I don't understand how you could expect him to do any better than what he's done given all the holes that needed to be addressed. Mercer needs to ascend and earn his top 6 spot. He had 1 less point than Lafreniere a season prior, and Rangers fans are exclaiming Laf is the NYR Messiah. We have to expect the youth to take a step up in development. With the exception of Tatar, every player they acquired is an upgrade. Playoffs are expected, but after missing last season, I don't mind Fitz reserved response. You have to make the playoffs consistently to be considered a playoff team.

Mercer is awful & doesn't belong anywhere near the top 6. Fitz has done a terrible job with the forward group this offseason. It hasn't improved one bit. Please spare me from the Tatar talk. He's not good. 1.8 million for an old player that had 9 goals in 70 games last season. He's honestly not even worth mentioning. Replacement level.

Third line is well even and all around good. They have all guys who are around the same age. Tatar, Haula, Stefan are all about the same age. I like the line.

I don’t at all get the fear from some fans saying this team won’t make the playoffs. This roster is a hell of a lot bigger, deeper and diverse than last season, not to mention the significant upgrade in net and the hiring of a new coach. Last years squad was still chasing a playoff spot late in the season when we had horrendous goaltending and were injury plagued. Agreed missing on the top 6 upgrade is a miss for now but let’s not let that overshadow all the improvements made. When NJ is in a playoff spot come 2025 trade deadline they can look to add another piece or two for more playoff depth at that point. Assuming a healthy season, I think this team is in the chase to win the metro. My opinion, fans need to give this squad a chance. People heartbroken over Schmid being traded away because they saw him as the future, Vegas plans to have him as their number three at best. Put that in perspective, the guy we felt was our number one is now Vegas number three on a good day. That shows how much of an improvement we will see in net next season.

And if they are judging the season strictly on the fact we did not make the post season they are only looking at the tip of the iceberg and not all the underlying reasons as to why. And many of those underlying reasons were addressed during FA. Looking forward to seeing Nemec and Luke further develop playing with Pesci and Dillon and give them some breathing room to develop without the expectation of anchoring the blue line. I would have loved to see NJ sign Stammer, Marchy, Zadorov and Tanev but reality is every team in the league was vying for their services and NJ was at least in the discussions with the first two indicating NJ is a team the upper echelon players see as being a destination. Stammer chased the money, Zadorov wanted to be in Boston, Tanev is from Toronto area so signed close to home. Just can’t compete with some of these things players are looking for. We did well in FA and I for one am jacked to see what this group does next year. LGD!!

@@matthewwarnke170 Exactly. Some are fretting Schmid was given up and Vegas has already let that asset go. We will all remember Schmid being a big reason we beat the Rangers in the first round but that was a small body of work. Playing on adrenaline with lots to prove and he came through. But this past year he was mediocre and we can’t let the nostalgia of one playoff series blur the lines. I hope Schmid is picked up elsewhere and he can continue on but I just don’t think he was the tremendous asset some fans feel he was.

Nobody thought Schmid was NJs number 1. Schmid was just abother developmental DISASTER for NJ. The organization ruined him.

Imo he’s moving it in the right direction. I get it, we want to win/we’re passionate about getting great players but the bottom line is Stanley Cup Finals teams are not engineered fully in the offseason. Would it be great to have another star studded player? Sure. Does the team look much much better big picture now vs. last season. No debating that. I would give him a B+ and also he left it open to making more trades if needed and it’s an obvious problem.

To be fair, there aren't many teams that have their top 6 stacked to the gils and also have a strong defense and goaltending. I think Devs fans are being a little whiny. I get it, we all want to win. But let's give it a shot. Last year was last year.

Whiny? For expecting good players in the top 6? You know we could have good players in the top 6 if we weren't paying 6 million for garbage Palat. We could have a 25 year old 30 goal scorer if he weren't traded for a couple months rental of Toffoli. Who was then discarded for scraps at the deadline. Very valid complaints.

Agreed. I don't think there are ANY teams with literally six top-six forwards, not by my standards anyway. Edmonton is close. Toronto has their "big 4." If I'm missing the team with two top lines stacked with all-stars, let me know. The real irony is ... that isn't how you win anyway. Who the hell wants to be Toronto?

