Did this with strawberries a long time ago with the addition of quarter-inch drip irrigating tubing fished up through the bottom of the tower. Strawberries are perennial where I was living so I could leave them just as they were (plus occasional topping dressing with compost) for about five years before it was time for new plants. Had over 200 strawberry plants growing that way.

@@Montasia1112011 Zone 9. They were fine in the winter because it rarely stayed below freezing. Hot summers though, so rather than paint the buckets, like in the video, I wrapped them in a layer of that reflective foil-bubble wrap insulation, and then a double layer of shade cloth with holes cut in each. The whole set up sat on a partially, high-shaded brick patio. The towers that weren't shaded in the afternoon sun I'd throw a couple of old sheer curtains or old white sheets over on the hottest days. Some leaf edges got a little crispy but neither the plants nor fruit suffered much. It was really gourmet compost and soil I'd used and they got a weekly spray of worm casting tea, plus slow-release fertilizer during the season. I had access to A LOT of oak leaves and cedar needles - strawberries are acid-lovers. I placed (not fastened) bucket lids on the top to help retain moisture. Hope you're able to give it a try and it works out for you.

Paint buckets sold in the stores where I live are food grade. They're in the paint department and have a sticker on them saying food grade. And if you flip them over they have numbers in the recycling arrows. When you look those numbers up it will tell you which are food grade.

As long as it's just latex paint the buckets will have a "2" code on the bottom which is food grade. I scrubb them out good of course. The grey buckets have UV Inhibitors in the plastic so they last longer outdoors. Some of the white buckets will get brittle in a couple of years exposure to the sun. Check the dumpsters where they are building new housing for empty paint buckets. You can get half a dozen at a time if you are lucky.

Please don't use a bucket that used to hold chemicals or spray paint things when you will be eating food you grow. Use a food grade bucket or even soda bottles before using other types of buckets. They are not food grade and may contain toxins in the plastic and definitely don't release those chemicals by using a torch on the plastic. That being said, this IS a great idea if you use food grade buckets. You can likely get these buckets free or very cheaply at local grocery stores, bakeries, delis, or restaurants if you ask them to save them for you.

I've tried it with variety of plants, the composting tube in the center is not necessary, it may even be harmful if the compost is not mature when the plants are still small, because composting process sucks up so much oxygen from the soil
You could stabilize these by driving a 48" long piece of rebar down the center hole. You could also raise these by standing the unit on top of an upside down bucket. Of course the rebar would need to be longer. A six foot long piece of 3/8 or 1/2" should work.

@GardenKatt
2 жыл бұрын
If you put it touching the ground than worms will come up through the bottom all on their own. You wont need to purchase any. I have even found worms under things on my patio that are not organic like my grill and bricks. They come out at night looking for food and hide under whatever they can when the sun comes out. Try it. Good luck.
@yeevita

Put on earth’s dirt a covered container with kitchen scraps and holes on the bottom. Possibly cover the scraps with a bit of dirt. Water the scraps. After a day or a few days, there will be worms in your kitchen scraps. Dump it all into your container, or just move the container to where you want worms. They make beautiful soil.

If you put it touching the ground than worms will come up through the bottom all on their own. You wont need to purchase any. I have even found worms under things on my patio that are not organic like my grill and bricks. They come out at night looking for food and hide under whatever they can when the sun comes out. Try it. Good luck.

They make beautiful soil.

what is the bottle that’s suspended over the top of the grow bag plant behind this for?
I have heard that we shouldn't use paint buckets because of chemical contamination from the paint. Is this a problem?
👌
Easy ,economical,
I was told never grow food in anything but food grade buckets with the sign, V and a 2 in middle of the V on bottom of bucket. Why take a chance on non food stuff being leached into your food?
Awesome Idea. Does anyone know if old paint buckets are food safe?

Spinach here is a cool weather plant one planting early spring and one planting in the beginning of fall but I do think you can get heat-tolerant seeds. Just type in heat-tolerant spinach. good luck

2 questions, 1. can this be done with more than strawberries and spinach and can you mix the plants as strawberries in the bottom bucket and spinach in the top one??????

Yes . I think it is possible because this vegetable tower provides enough light and nutrition for the plants on the upper and lower floors

Herbs and this year we are going to try green beans and peas this way
Question The bottle top in the middle of this. Do we put water into it, to keep it watered?
@tomm4073

I think that the bottle top serves to prevent fruit flies and to retain moisture, and the smell. But I'm not sure.
How often would you spray the asprin mixture on tomatoes or potatoes?
Do these need to be food grade containers?
