It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZread experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 2005 Lexus IS250 SE, we get stuck in the back seat, bemoan a lack of parking sensors, get excited about a beige leather interior (once again), try some ventilated seats and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    "Too Much excitement detected" 😅 The beige and black work well together. The IS 250 is a lovely looking car. Has aged very well. 😍 I think the brand new equivalent of this is the hybrid ES300. The Lexus range is mostly SUVs now I gather. An ES would go on my new car shortlist alongside a Volvo S60 if I could afford it.

    Yes, the ES is the only Lexus saloon currently on sale in this country. They used to have an awful lot more. The beige leather interior is most agreeable. We also have another IS coming up on the channel soon!

    The rear legroom is appalling, it really needs parking sensors, the boot is not the biggest and some people find the ride too firm, but otherwise these are pretty good! Thank you for watching, sir.

    I once had this model's predecessor - a immaculate low milage IS 200 - and absolutely adored it. In many ways it was perhaps the best car I've ever owner in terms of quality if not specification or performance. Unfortunately, some loon drove into it and wrote that lovely car off. I seriously thought about replacing it with one of these IS 250's - good as the 200 was the 250's interiors are in a different class. However, the examples I saw were all over budget and high milage too - but I often regret not getting one as I think these cars can take hight milage better than almost anything else. Id have a Lexus over a BMW or Mercedes any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

    The IS 250 is a surprisingly good car, but there are some limitations. I would actually like to try an IS 200 or 300 now myself. Sorry to hear about what happened with yours! Yes, these would be far more likely to last than the 3-Series or C-Class of the era at the higher mileages, although they do need maintenance like everything else.

    Such a lovely V6 noise. I would enjoy listening to that all day. Sumptuous interior although a little wood would make it even more luxurious. Definitely a car for a very very long journey without leaving its driver with fatigue and pain. Nice colour as well. Very tasteful car.

    Really brilliant video. Brought back memories of my parent's very very similar IS250 SE manual (although it was red with black leather) and is still running around with similarly low mileage according to it's MOT history! PV55 EJX if the owner is around?

    I totally with you on the diesel, they were awful and not a patch on the contemporary 320d which there were aiming for, rough and geared way too high. The petrol is a lovely place to be, they last well but just a tad thirsty…

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    @lloydvehicleconsulting

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes sir, there's a reason we don't talk about diesels on this channel. We don't discuss the BMW N47 engine either, probably one of the worst ever made. The petrol probably isn't very economical, but it makes a great sound.

    I strongly considered an IS250 when looking for a cheap luxury car in late 2021, but the tight back seats and small boot put me off, and this gen of IS did have one or two gremlins, like the rear brake pins seizing easily if not greased often enough. Still a really nice car that I do like, but considering a good, well specced example is considerably more money than the Aubergeine GS300 I ended up with, it was a no-brainer. I did also read on forums the manual gearbox in these isn't the most durable, with the clutch going after around 75,000 miles in some cases. The auto suits these much better, I think.

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    Yes, funnily enough we have an automatic IS coming up quite soon! It's also a different bodystyle to this one too. Thank you again for supplying your car for review, sir, it was wonderful. Much more space in the GS, of course, and this car did have a new clutch fairly recently, I believe.

    To us nowadays the big omission is the parking sensors. Especially considering the rest of the spec on this ‘base’ model. But they were quite uncommon in 2005, even on executive models. The other big omission, which continues to this day is the lack on an estate.

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    @lloydvehicleconsulting

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, my Rover 45 V6 has parking sensors and a lot of the other four cylinder models had them too, and it was all over for MG Rover several months before the IS 250 was launched, so I consider it to be a bit of a strange omission, and I completely agree about the lack of an estate variant, it would have solved the issue of the compromised boot space!

    @@lloydvehicleconsulting ah yes, late Rovers seem to have a bespoke spec depending on what they had on the shelf at the time 😀 They were an option on the R50 Minis and e46 BMWs but it is relatively rare to see them. Just passed a 3 door 55 plate Honda Civic, didn’t have them. But I remember seeing them on the 5 door executive model ( now there’s goo no budget car).

    The 2001 E46 I drove in 2021 had rear parking sensors, as did my mother's car, which was a 1995 BMW 520i E34 Touring. You are not correct about the parking sensors being thrown haphazardly onto the later MG Rover era cars, by the way. Most of the 45s in particular had them by the time of the facelift in 2004, including the old 1.4 Club SE I had more than a decade ago. Audio equipment was definitely haphazard by then, but not the parking sensors.