@nickadams6537 if you want to live in the past then be my guest. Every GM and person makes decisions that aren't great in hindsight. There's moves that I don't understand or like necessarily, that Fitz has made but overall, personally, I think he's done a very good job. I want to win as much as you or the next guy but complaining about things in the past isn't going to change anything. Fitz isn't going anywhere, for now, so I'd settle in and hope he does the best he can for us. Root for him to make tje right decisions.

Fitz needs a vocabulary lesson. He consistently used "ironic" instead of "coincidence" or "coincidental".

I mean, we do have five out of six top six positions filled. There really was no need to screw up our cap situation for the next few years to try to land one of the big names. We can’t forget that Luke and Nemec need to get paid at some point. Also, if it was right about the offenses, not being a problem, you have to remember we didn’t have Dougie Hamilton Jack shoulder was falling off and Timo’s knees were shot all season yet we were still top half of the league in offense. If they really think they need it, they can still add a top six winger at the deadline.

I think the notion that this team lacks a top 6 forward is garbage. You said it yourself; we have a ton of talent and I personally believe that we made up for Toffoli's goals with the acquisitions of Dillon, Pesce, and Markstrom. We need more beef and although I think Tatar doesn't fit the bill for the top six forward that will fill the net, I think he is exactly what we need. The best lines in hockey don't consist of three snipers and playmakers, they consist of two highly skilled forwards with a guy that is willing to hustle everywhere and drive to the net like a Zach Hyman to McDavid.

@maxhouston298 It is a glaring weakness on this team. We have a Top 4, with a probable and a hopeful in the Top 6. I sincerely hope we embrace winning low scoring games. I think we can thrive if we do that. The G and D are much better.

Some of us remember when the playoffs were a given, and the question was how far, not if we’d make them. Good news is more veterans, (hopefully) more leadership comes with that. Hope the boys upset expectations, and we clinch President’s Trophy and the Cup!

The fans wanted to leave feeling exciting and charged up for the season and I left felting anything but. I think on paper, our team is more similar to what we had two years ago than last year which hopefully means we’re going to achieve success more similar to two years ago as well. Agreed on the top six forward but I am optimistic about Tatar rekindling what he had with Hischier and Mercer especially. I’m not sure if we try the Timo and Jack pairing again if that’s the case but it hasn’t really worked for us. We needed a right handed volume shooter (what Holtz should be) for that last spot more than a fourth winger whose worked with Nico before, but maybe that will become more available later in summer via trade when teams like Washington has to unload $15 mill to get under cap

@reyrage15 I think part of my frustration aside from not getting the Top 6 guy, IS the fact we moved Holtz. I thought when we did that trade, it signified that Fitz was DEFINITELY going to get a Top 6 guy. Hopefully we can get some balanced lines that give us a nice attack. I'm not gonna lie, I do love me some PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY. Jack and Jesper together is MAGIC. Maybe keep those two together, and keep Nico and Timo together?!?

As for Luke's extension, both Power and Sanderson signed for over $8 million AAV and Brock Faber's camp could be looking for $9 million AAV from Minnesota, let's hope Fitz and his powers of persuasion can get him in at under $8 million per season.

I just found it odd that a short while ago he gave a wish list of a goalie, a bottom-6 forward, a bottom-pair d-man, and top-4 d-man, and a top-6 forward (I believe that was the list at least). Yet after the press conference he made it seem like he was content with out top-6 group and wasn't really looking to add there. Huh? He mentioned he was. Weird. Maybe he changed his mind when he couldn't entice the guys he wanted, to come here. Look, I get we could use another winger for the top-6, but I do think it would have been difficult with the Cap room we had left unless we were looking to make a trade to accommodate that winger. That said, I also believe that what we have is more than acceptable for this year considering we're hoping Mercer eventually earns that spot and steps up more. Overall I think that shoring up the net, adding defense with some heft and physicality, and throwing in a bottom-6 player or two with some sand was more vital than trying to squeeze in a top-6 winger.... For now.

