No cut, switchless mod Sony Trinitron RGB Scart CRT TV

Ойындар

A Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) looks best with RGB analog video. RGB inputs on CRT’s were not a standard in many counties. Compared to RGB, Composite video produces artefacts such as ‘dot-crawl’ and is overall less sharp. Contrary, RGB delivers pure Red, Green and Blue signals directly to the TV’s video chip (AKA Jungle chip), which gets amplified to the CRT’s Red, Green and Blue electron guns for a sharper signal. Yes, you do loose dithering effects with RGB but that’s a trade-off I can live with. Having said that, there’s also absolutely nothing wrong with playing in composite video and I don’t believe in gatekeeping and elitism for any hobby; you do whatever you like and whatever makes your experience more enjoyable.
For many, a professional/broadcast video monitor (Sony’s branding as PVM and BVM) are the only way to game in RGB unless transcoding to component video on a consumer CRT (a great alternative by the way!). This modification taps into the vacant RGB inputs to turn this TV into the Everyman’s PVM. It’s been done many times, but none that I could find without cutting the plastic case of the TV. Therefore not as a necessity but as a challenge, this video documents a switchless, no cut RGB mod on a Sony Trinitron KV-14VM5G (Australian model which is KV-14VM5GAS). #crt #crtgaming #retrogaming #trinitron #scanlines #scart #240p #sony
Other topics that are briefly covered: convergence, shadow mask vs aperture grill, jump in vertical sync, calculating TVL TV lines

    I wonder if it would be possible to take RGB output of some late jungle chip and use it as a cheapo transcoder? I mean devices converting other signals to RGB are pretty expensive but some jungle chips support component, s-video and composite so you could build a cheapo converter to be used with CRTs or upscallers :D I'd love to be able to plug component devices into my TV and composite -only consoles to OSSC.

    @@voltare2amstereo Ah, there you go, that's good, so it's a similar deal to what we had in the States then, because for sure, S-Video is a big improvement over composite, and YPbPr is nearly indistinguishable from RGB on a CRT, for the most part. My favorite big Trinitron here is component only, I just use RGB2COMP. Can you get away with component at 60Hz on those Aussie component CRTs, like you can with RGB SCART and composite sometimes on later European sets?

  • @MarcoRetro316

    @MarcoRetro316

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeh I should’ve mentioned we had S-video for a short while and then Component. Very few non-European TV’s had scart here which is what makes RGBRob’s channel so great for us in Australia because if you stumble across a Scart set there’s high chance he’s covered it or something similar. That’s a great question about component running in 60Hz. I don’t think it would matter and I imagine would be treated the same way that RGB treats 60Hz

  • @crt_rex

    @crt_rex

    @@MarcoRetro316 Mine here does 60Hz on component, but it's not European, the folks I bought it from brought it from the Middle East, but they're PAL there too. The component quality is beautiful, has S-Video too. Funny how it is, in Europe, SCART is abundant on consumer sets, but S-Video not so much, and YPbPr is even less common, although it does exist. I think you're right, the Aussie ones will probably do 60Hz on YPbPr just fine. In the States, any CRT with component goes for crazy prices most of the time, I bet it's the same there, huh?

    @@diegall there’s 3 wires soldered to the sensor: VCC in, ground, and VCC out. The VCC in/out will be the same voltage and the input voltage also powers the sensor. In my experience they’re great for around 3v in/out. You also need to open/close the appropriate A or B jumper pads to select the state, in this case the state is always on VCC out when pressed. It’s not that convenient a mod though as when the TV is powered on you need to remember to touch the sensor. Not that big of a deal but it was more of a novelty/proof of concept. Rgb modding is pointless when you can color calibrate

    I doubt many people are RGB modding these days just for colour accuracy. RGB will always have better clarity over composite even against a good comb filter. For us owners of PAL consoles you won’t get colour 60Hz unless you have changed the consoles oscillating crystal. RGB modding gets around this and lets you play in colour 60 Hz, so it’s far from pointless

    @@MarcoRetro316 I have seen videos of people not being able to tell the difference on well calibrated monitors. Even home on my Triniton it even looks like how people say RGB looks on composite

    @@realamericannegro977 You can tell the difference. Back in the day I used to go to my friends and setup the SCART output of their DVD players or satellite receivers to RGB from composite (that was the default since not all TV were compatible with RGB) and on every TV was a completely different thing. I doesn't matter how the monitor is calibrated. The problem is that in the composite the color signal is modulated along the sync pulses into a single composite cable. In fact the composite signal is first separated from the sync signal, then luma (Y) and chroma (C) are separated, then chroma is separated into B-Y and R-Y. Then from Y and the difference B-Y and R-Y the RGB signal is finally reconstructed and sent to the tube. Of course all these conversions, done with entirely analog filters, have losses, especially when the hardware gets old, capacitors are not good as they were new, oscillators have drifted, etc. Also the color information has to occupy a very small bandwidth of the video signal, that was done back in the day to be backward compatible with B/W TVs that could just ignor color information (that is stored in a portion that is not shown on the screen on B/W TV). The problem is that compressing an RGB signal into this small portion of the spectrum is not a lossless operation! And no matter how good your TV is, if the color information is partially lost, it's lost.

    @@alerighi dang that is too much going on. It sounds like the tv would look worse over time from that mod.
