"No, really?", "No, for real?", and "No, actually?" use the "No" to mean "No way," conveying disbelief. The "really," "for real," and "actually," are asking to make sure that what they heard is true. Those phrases should mean the same thing as "I am in disbelief, is that really true?"

@@Conorator well, they aren’t really used as just questions anymore. You’re reading them as “no, really?” I’m thinking of when they’re used like “no for real he was…” or “no really I can’t get over…” or “no actually it was so…” In all these cases, the phrase is used as an introduction to the statement in a similar way to “no because.”

@@hugenerd97 In that case, the "no" would mean something along the lines of "no, I'm not lying," or "no, I'm not joking around." The "really" would just mean "it really is true."

even cooler, a common interjection in Korean is 있잖아 which is a conjugation of the term to have that I don't know how to explain .

This has been an AAVE phrase for decades. It makes sense because AAVE has different grammar rules. "No" serves not only as an objection but as an emphasiser. Well, not really no, more commonly "nah". The phrase "no, like why are you actually looking spectacular? No because, like, it doesn't not work" breaks 20 standard English rules but the sentence "Nah, why you actually looking fabulous? Nah cause like don't not work..." Follows AAVE rules, and sounds much better in the native speakers dialect. As for why they're slightly different... If you've heard a white person say any of the words in the second sentence you probably understand why.

Thank you for this explanation! I’ve been seeing “no because” online a lot lately and it never really made sense to be because I usually couldn’t figure out what “no” is in opposition to

I’ve always interpreted this as is that the “no” is to address the current conversation, and usually to communicate your opposition quickly instead of saying “I disagree with x y and z” then the “because” to actually introduce the idea.

I am so interested to see your videos in like 20-30 years (ofc if your still choosing to post for that long, presumably you wouldn’t and understandably so) it would be an opportunity to see almost a ‘live’ dissection of language over the years and the evolution of it in directly relation to the internet and things of the sort. Keep it up!

Can you explain dropping the L in walk and talk because my whole life I've pronounced the L's and I only recently realised it was incorrect.

Interesting, this has been a thing in Swedish for 10-20 years or so: "ja/nej, men exakt!" (yes/no, [but] precisely!) means the same thing. (Idk if 'but' makes sense there in English, but it does in Swedish) The connotations are probably slightly different, for example, if I'm a bit surprised someone else said something I agreed with, I might start with 'no'

i think a lot of other languages already had this concept, its just that its new in english which i find even more fascinating

I'm a bit surprised, as spanish has been using this for as long as I can remember. "No shut up cuz..." Literally translated to spanish would sound perfectly normal, at least here in Argentina.

My favorite phrase lately I've heard is people answering questions with 'yeah, no' when they mean 'no'

It's been very common in New Zealand and Australian English for a while now, but each country has a different spin on it. Kiwis (people from NZ) will elongate each word (So 'Yeahhh nahhh' or 'Nahhh yeahhh') and rarely add one more ('Yeahhh nahh yeahh') whereas Aussies will combo them back to back ('Ye nah nah ye') and say them a lot faster. I like it a lot.

I always thought of the no as adjacent to stop or wait… Also now I’m curious if any common math terms have interesting histories… and how they’ve affected slang/common language…

As someone that grew up in Cali I’ve been saying this my whole life (I am an adult) I didn’t realize this was something people were seeing as a new thing! It’s so crazy that because of the internet, people are gaining an even more homogenized accent/sense of phrasing than before, and it just so happens that a significant amount of it is borrowed from places like where I live.

i think it might be related to “no, really” as in saying take what i am saying literally which turned into conformation of another person’s opinion which became “no, really, because” which is “no, really” and then introducing a supporting little statement, which got shortened down to “no, because”
