Dude this video just saved life! (or at least made my day lol). My problem wasn’t quite the same either. Bike was running great and then all of the sudden it started up and bogged down right away, then wouldn’t start at all. After checking a million things I came across this video and realized that vacuum hose that comes off the pet cock pulled out and was disconnected! Thanks!

I was riding today. I was a mile from my house. My bike just quite. Its never done that before. I pushed it home. Took off the air filter and I didnt have any gas Shooting from the jet. I found your video and check the vac line on the back of the peacock and its was off. Thats you grate video. Saved me a lot of time

Same bike same problem watch the video a little too late already rebuilt the car and also found that the line was dry rotted thanks though that clears it up that that's actually the problem

Had to put the old ignition back on so that meant the tank had to come off. When I put it back together forgot that damn vaccum line, thanks for this video...

Thanks for the video, I had this exact problem on my daughter's 2004 Sporty. We broke the vacuum line pulling the tank and fought starting the bike for a couple of hours. I even pulled the tank again, pulled the petcock off, opened it up, cleaned it and the fuel filter and still no fuel at the carb. $1 at O'Reilly to get a vacuum hose and she fired right up!!!

I believe you have saved me some blood sweat and tears. My old 99 1200 seems to have the same thing. I backed it out of storage, fired it up, rode around my place, shut it off. Washed it,detailed it. Fired it up, idled for about a minute, died. Getting no gas to carb. After watching your video,I'm believing maybe I damaged the deteriorating vaccum line .

I've already rebuilt my carb so this is my next problem area. They used windshield washer line because windshield wipers used to be vacuum operated. Thanks for showing the petcock off the bike so it was easy to see it.

Very nice bike. Mine left me sit on New Years Day. After investigation and a rollback bill, this was my exact problem. It's probably the original hose, it just crumbled in my fingers. I have an anniversary edition too.

I have the 95th anniversary xlh1200s and just replaced my dry rotted gas line, and tried to start it for 45 minutes until I found the little vacuum hose behind the petcock valve 😂

Vacuum line runs to the VOES Vacuum Operated Electric switch < controls timing . then the pet cock . O'Reilly has the 1/8 inch hose and 90 and t you need .

Very Interesting, I have '97 1200 Sportster, yesterday after 100 miles of ride the engine shut down, I was luck y because it happened 1 mile from home i had to push the bike in my garage, so I checked the sparks plugs are ok, today I start the engine but after 1 min it turned off again. I'm going to take off the carb and check the vacuum mine. Thanks for sharing, best regards from Italy

You can change the petcock out to a Pingel petcock, high flow no vacuum needed , does away with all that.

True! One could also reduce a straight line from tank to carb or regulate an electric fuel pump. So many options, but making the factory system work correctly is the goal with this vid😎

If you can spray starter fluid into the airfilter/carb and it fires….it’s a fuel/air issue. If it still doesn’t fire, it’s a spark issue. All that assuming tour compression is legit. Good luck!

yep I was having a bit of rough idle today, went to the gas station no start. Looked behind the carb and seen this hose is off but now I have to take off the air filter and pull the carb out a bit to put it back on. Hopefully thats it. Thanks for the video. I was wondering exactly what that hose did and why it stopped the bike from starting. I sprayed a bit of start ya bastard into the air intake and it turned over once so I know its getting no fuel.

Thanks man! Seat seperate, coil springs seperate off ebay or amazon. And a simple bracket made from home depot steel hole’d strap and some bolts/washers/nuts. I don’t remember specifics, but I know once I got all the separate parts it wasn’t hard to tie it onto the factory mounts, you could do it I’m sure. Good luck!

Thanks I changed my petcock with a used one and I deleted the vacuum membrane on the old one and I didn't reconnect it on the new one. I was wondering what the problem was. Now I know. I think I'm going to delete the membrane on the new (used) petcock. I'll check that tomorrow.

That works! Just make sure you aren’t getting any leak by on the rubber-tip needle seat controlled by the float in the carb. Easy riding😎

I'm hoping this is my problem on my dad's 97 sportster...it would crank but no start.. I sprayed the carb it fired up then off...I was messing with my carb today and was going to take it apart to clean and notice this exact same hose like yours..I was guessing to that it was not getting fuel...came to KZread and came cross your vid...thumbs up..back to the garage....what type of hose did you replace with? whee can I find some..thnx

Hi! That line was fuel grade vac hose at my local parts store. Just take your old line in and they can match the diameter. I hope this is your problem too! Once you get it replaced and back together, you can disconnect the fuel line to the carb and crank. Now you should see gravity pulling fuel past the shut off switch. After you have it running, test this. If you are bogging down and almost stalling out when you twist the throttle, then your accelerator pump needle is clogged, inside the carb. Good luck!

What are the symptoms? My 06 883 no matter how long it warms up(but even worse if not warmed up), pop and hisses around the air intake whenever I give it a little throttle. Like literally as soon as I barely twist the throttle, it happens and I have to rev in a bit and kind of ride it a bit to be able to get going in every gear, especially 1st and 2nd. Any ideas? Accelerator pump? Petcock? This hose you’re talking about?

Hi Jake, these hoses aren’t it. This hose would prevent the bike from starting at all. Hissing indicates an intake boot leak, and may pop as well. If you are getting air in beyond the carb then the bike would be super lean especially when cold. Start by pulling the carb and intake boot. Look everywhere for a crack/split that would let air bypass the carb. Let us know!

I did! Years ago I googled ‘fat boy Sportster’ or something like that and found a guy that sells a conversion kit for about (at the time) $600. Then, I bought the fat wheel and tire to match the rear. Not difficult to do with hand tools in the garage. Skinny front tires have never been my cup of tea:-)

I believe you would be fine. Make sure to cap off your vac line. And, be aware that if your needle seat seal leaks, you will overfill the carb bowl….

I think everything past mid 80’s had voes, that needs a full vac source. Carb behind the throat, intake boot..anywhere on the intake track should work perfect. The line that goes to the petcock would just have to be plugged/capped and leave everything else alone (take it off the Y and us a vac cap to close the open nipple).

So my bike runs great on the roads but when I’m on the freeway it really struggles, and then once I get off the freeway and back on the road it acts as if I’m out of gas even if I have a full tank and I have to be very gentle on the throttle or else it feels like it’s not getting gas and wants to turn off. I’ll get it home and the next day it’ll run good as long as I don’t do high speeds again. Any ideas? I don’t know what to do :/

I think there is a filter on the petcock inlet, make sure that is clean and flowing well, including the petcock itself. Clean the carb, there are different circuits that pull with different amounts of vac load. Next would be plugs and a new coil. Also, air filter has to be clean. Finally, a compression check may be required just to see if everything is sealed tight. Good luck.

So, when I park mine back into the garage (all my carbed toys) I turn the fuel off and let the engine idle until it dies. That helps keep the carb from gumming up by using the fuel bowl up. I also put just a little (cap full) of two stroke oil into the fuel per tank, which also helps with gumming. If your modified petcock is left on, and it does start to fill..there is only the float and needle tip to keep the gas out. Just keep that in mind and good luck!

Also if you have a vacuum leak your V.O.E.S Switch will not Advance your timing, which will give you a retarded timing condition, which is not good for your engine...

Are you the first owner? Harley Davidson uses Harley Davidson hose. Just replaced it on my heritage softail. Even had original Harley part number and bar and shield. Nice lil sporty too man

I am the OG owner! Bike has about 1019miles on it. Just broke 1000miles in 2019😂 I’ve kept everything I removed from the bike, including the special HD Dunlop tires😳🤣
