No Gandhi in fray for first time in 25 years but Amethi voters say it’s a fight still
The high-profile seats of Amethi and Raebareli are set to go to the polls on 20 May. While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has shifted to Raebareli, the party has fielded Kishori Lal Sharma, a Gandhi family loyalist and ex-election manager of Sonia Gandhi, from the from the Congress bastion, which was snatched by the BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019. This time, dynamics in Amethi are different as Irani faces resistance from a section of supporters and Amethi royal Sanjay Sinh is distancing himself from her campaign. While hardcore BJP supporters still back Irani, a section of the party’s voter base seems angry with her. But she is getting support from SP MLAs Rakesh Pratap Singh and Maharaji Prajapati’s families, who are campaigning for her. As Rahul opts out of fray the, Sharma is banking on his 40-year-association while seeking votes. Voters say they will vote on the issues of unemployment, inflation, paper leak, a scrapped IIIT project and the lack of basic facilities. Most say that a Gandhi family member would have catapulted the Congress’ vote share.

It's fire vs ice in Amethi. Gandhis have fielded a long time loyalist kl Sharma from Amethi. He is a grounded worker who looked after the constituency on the behalf of Gandhis. He knows every nook and corner of the constituency,its issues and every worker. The Congress is banking on the family relationship with voters to win the seat. On the other hand, Smriti Irani is the candidate from the BJP. She is an aggressive of the party nationally. She is banking on her government welfare schemes and administrative work to retain the seat she had won by defeating Rahul Gandhi. She has also been spending time among the electorate in Amethi. It will be an interesting electoral contest to watch out for.

KL Sharma is not unknown, he is well known in his constituency. He may not be know to drawing room onlookers.
