IOWA CITY - Iowa vs Michigan State
Written by Dargan Southard | Des Moines Register
Those cloaked in Iowa gold wiggled and fidgeted as the scoreboard drama intensified, this sold-out affair unfolding much differently than expected. The long Big Ten slog tends to produce a few of these even for seasoned squads.
In swooped Caitlin Clark to make sure everyone rested easy.
Locked in a clunky offensive battle Tuesday with a Michigan State women's basketball team trending upward, No. 4 Iowa had to quickly brush away any thoughts of a masterpiece and shift to finding an escape route. Unsurprisingly, it was Clark who located it - burying a logo trey at the horn to hand the Hawkeyes a 76-73 win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
"Honestly, when it left my hand, I knew it was going in," said Clark, whose shot was reminiscent of her buzzer 3-pointer to beat Indiana last season.
The immediate moments before Clark's final act of an incredible 40-point night served as a microcosm of the Hawkeyes' erratic offensive evening. With time running out and Clark hunting an opening that was hard to locate, this 73-73 affair seemed destined for overtime.
Hannah Stuelke, with her back to the basket at the top of the key, dished it over to college basketball's biggest star - who shook free from Michigan State's Moira Joiner for just a second before hitting a stepback to the left and firing away on the 3-point shot.
The sweet swish and ensuing roar let everyone know the outcome.
"Those are situations we work on at the end of practice every single day," said Clark, who finished 14-for-34 from the field and 8-for-20 from deep. "We ran a play to inbound the ball, got it cleanly. Molly (Davis) did set a clean pick on my girl, but Hannah's defender was up guarding her pretty well.
"I think it kind of worked out in my favor because my girl almost went for a steal a little bit, and then I was able to get to my stepback to the left - which is the shot I want to get to."
Concern quickly shifted to celebration with Clark's magical heave, but little up to that point had unfolded smoothly for the Hawkeyes (14-1, 3-0 Big Ten Conference). Just as it was last season at the Breslin Center, Tuesday's matchup featured a bunch of scrappy Spartans hunting a monumental upset. A roaring home crowd that easily brushed off an 8 p.m. weekday tip did little to derail Michigan State (11-3, 1-2) when the tense, late energy kicked in.
Clark's trey with 2:32 left handed the Hawkeyes a 71-67 advantage and offered Michigan State a chance to bow out admirably. But the Spartans didn't take it. Consecutive buckets brought Michigan State back even, and the same happened after DeeDee Hagemann countered Davis' two free throws on a questionable 3-point shooting foul for a 73-73 tie.

Exciting game. Thanks for the upload! Replays show the final shot was good with 0.1s on the clock. The real crime was Davis going to the line for 3 when she was clearly putting the ball to the floor

Either way Iowa still wins or maybe goes to overtime because they would just hold the ball and ensure they take the last shot (clock would reset giving them 30 seconds)

@@User_xxCqvmQflagrant fouls do not exist in women’s college basketball. Only unsportsmanlike and disqualifying fouls. Those are in place of the usual flagrant 1 and 2 fouls. Exciting game. Not the best performance all around by Iowa. Credit to MSU for some of that. Officials let them play, maybe too much, ok, too much. Davis going to the line at the end was questionable for sure but Dawn Staley's comment doesn't add up with the final score. It's either a 3 pt. win or a 1 pt. win. A win is a win.

Basketball is a TEAM sport. Angel Reese makes her team a winner; Clark is merely a greedy player who hogs the ball and doesn't make her team better. Iowa is a 1 person team that gets over-rated and over-publicized so they can use Clark to expand the audience those normally not interested. ESPN bracketologists will protect Iowa with the easiest path, but as soon as they play a top team away from Iowa, they will lose. Non-ranked Nobody-team MSU just showed that Iowa is a phony top seed.

I'm not sure about this, but... I BELIEVE that if you are IN THE ACT OF SHOOTING when time expires, the basket counts. Being In The Act of Shooting may be open to interpretation, but I think that, if your feet are off the ground, and you have the ball in your hands, and you are aligned to deliver said ball to the basket, you are IN THE ACT OF SHOOTING, and the resulting basket counts...

Definitely should not have gone to the line. Can be seen even more clearly at 28:39. In any event, fun game to watch. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Just watched the end in slomo. Just played it over and over. Unless there is an issue with the video, which there certainly could be, the ball was still in her hands with the clock at 0.

In order to win this game: Iowa has to have one player score 40, AND have the same player shoot a buzzer beater (which will be discussed forever). Iowa's NEED to have one player produce these outcomes, does not bode well for Iowa. Ok, it's entertaining and all that, but should Clark be injured, what is Iowa's fall back plan? Even if another Iowa player scores 25 of Clark's 40, Iowa loses; even if you have 4 players scoring 10, and one scoring 25, Iowa loses this game. Is there another consistent point producer on Iowa's team who is capable of taking up Clark's slack? Yeah, enjoy this for what it is, but this doesn't mean Iowa has a great team. This means Iowa has one ridiculously outstanding player.

A so-called #1 seed on its home floor and can barely make it past an unranked MSU team. The Iowa hype is all for business marketing and financial purposes....has NOTHING to do with the actually worthiness or quality level of the team - but the sport's financiers and investors know they have to take advantage of Clark's appearance and appeal - she won't lead anybody to winning anything, but the publicity machine around her will bring more eyeballs and sell more tickets.
