Going against the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense, No. 7 LSU defeated Texas A&M, 87-70, Thursday night in the PMAC.
The Aggies entered the game with the nation’s top scoring defense (48.9 ppg) and No. 2 field-goal percentage defense (31.4-percent), but LSU had all 5 starters score in double figures and shot 46.7-percent from the field to earn the win. Texas A&M hadn’t allowed a team to score 65 points since Nov. 16. LSU’s 87 points were the most the team has scored against Texas A&M since the Aggies joined the SEC.
The game was won at the foul line. LSU gets to the free throw and makes more free throws better than any other team in the country. With the Aggies doing 29-72 in the game from the field and LSU going 28-60, the Tigers’ 25-32 mark from the foul line put them over the edge with the Aggies going just 8-12 total from the charity stripe.
“They are capable,” Coach Kim Mulkey said about her team’s ability to get to the line. “They are strong. They can take you off the dribble. They post you up. They can face you up at the post. It is just ballers. They have the ability to get in there and bang with you and make you guard them. If they do not score the ball, most of them get fouled. That is not something that we just work on. There are five kids that are talented and can do that.”
Angel Reese finished with 20 points and recorded her 8th double-double performance of the season. Reese reached the double-double mark before the end of the second quarter. The junior ended the night with a career-high 7 assists and 18 total rebounds as she continues to score in double figures in all 49 games of her LSU career.
“I was a point guard when I was younger, so I know where my teammates like the ball,” Reese said of her passing skills. “I try to do as much as possible to get them open looks.”
Aneesah Morrow led LSU with 21 points, hauled in 8 rebounds, and added a pair of steals in another solid performance. Morrow has reached double figures in all but one game this season for the Tigers.
Others to reach double figures include Hailey Van Lith (14), Mikaylah Williams (16), and Flau’Jae Johnson (10). Van Lith and Williams combined for 5 of the Tiger’s 6 three-pointers. Johnson scored in double figures for the seventh straight game.
“I am finding ways to be aggressive and improve my playmaking ability,” Van Lith said. “I am not looking for a way to take more shots, but I am trying to get the right reads and know when to shoot the ball. I am getting more comfortable in this system, and I know I can continue to improve; but, it is a process and I am committed to improving.”
Texas A&M’s Endyia Rogers led all scorers with 27 points on 11-22 from the field that included 3 three-pointers. Other Aggies to reach double figures were Aicha Coulibaly and Lauren Ware with 16 and 13, respectively.
LSU will travel to Auburn for a game on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN. Auburn fell at Ole Miss Thursday night by three points and has begun SEC play 0-3.
After a scoreless opening two minutes of action, the Aggies took an early 4-0 lead. LSU responded with an 8-2 run that saw 6 points from Reese and a couple from Morrow. The Tigers made 5 of its last 6 attempts from the field to hold a 13-11 lead at the first media timeout. A Van Lith three sparked a 9-0 run that gave LSU a 22-14 advantage to end the first quarter.
Williams and Van Lith combined for 12 points in the first four minutes of the sec0nd quarter to outscore the Aggies by one. Williams gave LSU its first ten point lead of the night (37-27) after making both free throws following a technical foul assessed to coach Joni Taylor. LSU was held scoreless for over 3 minutes as Texas A&M went 5-7 from the field in the same time. Aaliyah Del Rosario stopped the drought with a nice move down low and gave LSU a 10-point lead, 43-33.
The Tigers owned a 44-37 lead at halftime after scoring 22 in both quarters. The Aggies performed better from the field in the first half shooting 47-percent on 15-32 compared to LSU’s 41-percent on 15-37.
LSU outscored the Aggies 11-8 to start the third quarter and kept its double digit lead at the media timeout, 55-45. The Tigers pieced together a 9-0 run that saw LSU go 6-7 from the charity stripe. Williams hit her second three of the night with nine seconds remaining and gave LSU a 68-49 lead going into the final quarter.
The Tigers opened the fourth on a 8-0 run to push its total past the 75-point mark. Last-Tear Poa nailed a triple to get things started and hustled back on defense to take a charge moments later.
Johnson halted a 9-0 Aggie run with a fast break layup that moved LSU’s total to 80. The Tigers rode its lead through the final minutes and ended the night with a 17-point win over the Aggies.

    I was at this game the atmosphere was electric all night. Endyia Rogers the point guard for Texas A&M was straight balling with 27 points. LSU have a starting 6 that can score from anywhere on the floor and they look like real Tigers on defense

    Apparently the students’ section was filled upfor this game…..good, it should always be like that especially for women’s basketball. One of my friends is a basketball player at our local college (not a major college more like a community college) and when I tell you, the only time that I ever saw our main gym packed with more than like 30 people was for one of their big games “Battle of Long Island” (that’s where we’re from) I was shocked. We’re still living in a time when not everyone takes women’s basketball seriously, and they’ll try to downplay the women by comparing them to the men. Women can be and are just as talented at basketball as the men are. The tiger stadium should practically be over capacity for these games when it comes to the students.

