No Dice Lake - Copper Glance Lake, Washington State

Фильм және анимация

Thirty years ago we heard rumors of a route to No Dice Lake near Winthrop. Ever since then we wondered what the route was like, and how difficult the access really was. This last weekend our lingering questions were finally answered. Larch madness draws thousands of hikers to popular trails. Larches turn a bright golden color before losing their needles. When we passed Maple Pass trailhead on our way to the Billy Goat trailhead there were several hundred cars parked there. When we arrived at Billy Goat Trailhead we were the only vehicle there. The trail to Eight Mile pass is wonderful! It is well maintained with minimal grade. However, from the pass onwards there is now no discernable route due to extensive forest fire damage. You must navigate a dangerous maze of burned logs and debris. This effort is difficult to reconcile, but No Dice Lake is absolutely beautiful! In this video we document the route to the lake, and also continuing over the ridge between Big and West Craggy peaks to Copper Glance Lake and its drainage basin. There are few places left on earth where you can experience such complete solitude within such a dramatic and beautiful natural setting. Let’s work to preserve and protect the few such places we have left.

Great stuff, as usual. Thanks for sharing. I did the Copper Glance trail at peak larch time back in the 80's. The walls and crags there make a beautiful backdrop for the exquisite sunlit larches, which you captured well. I always wondered about getting to No Dice Lake, so thanks for showing me that, too. It's interesting also how those highest larches in the rocky terrain often are out of the reach of downslope fires. One of a number of things I've always found so appealing about good old Larix lyalli. They grow in austerely beautiful places and can live very long lives. I remember the cut stump of one many years ago beside the trail near Maple Pass that was about 3 inches in diameter. With the aid of my hand lens, I counted 157 growth rings. Amazing. Since they don't start producing seeds in appreciable quantity until they are around 200 years old, it made me very careful about how I treated the small ones thereafter.

A lot more private than Maple Pass loop. You two find the quiet places.
