No Car and getting Transportation to the Villages

I tried Groome transportation! No rental car and no car during my visit to the Villages. Is it possible?

Hi Gary, good topic. My wife and I are full-timers here in TV. We bought in Newell in April. We sold our second car up north, so we have one car and one golf car. If I were a part-timer, I would probably maintain one car up north, and the one car/one golf car in TV. If your stay is relatively short in TV, you can probably get by with just your golf car and the e bike. You could also use Kroger for food deliveries, and Amazon, etc. for other items such as hardware store purchase and the like. I agree, car rentals are way too expensive nowadays, so if you can do without, all the better.

My wife and l have rented a month at a time in TV. Never had a car, just a golf cart. Works well. One of our biggest draws to TV is you don't need a car, take a golf cart.

thanks for this very helpful video. I'm canadian and don't want the hassle of renting a car for long periods of time, or purchasing a second vehicle. The details of the transit to the villages are also helpful for folks who are visiting someone who lives there.

Watching this while at Boston Logan flying into Orlando where I’ll pick up my rental car. Yes those costs sure do add up!

Take the groom service to one of the golf cart rental locations if you don’t have a golf cart.

Thanks Gary for the opposite perspective on getting around the villages. Roy & Karen did a video of taking their cart north. Up there you can get to lowes by cart. Of course I’ll bet it’s a 3+ hour round trip lol Always enjoy your videos. Can’t see more from TV

Actually I go from Sawgrass to Sumter in less than an hour by golf cart. It’s a nice ride. Did it on Friday to the lighthouse restaurant for the $19 lobster special. That was a better price than back home in NE.

I saw another home in my neighbor hood that appeared to only have only a golf cart and no cars.

I moved here in June 2022 I haven’t pulled my car out of the garage for 7 month’s, I just open the garage door start the car let it run for 5 minutes 3 times a week. I go everywhere on my golf cart. Shopping, the VA, to the town squares and of course golf. I have no desire to leave the bubble. If it’s not golf accessible I don’t go.

Thanks for the video, Gary. I would have appreciated some ballpark costs to compare. My only experience was flying to Tampa and taking Blue Line shuttle. (Tampa airport is less crowded, but Villages shuttles are fewer and more pricey - around $100 in 2022 for a private ride door to door)

It was very reasonable at $40 per person plus tip from Orlando. I think if you do private car ride it appears to be $70 and up. That is a good deal if 2 or more. Now I haven’t checked the private car prices so it could be higher but I thought I saw that on facebook.

I can't imagine not havig a car. I just assume most people drive back and forth from up north. Good info if you need to fly out of Orlando for vacations.Thank you for the info.

So, if I understand correctly, you got on a small bus at Orlando airport and took it directly to your house; is that correct? Or did you get on a large bus at the airport and it took you to Brownwood, and then you got on a small bus at Brownwood and it took you to your house?

  • @GaryAbbott

Yep I took the small van/bus directly to my house. Worked well. Did not take the large express bus that went to Brownwood.

If a Village resident living south of 44 had to go to The Villages hospital or a doctor's office near the hospital on a regular basis for medical treatments, would it be practical to do that on a golf cart? And if someone has to leave The Villages for medical treatment, using a golf cart won't work. Having only a golf cart for a short trip would work, but long term would it work?

I think you still need a car if you are full time but if you are visiting less than a month at a time you can get away with just your golf cart.

Groome is a transportation company with offices around the US. You should contact them directly for the answer. I know I was on their service specifically for airport to the Villages.

  • @unschool3376

How much did the Groome ride cost? How long will you be without a car? I guess bringing a car down to keep at the Villages isn’t an option?

  • @GaryAbbott

Groome cost was $40 per person plus tip. Usually here about a week at a time in the winter. Still need all my vehicles in the winter up north for work.

I think you are right if it is not a short stay. Even though my wife and I drove two golf carts in a very bad thunderstorm but survived.