He never said that list publicly, but told another GM this and it was regurgitated in the media. 4 outta 5 pieces ain't too bad, but not ideal. That was a lofty list to try to obtain in one summer. It would definitely be tough with the current cap space. I do think we are much improved heading into next season. The goalie, D, and Bottom 6 should be set. Good points. I’m sure we will do a lot of experimenting with lines. From seeing the last few years with the Devils and around the league- I think the Devils truly need speed and size on every line to be as effective as possible with their identity and create a balance throughout. Hughes really struggles with the physicality- id be more comfortable with Cotter because of his speed plus the physicality over a smaller Tatar. He does have good hands as well, he could be a great powerforward line 2 guy, hopefully can make a home out front like a Hyman. I like Bratt-Hischier-Meier as our every night line one. I also think Mercer needs to be top 6 to be as effective as possible (with Nico or Jack). I’d like us to run heavier minutes for our top 6, but third and fourth lines very reversible. I like MacDermid in the lineup, just to play a few shifts a night when needed, just to help set the tone. I think we will be better with him in lineup but basically rotate 5 bottom 6 guys for the most part, plugging MacDermid in when needed. We have the quality there to run a system like that. Two line 3’s vs a typical third and fourth line will make us harder to match up against. Bratt-Hischier-Meier Cotter-Hughes-Mercer Palat-Lazar-Noesen MacDermid-Haula-Tatar Siegenthaler-Hamilton Hughes-Pesce Dillon-Nemec (Kovacevic-Foote-Bastian) Love the balance of this and allowing our skill guys to have the insulation around them

Personally, I feel okayish with our attack. I hoped we would do a bit better on defense with some more physical players such as Zadorov. It didn't happen. It's okay. Pesce is a good addition, Dillon is a good addition. I know you, Ace, wanted Katchuk. I told you I don't see it happening. Not that I didn't want it to happen. I just thought it was not within what the team wanted to actually do. But overall, it is a better team. It is a playoff bound team. I personally give a good chance to get even to the finals if not many major injuries occur.

The old school fans who experienced Cups and demand excellent, and then the newer fans who are just happy to be in the playoffs. It is very interesting for sure. I am an old school fan and want us to return to excellence. I think I am pretty fair with Fitz. There are MANYYYYYYY here who are WAYYYYY harsher than I am

At least we know Fitz obviously cares and wants to win, and I am very happy with our upgrades but Im a little disappointed we didn't add that extra o guy but whatever, im still pumped. Were we spoiled with the old days and Martys era? Sure, but there is no reason to want to attain something like that again or expect that level of success again. Being complacent and happy with striving for and just making the playoffs is something for the Kraken. We used to have the mentality of franchises like the Bruins, Penguins, 90s/2000s R.Wings, lightning, etc. The marketing, the team of as of recent (hopefully not now), and just some of the general vibe has felt soft and a little weak as of late. Or im just an old nutty fan lol

I am sooooo fortunate to have grown up with the era of New Jersey Devils hockey that I did. Our offense doesn't look nearly as awesome as it did this time last year when we still had Holtz and traded for Tyler Toffoli and I too am a bit disappointed we couldn't add a true top-six forward but there was only so much money to go around. It's too bad we still don't have a true 3C following Mikey McLeod's leave of absence but we'll have to make do with what we have. We might lack some firepower but we should be a better, more balanced, well-rounded team. Fitz said he was confident about this group but he said he was also confident heading into last season and that ended up backfiring on him horribly. Hopefully everybody in this organization learned a lesson after this past year. The Meh-tro just isn't that strong so if we can stay relatively healthy and if our guys play to their capabilities, a 100-point season and a top-three finish in the division shouldn't be asking too much.

@vmeglis70 Most reporters shy away from holding Fitz to the fire. Once in a while he will get a question that isn't a complete softball. But for the most part, they're all softballs. Brady is his cousin. I would have died if someone asked about him. I will still hold out hope we land him one day. I’m really happy with what we have done so far this offseason. What we lost in the top 6 I think we gained in the bottom 6. If injuries were to happen we’re much better position this year than last with depth. We do have room to get a top 6 guy at the deadline if needed. X factor this year is obviously going to be Mercer and I think he’s going to be able to put us over the top if he can produce the way, we know his capable of. New culture and identity is going to be established with this team with all the moves we made. They might not be the flashy guys but give Fitz credit for being in the running for the the flashy guys and he also didn’t give out any stupid contracts to one of them that will hang up extensions in the future with our young core coming up. Another big plus I think not many people are talking about is how the rest of the division outside of Washington and Columbus have either stayed the same or gotten worse during this FA period. I have not fully come around with Fitz just yet but I have to give credit when due and he did what he said he was going to do. With all the extra beef I think our stars will be playing with a lot more confidence and security this season knowing someone is going to pay immediately if someone comes for their head. I do believe if these guys can come together and Keefe establishes lines that work early on there’s no reason this team on paper can’t get to the cup this year. My prediction would be 103 points this season. As always thank you for all the content and giving us an amazing platform to vocalize amongst each other. @mattjones1460 I agree for the most part, but losing in the Top 6 is never ideal. The bottom 6 is much improved for sure. If any of the big guns get injured we are going to be in trouble again. It seems you run a moderate course toward the GM, between Joe and Fitgerald’s staunch supporters. @robertlamkin6464 Thanks! The Devils got a 2nd and 3rd Round pick for Toffoli. I am in the middle I would say of the Fitz haters and Fitz lovers. Overall he did a pretty good job this offseason. Interesting! I think Daws may have been adequate, but I think Markstrom is better right now. Fitz wasn't going to gamble on the goalie position, as he knows he took a TON of criticism for this very thing last year

