[No Filter Interview] South Korea! It was disappointing!

All countries have both good ( • [No Filter Interview] ... ) and bad things at the same time.
1. What are some things that Koreans say that you dislike?
2. What Korean culture you'd like to see change?
3. What was disappointing as you toured in Korea?
4. Have you been discriminated in Korea before?

Unfortunately Korea is not a place for foreigners, the discrimination, social and cultural exclusion are common issues for all the foreigners living here along with the poor legal protection we have. Despite all the daily racism foreigners face, is curious how almost nobody talk about that in social media, instead people prefer always to lie and say how great is Korea for foreigners.

I spent 3 months in Korea. As a country it is beautiful and would advise anyone to visit. But the people are absolute trash in there. It’s not only because you are a foreigner, they are trash among themselves as well. Just check on how bad they can bully their icon and lead them to unalive themselves. The Korean netizens always make headlines for their bullying. They judge you for everything. Your parents got a divorce ? They will judge. You are not the beauty standard of being fair skin and slim ? They will judge. I went to a dermatologist for scalp itchiness and he told me I had fat on my legs and he can remove it. Like calling me fat. Im 160cm (5ft2)120 Lbs (55kg) so I am average like really horrible. They don’t have respect. And between themselves it’s the worst bodyshaming is normalised. Even in the TV drama where they portray big people (oh my Venus) they didn’t even take a real big person and like put make up on the actress. Also they made the actress lose all her weight before the romance like it’s giving so much bad vibes like it’s so bad. I can’t imagine someone overweight watching shows like this. Also they always make fun of big people. And they promote bad health diet like the IU diet where you eat only a apple for a whole day ???. They have one of the biggest unalivement rate in the world. Obviously they are not all like that but I can’t lie it’s extremely the generality. Also in the work industry you have that stuff of sucking up to your boss and them mistreating you like hell no. I hope the new generation of Korean will break from this

I hope we as people love and respect each other and be kind to one another. Discrimination is common in any country either to the people who r living there or to the people who r visiting it. This kind of attitude comes from people. There r rude people anywhere around the world. I hope people can change their behaviour towards others. From what I have known, Koreans seem to be so fixed on beauty and looks, that they r facing a lot of mental problems because of the unknown society pressure towards such standard of beauty. I hope they can be a bit free for themselves and their loved ones and accept their unique beauty, not by judging with some kind of stubborn beauty standard. But by accepting and acknowledging that they r beautiful and everyone r beautiful in their own unique way. Let us all try to be loving, happy, kind and forgiving towards life and people whom we meet because hating will not get us anywhere, it just makes us and other ppl feel miserable. I hope one can love, respect and cherish themselves and people around them, not just in Korea but everywhere.

I had a classmate that ended up in that dark world.. and it’s very dark...and it is targeted to foreigners who can’t receive help because they don’t have any one in korea. But like the nth room..because there were so many people that cared, there was HUGE change...and hopefully it will make it a bit easier for women in korea.. small steps and people’s opinions and criticsim Gov and systems help propel a society. Aka kpop idols trying to pass and make suicide and depression a more talked about topic..trying to stop cyber bullying.,these concerns were important enough for people to speak out.. So opinions and different perspectives are important for betterment as well safety for all, but if we can’t even empathize for people ...we are hopeless.

They’re either idolized or discriminated against. I’ve never been idolized in China because I’m Chinese American, but I’ve seen a white friend of my dad’s be treated like a celebrity. On the other hand, there was this girl I went to school with for a month who hated me *a lot.* I didn’t really do anything to her but I’m assuming it was because of me not being born in China, since she got extra pissed whenever I spoke English or mentioned the U.S. I hope I don’t experience too many issues like that in South Korea since I’m East Asian and can speak Korean. But yeah, just be careful- it may seem like a beautiful country and it is, but there’s still quite a few ugly parts.

I understand KPop and Kdramas are all the rage right now, but people just going to these countries seem to be suffering from not doing their homework on said country. However, seeing the harsh reality often is the only “kick up the a**” some people need. This isn’t just limited to Koreans living in South Korea. Most South Koreans who decide to move to other countries also bring this m mentality with them. You can see this most Korean owned business in western countries, especially restaurants. I used to be a avid admirer of Korean food until I got food poisoned far too many times and from different Korean restaurants. I thought this was just a coincidence however other People I went with who lets say met the Korean beauty standard we’re fine when they ate there. Koreans (not all) are a very looks based people and will treat you worse if you don’t meet their standards even in a business setting. They don’t want your service and as they can’t openly discriminate like they can in Korea, they use other forms to stop you from going back to the businesses. They certainly have done a good job with their media to influence people but I do believe as more people interact with their culture on a non superficial level, the bad will overwhelming rare it’s ugly head. The only Koreans that are approachable are those who were born outside of Korea.

A lot of very rich South Koreans are moving into the area where I grew up. Changing all the businesses and putting out signs only in Korean. As customers I just find it's demeaning, demanding and ungrateful of any service offered. Then since they own all the businesses they are also now our bosses. Don't even get me started on the Korean boss culture. So toxic. You're right about the divide between people born in the US vs. native to sk. Even still, manners get passed down, and a lot of teenagers pick up their parents' bad habits.

As a tourist, I encountered very few people who will help for directions on our first day at Myeondong. The first one who was actually helpful was an old man and shop owner who showed us how to go to our hotel. The rest we just searched on google map before our walking tour. Our young tourist guide did not also hide her deep hate for the Japanese as she told us the history of the castles we visited. The worst thing we experienced there was a group of women asking us to take pictures of them and I accidentaly scrolled out the photo app and she slapped my hand. I walked away with my daughter. I could hear them talking in high pitched tone. So when I see them as tourist in my country, I treat the nice one nice and the rude ones the best they deserve. I would rather visit Japan more and no I am not a fan of Kdrama at all. In histort Japan has treated my country badly but those people and government are dead. Move on.

Meanwhile in Korea you get outright banned from certain restaurants and bars for being foreigner and get sidelined in job applications for being a foreigner. There's no contest, the government at least fucking protects your rights and even helps you for being non-white. East Asian countries are all like this, in different ways. Their culture is still extremely xenophonic. Because they don't have multiculturality in their history (look at the USA) or in their politics (the European Union). But above the culture, it's the people's mindset that matters, and though I am sure that many Koreans are friendly and open minded, the normality is not trusting other people and not opening up to others, they have a rigid social scale which mortifies and oppresses everyone who doesn't sit at the top. So it's a society based upon extreme competitivity, about who arrives first, who survives the longest, because it's a society based on work, and not values like human life, condivision, love, generosity.

That's sentence like 'she's fair and beautiful' or 'you'll get dark under', i don't think it's racist. More like a prefereces and concern if it's saying for their own people. Most people just honest for they favorit, but it's not like they hate others. Just more liking to something else. If they're saying it to your face and to you, then just splash water to them.