  • @richhahn2443

    That's crazy to say women are as talented as men basketball players. Men and women are built differently. That's not a criticism, just the way it is. I enjoy watching women's basketball for the same reason I enjoy watching women's golf. Most men can't do what college men's basketball or golfers can do and definitely can't do what the pros do, but they can do what the women do. I learn more about technique by watching the women play than the men.

    And this is just a fact……….men support mens basketball. Women do not support womens basketball. Everytime I go to a guys house they are usually watching sports. Football, basketball and ufc. And that’s why those organizations make money. I HAVE NEVER gone to a woman’s house and seen her watching sports. * with the exception being Cynthia cooper, saints and pelicans super fan. But she is the only one and I’m 43 years old. You can’t be mad at men, you have to put the onus on women.

    LSU ain't winning nothing unless Mulkey forces girls to take the extra pass. Morrow, FJ, Williams, and to a lesser extent, Reese, who actually did pass the ball some this game, need to stop playing that stupid, inside, muscle ball BS. If you shoot the 3 then you don't have to force the inside game. It will open naturally. Morrow is flatly lazy to pass and so is FJ and Williams.

    The problems with this LSU team is when they try to force the ball to Angel it results in a turnover. When HVL penetrates at times she does passes her teammates aren't expecting or she tries to force it and she needs to learn how to use her right hand more especially if the other teams press her like Ole Miss did. They all need to stop trying to block every shot that is put up by the opposing team. Flau'Jae needs to take open shots when they are given to her and not try to drive ALL OF THE TIME especially into traffic. I feel Mikaylah or Last-Tear should be the main two running the PG position. Angel needs go up stronger when she is in the paint and develop a jump shot like Morrow.

  • @MaryAYoung

    @MaryAYoung

    If they passed more, lsu would be lethal. Hvl is essentially always open and they often miss her. Flo Jae doesnt have any vision and you could tell she grew up playing one on one in games. She is good, but pass the ball. Morrow is open a lot too and they miss her. That’s mikhala’s only weakness, shot selection and missing open passes. I like that part of angel reeses game.

  • @GREVIOUSBOY

    @GREVIOUSBOY

    @@MaryAYoung true about the passing especially when HVL is open. I think with the Flau'jae part is she has some vision but tends to overthink too much instead of just reacting and go. Morrow does be open too and I think she should dribble more because she is capable of doing it. Mikaylah misses some open players also.

    LSU plays against one another due to everyone wanting to be a star! The games they play should be easy but they make them harder because everyone is selfish! Reese has definitely grown I’m happy for that! She has one more part to add to her game and she’s gonna be great 👍🏽

    @@msl5253 by everyone wanting to be a superstar they make the wins that they are getting harder when they in fact should be easier! Does that make more sense for you? My observation is they play like such due to everyone wanting to be a star and receive the same as Reece! Was that better for you ?

    @@constancebeckham8437 No. What you said was gibberish. You didn't state how/when, as an example. Funny: I just had this conversation with another poster, and when definitive statements were made (similar to yours), we could go back to the game and look, and realize that it wasn't so bad. What are you talking about? You said above/earlier: "My observation is they play like such due to everyone wanting to be a star and receive the same as Reece! Was that better for you ?" That statement's patently false, and wholly your opinion, and doesn't reflect the game, mind you what I said earlier. "Was that better for you"? LOL Nonetheless, everyone's entitled to their opinion, cause that's what it was. An opinion.

    @@msl5253Pretty much is saying LSU can be great, and win every game easily. Big 4 being selfish sometimes and not making the extra pass is going to hurt them. HVL is wide open a lot and they are missing her.

    @@user-ps3lb4yf7k Reese, seems to find her a lot!? Last game, both Flau'jae and M.Williams passed to her (in addition to Reese), so I'm not sure about this HVL stuff?...Must be coming from her biggest fans that want her to avg 20 pts a game like a Louisville. Granted, she's been shooting well (particularly from the perimeter) the last several games.She appears to be a good outlet for the outside shot, based off the past few games. However, we must remember, she was out (for I think eight games) before the Christmas break. She just wasn't going to walk in and avg 20 pts when she's playing with 4 other players that her equal or better. FWIW: In many games the starting 5 avg's a similar amount of shots. That's from Mulkey (and the little I've seen from some of the box scores). But I hear ya.
