No Country for Old Men: Josh Brolin's Unauthorized Behind the Scenes

Ойын-сауық

A piece featuring additional cast and crew interview snippets and behind-the-scenes footage. Directed & Produced by Josh Brolin. We find comments from Joel and Ethan Coen, Jones, Bardem, Graf, Brolin, Macdonald, production supervisor Karen Getchell, associate producer Dave Diliberto and actor Woody Harrelson.
It's actually a funny tongue-in-cheek mockumentary. From the film's collector's edition Blu-ray bonus features.
Here's Josh Brolin's real comments about Coen brothers:
Q: When other actors have described working with them, they’ve said they’re like one mind in two bodies. Is that the feeling you have working with them?
Yeah, but you have to understand I’ve done years of publicity on them. We all play up this thing - George does and I do - we all play up this thing about how weird and f*cking strange they are, and quiet, and all this stuff. But it’s really not. Like, Ethan said ‘I saw you on a talk show the other day when we were coming out with Hail, Caesar! and I felt so bad for you.’ Because there was a moment where I didn’t believe my own bullsh*t anymore. You tell the press things like ‘they’re really weird and they’re like one mind in two heads’ and [the press] are like, ‘one mind in two heads, that’s a good soundbite’, or whatever it is. You just lend yourself to it and you know you’re doing it. I just caught myself, in an interview in front of millions of people and I died in my own bullsh*t for a couple of seconds.
The truth of the matter is, they’re the most pleasant, collaborative, incredibly creative guys I’ve ever worked with. There’s nothing I would say no to. It could be horrendous and I’d still say yes. They could say ‘we’re going to do a Walt Disney story about pornography’, and I’d be like ‘great, let’s do it’. I don’t care. I just get it, it’s fun being with them. And it’s not necessarily fun, I’m not on the set laughing the whole time, but I very much appreciate their level of discomfort and what I think makes them great writers. That’s all they have you know.

Also, his adultered voice wasn’t hard to work out it was him, apart from the obvious silhouette, the slight accent and his unique cadence… Plus, Bardem’s adultered voice was very close to how he sounds in Skyfall at times so it wasn’t a stretch to figure out it was him at all, in fact they probably altered it enough to not sound exactly like him but just enough to sound like him through a dodgy 2 way or something like that…

I think his point is being missed because of how he worded it. He definitely says "on purpose" in regards to him changing his appearance. That was for the part, no question. But when asked if that was ONLY for the role (when beer and smoking were the last things mentioned), he could be saying it wasnt just to look the part and land the role but also to embody the character and feel like shit. Or he could be saying it was stress from working on the movie and he used that to his advantage. Either way, he doesn't actual mean all of that had nothing to do with fitting the role.

My heart goes out to Javier Bardem. He is an incredible artist, lashed to the yoke of the Coen brothers' plow, being driven, whipped (both physically and emotionally) by the devil demon auteurs with nary a drop of human decency or pity. He will have to carry the heavy weight of their brutality with him for the rest of his days - or at least until he gets his Beverly Hills mansion.

Bardem gave an amazing performance. Really good acting is often very painful throughout the creative process. Who can say what was appropriate or not? I think immediately of Ellen Burstyn and William Friedkin and what he made her do, how he went about it, or how Friedkin worked with the non-actor (priest in real life) who gave an astoundingly crisp and beautiful performance throughout the film and over the broken body of his friend at the bottom of that stone staircase. The tales are legion of those creative grapples.

In other words, it's a joke done with straight faces by the actors -- actors who love the Coens talking as though serious about what vain, nasty people the Coens are to work for. I thought it was a straight documentary too until things started getting silly at 2:00. It's hard to explain humor to someone who's missed the joke, but I suggest you watch again because you definitely missed this one. And Ironically, this kind of deadpan humor happens to be the kind of thing the Coens are best known for. It also was Dave Letterman's stock in trade.

Mate of mine worked on Skyfall and told me about a funnymoment where Daniel Craig kind of lost all his confidence one day and needed geeing up, overheard Craig say something like "Oh my god how can I even compare with that he's got more screen presence just sitting there than I have trying my hardest on my best day"

It runs in the family, his mother and grandparents were all recognized international actors, his uncle Juan Antonio Bardem was a renowned director father of another important current director and screenwriter, Miguel Bardem. Javier's brother, Carlos, was already famous for his bully roles in Hollywood 20 years ago, he is also a director, screenwriter, producer and even has several award winning books published. With that family background it is not difficult to become a good actor.

It is demonizing Mexicans to the hilt, as drug dealers, murderers, and phychos. I guess this is what sells in Hollywood and as usual the Hill Billies in Texas are the good guys and the Mexicans are the bad guys. Then I saw this masterpiece, it had everything, the landscape and detail of Sergio Leone, the wit of an early Tarantino movie and a smooth cinematography and depth of the characters like in a Scorsese. The lack of a soundtrack also adds to the crude screentime- not a single distraction.

I had a friend in the 80s with Anton Chigurh hair. He was a brilliant Unibomber type. The secret to the hair was having his invalid mother cut it twice a year in her room at the care facility. She would have him lay on her bed with his head positioned off the edge as she cut the hanging hair. He was required to rotate position until she was able to cut it evenly 360 degrees.

I assume that it was a joke, but this is the kind of mistakes that spaniards make when we speak English. We use words that sounds good to us... 'Objetivo' in spanish means goal, so 'objective' - literal translation to 'objetivo' - should mean goal...

@@serdow It does jajaj. When you train as an actor you say objective instead of goal (most of the times). Eg: Scene objective, Super objective, etc
