It’s a brilliant touch at the end of the scene, where Harelson’s character mentions the missing floor to the building. It’s a nuanced yet deeply significant reminder to the audience that there is one important thing that is being overlooked in the hunt for Chigurh. And that missing thing is: a red stapler.

From IMDB trivia section: In the novel, Sheriff Bell says of the dope-dealers, "Here a while back in San Antonio they shot and killed a federal judge." Cormac McCarthy set the story in 1980. In 1979, Federal Judge John Howland Wood was shot and killed in San Antonio by Texas free-lance contract killer Charles Harrelson, father of Woody Harrelson (Carson Wells).

@@ClearOutSamskaras That's the whole point here. He is an overconfident Hitman. So although he considers Chigurh's destruction in such high regard, he still feels he can somehow get the better of him. And the way he does that is also impressive. He rents out a room in Hotel Eagle, the same hotel in which the shootout between Moss and Chigurh took place the previous night. Wells assumes that Chigurh would never appear in the same crime scene he was and was involved in last night and stayed in that hotel. Unfortunately for Wells, Chigurh was smarter and got the better of him. At the end, Carson Wells tries to bargain with Chigurh knowing that it won't work. He struggles to accept his fate. When Chigurh tells him to accept his situation as there would be more dignity in it, Wells tells him to go to Hell. There's a strange feeling going through him as he was so confident that he would best Chigurh but the tables turn around.

That's right, I heard that some years ago. I heard one wacky theory concerning him and the JFK assassination. The argument I heard was this, if that shooting went down in Dallas the way the Ollie Stone movie depicts, then those hiring the assassins would pick the top gunmen in the country and at the time, Woody's dad would have been one of the top 5 marksmen in the country. I would like to add a caveat, taken from the film, 'is it a true story?'. 'Well, it's certainly true that is a story!'.

I was initially disappointed when Carson was killed so easily. However after thinking about it, it really lends to conveying just how dangerous Anton is. This scene lets you know that Carson is someone you call when you really need a situation handled properly. No one else will do. He didn't even get close to taking on Anton, and Anton dispatched of him easily.

Well carson did in fact have bad luck when he was killed and that just add more fear to Chigurh and the film (and the book) people belive that bad people always have bad luck in the fantasy. Even when they win in the end, everything is against them. But you can see in the film that Chigurh is one of the most lucky here. He was not kill in the hotel. Carson dont notice him until it was too late for Carson to do anything. The car dont kill him neither. There is not good people luck or bad people luck here. People sometimes is just very lucky. I honestly belive thats Anton most fearsome quality, he is a lucky man with a job that really needs a lot of luck because no one is bullet proof.

Its more realistic. There is no way he would know that Chigurh would know the people who hired him hired somebody else to kill him. If you think about what a hired killer does, its use the element of surprise, thats why somebody hires soembody that the 'victim' wouldn't know. Poeple make it seem like a killer is some super smart or lucky person when killing somebody who doesn't expect it is about the easiest job in the world for a psycho. How easy does he kill the guy when he takes his car? Easy, because of course who expects that? So it seems 'sloppy' of him, to let Chigurh corner him on the stairs, in hindsight he's likely thinking 'dam I should have run". Contrary to what a lot of people think Chigurh is not some mindless killer, he's just insane, he's the dogs of war. The REAL evil is the corporation that hires him and controls the drug trade. Even Chigurh doesn't escape unscathed. As it says in this scene, that company is so powerful they can make a whole floor disapper.

The dialogue seems silly but there is so much more going on here. Chigurgh represents the fate of death that turns upon the fortune or misfortune of a "coin toss" that symbolizes the natural forces beyond our control that decide whether we live or die. The movie makes it clear elsewhere that all who "see" Chigurh die ("You've seen him, and you're not dead yet?"; "You did not see me."), yet this man Carson Wells claims he's seen him and yet stands there alive to tell of it. How does he avoid this fate? How does anyone escape the forces of fortune and luck beyond our control? This is where the dialogue here matters so much. The suit suggests that Carson has been extraordinarily lucky, telling him: "You've lived somewhat of a charmed life." Carson denies that he is lucky at all: "I cannot say charm has had a whole lot to do with it." But then he observes the building has a missing floor, i.e. the "13th Floor" that many buildings do not count because of superstition that the number is unlucky. Carson clearly does not understand, respect, or believe in luck, superstition, fate, etc. He believes he controls his own destiny and that is why he could see Chigurgh and still live. But like all of us will find out at some point in our lives, he is wrong.

It has nothing to do with the 13th floor, though. If he said he saw a floor missing in the elevator, sure, but he didn't; he counted them from the street. If he counted 16 floors, and 13 was skipped, then the elevator would say "17" floors. That isn't "missing". "Missing" means he counted, say, 16, and the elevator only shows 15 floors. He knows a floor isn't available to anyone outside the know, and is likely for illegal activities. He's letting his employer know that he isn't as slick as he thinks he is at hiding his activities or planning for the long term. He's letting him know that if he tries to hire someone else to come after Wells - as he just hired Wells to go after his previous hire - that he's dealing with someone more competent than he gives credit.

Woody is from Texas. Of course, he does the Texas accent correct and spot-on. He laces in some little things that I hear often. That tight-mouthed little "yessir" was a nice touch. Unlike so many actors that overplay it and try to sell it -- Woody keeps it even keel and restrained. The Coen Brothers are sticklers for those kinds of things -- particularly Texas stuff, since they lived here -- and they always get it just right. Everything from the production design to the costumes brought me back to my childhood in the 70s. The hunting jacket blazers, the pearl capped buttons on the shirts, the hard line crease in the pants -- they know what they're doing.

Until I read the comments, I never realized this is the same actor that played Milton in Office Space. Both small parts, but I gotta say the man's a chameleon, damn good actor.

The actor talking to Woody was really good in a movie called Sweetwater. A really clever Western with Ed Harris.
