions. 2. Realize that you need to believe in your heart ❤️ that ONLY Jesus Christ died for your sins. If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart ❤️ that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart ❤️ man believe unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Congratulations! 🎊 👏 After this life, you're on your way to heaven forever! ⬆️💯🥳
