It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZread experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1998 Vauxhall Vectra B 2.5 V6 Arctic II Automatic, we decide to give a controversial car another chance, come across a rainbow poo, discover surprisingly potent performance, struggle with the weather, complain about blank switches (again) and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

In the United States we got a Saturn based on this model. They came with either a 2.2L 4cyl or a 3.0L V6. Sold a little over 400,000 over the life of the model . Early models quickly developed a reputation for being problematic, especially for timing chain issues on the 2.2 and snapped timing belts on the V6, but that being said you still see them fairly regularly even though the youngest of them is 20 years old.

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, not a fond of those 2.2 engines. The 2.5 V6 needs to have the timing belt changed on time or early, since, as you say, they are very sensitive to skipped maintenance.

The 2.2 is garbage with a cxxp fuel pump and an intolerance for ethanol.

Oh how I have waited for this Review Sir. Mr Coleman's Vauxhall Vectra V6. The Perfect Package, a well built mass market car with a silky smooth V6 engine and automatic gearbox. Plenty of power compared with German junior executive cars but with superior practicality for long distance travel and family duties. Quiet, comfortable with decent handling, despite scathing reviews of the time and it was an improvement on the excellent Mk3 Cavalier that it replaced. Just because the Primera and Mondeo moved things on by a mile does not mean that the Vectra was a bad car. The face lifted version was further improved but this earlier V6 looks absolutely immaculate. The cherry on top is Vauxhall servicing and parts pricing compared with BMW or Audi.

Sir, we do like this surprisingly swift V6 Vectra, although not quite as much as Mr Coleman does. There have been some scathing reviews of the Vectra over the years, and in some way they are justified if you look at the lower end of the model range. However, the V6s are very, very different. The seats can be something of a lottery as well. The four cylinder ones are indeed very cheap to service.

I had a Vectra B when they quite new mine was burgundy in colour , 2.0 GLSi was very similar to my previous cavalier 2.0GLSi although the cavalier was a quicker car. Mine had a centre armrest with storage and the blanked window switch is actually for the mirrors as the GLS had electric mirrors.

A real sleeper of a car, remove the V6 badging and it could pass as a smaller engined Vectra. I remember the Artic special edition but never realised it had the V6. A excellent review as always Sir.

Loved the look of these old vectras, definitely the motorway mucher of its time. I grew up with cavaliers ( had a mk1 in the drive at 16 as a way to learn mechanics). It still amazes me that we cannot produce a glue that holds headlining for more than 20 years. I just use drawing pins and they do a reasonable job rather than the sagging headliner...

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    @lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, Rovers, Jaguars and all sorts of other 1990s cars also suffered from exactly the same issue. Shirt/drawing pins are a good solution to this issue, at least the door cards were not sagging in this as well!

A very nice looking car, and a remarkably well preserved example - but what we really want to know is...did you find the driver's seat comfortable? I liked the look of these and when I was looking to upgrade my daily in the early 2000's, checked a late model used one of these out. The driver's seat was the most unyielding, uncomfortable car seat I have ever encountered, so much so, that I could never consider buying one...bought a '98 Honda Accord V6 instead, and very happy with my choice. Cheers!

I have driven a couple of these before, and they were both far less comfortable, particularly the early 1.6 LS. This one seems much better, I know Ian Seabrook had a lot of problems with his facelifted 2.2 Vectra B seats.

I've always liked the styling of the Vectra, the dashboard and Instrument cluster, were much more aesthetically pleasing, than the Ford Mondeo. I do recall a 2.0 16v LS model a friend had, with a small armrest, and under the lid, it had next to nothing storage space. Excellent review MR Lloyd and MR Coleman does have a gift for finding rare cars.

One does admire the styling of the Vectra especially in 2.2 SRi or even better 2.5 GSI trim! But this is a good example of an "unexceptional" trim and will get treated well by Mr Coleman.

Very good review of a nice car. A 2.2 or 2.6 CDX in Velvet Green with a plush beige interior would be the best! As a nod to the run-out fast Cavalier mk2, we also had the SRi130 (1.8) and SRi150 (2.2) for the B's final year. These had nice half-leather chequered seats and alloy-look around the dials.

These Vectras do seem to be quite specification dependent.

My father had a Vectra V6 in CD form , from new as a company car, he was works director, before he retired. I remember Clarkson slating the Vauxhall Vectras terribly on Top Gear , but my father , although certainly not a die-hard car enthusiast liked the car very much. He always continued having the car serviced through the dealers even when he kept the car into his retirement. However, he changed to a Toyota Avensis after due to the fact when he took the Vectra to the dealers , not one salesman asked how he was, would he like to look at the later models or show him around the showroom so to speak . Certainly a missed opportunity on their part!
