This has been a huge issue in the past ten years, is that we got so desensitized to the term "fascist" because it is something *so* evil, *so* over-the-top that its proponents are practically cartoon villains. And it's very difficult to get people to take you seriously when you're saying "hey, this person follows cartoon villain ideology," which ironically actually makes it more difficult to fight real fascism. And the conflation of fascism and authoritarianism also make it difficult, too. I'd recommend the Alt-Right Playbook series of video essays (yes, yes, leftists recommending video essays, I know xD) if you're interested in better understanding the definition and tactics of fascism, where it comes from, why it always emerges from the conservative party when it does show up, and how our beloved liberal norms, values, and institutions - the very things it evolved to annihilate - are uniquely vulnerable to it.

Many left the country by 1926 and those who didn't either silently rebelled, or ended up creating some of the largest "criminal" syndicates to provide for their families and give them protection from conscription and political attacks. But the general resistance effort died out after several massacres and most anti-fascists leaving the country or going underground to avoid persecution.

People have been taught over the last 40 or so years a distorted history of our country and taught to despise science and think of the government as an enemy like some amorphous entity that is out to do them harm. They've been heavily indoctrinated against facts and evidence that dispute what they've been taught. That makes them susceptible to the cult of personality that Defendant 45 created. This is why it is SO important to teach the less than noble parts of American history in elementary and secondary schools throughout America. It has been too long since book burning and other unsavory parts of our history was prenelent. The folks that witnessed thouse times are not around to talk about it anymore. We are starting to forget what we overcame and therefore are begining to re-live thouse terrible times. The difference is that the dictators were heads of other countries then. Our democracy survived. Q: Will it survive this time around? A: Not if we - you and I - do nothing.

As family who perished at Auschwitz, this is exactly what happened. No one thought it would be them next and kicked the can down the road. Our Great Opa, a successful businessman, didn't think anything would happen to him and his family. They were pillars of Berlin. But with Jewish descent, little by little, their rights and possessions then their lives were taken.