There's 4 good offensive forwards on the roster. I won't relax. I'm well aware of the fact that Palat, Mercer, Tatar all suck.These are the guys that will be masquerading as top 6 forwards. It's unacceptable. Very poor work by Fitz.

@@nickadams6537 FLA just won a cup with 4 good offensive players and 3-4 insulary middle 6 guys. The problem for this team has been goaltending and defense, both of which were greatly overhauled in the correct direction. It was a slump of a season after a year of finishing 3rd in the league which no one had on their bingo card. If not for 2022-2023, this would have been the year the winning window would have opened up. We were spoiled finishing 3rd in the league, and A LOT of uninformed fans are showing it. This is a process and a business of keeping the team young, balanced, experienced, and hard to play against while also not mortgaging the future. Again, relax.

@@runninwiththedevilsI’ll say it again… without the season they had in 22-23, no one would feel that way right now. Our window opened early and then got slammed shut with injuries and no saves. It just opened, and the young core with worse pieces around them have already proven they can make playoffs and win a round. Now they have better and bigger guys to chip in where it counts. A team isn’t going to be a “cup contender” without at least making a deep run for it (or at least have some players who know what that’s like) first. People are just butt hurt because they brainwashed themselves into thinking Brady was an immediate possibility. Now because of that, nothing will be good enough.

@codyk458 I would be just as mad. HOWEVER, 22-23 DID HAPPEN! The entire core is still here! The window did not "open early". This is propaganda BS that people are buying into. We are over last year's calamity. Now we are starting a new season. Why should the expectations not be to be similar to that 22-23 team?!? I would have loved Brady. But I would have been happy with much less. Just better than Tatar....I don't think that is asking for too much

Ace, love you, but I think you're being too negative here. 22-23 was great, but players performed out of their minds then 23-24 was a humbling wake up call that shed light on the glaring weaknesses, not to mention the injury bug that ravaged our team. As for the new moves: Coaching? Addressed. Goaltending? Addressed. Defense? Addressed. Bottom 6 depth? Addressed. Overall toughness and grit? Addressed. I'd argue we have 4 undisputed top 6 players (Nico, Bratt, Jack, Timo), 1 top 6 ceiling player (Mercer, when with higher skilled players), and 1 complimentary piece (Tatar) The lack of a top 6 addition sucks when looking at just this upcoming season, but if we need to pay Mercer, Luke, & Nemec then money needs to be free to make those contracts happen and the hyperfocus on Top 6 is only going to blind everyone to how much the team improved overall. As for Fitz' comments on needing to get there, I see no problem with that. After 22-23 everyone was planning the '24 cup parade, but then the unpredictable in the form of injuries and season long slumps happened, so the next logical move should be to get back into the dance. I think the Devils finish with 280+ goals for (yes, even without Toffoli),

I agree on your assessment of the Top 6. At worst case, I would have liked to see another "Top 6 Ceiling Player" vs. a complimentary add in Tatar. Jack was the healthiest he's been so far in his career, there were no notable injuries (of length or impact player), and Vanecek won 30 games for the first time since Marty. The core pieces are still here, but this time they have a stronger supporting cast so I expect closer to a 22-23 performance. This is a team who can absolutely make noise in the playoffs and I'd expect an ECF appearance. A cup would obviously be incredible, but how often do teams go from not making the playoffs to winning the cup? Think this season will still be special!

I disagree on this years top 6 being worse. Mercer has a chance to prove he is top 6. And if you look at how Tatar played 2 years ago in the top 6 im not worried. I think D and goaltending will be alot better this year. I agree with TF that im not worried about scoring with this group at all. D and goaltending was the issue last year. They should be so much better

@LitlBUBS The top 6 is inarguable worse. We swapped out Toffoli for Tatar. That is a downgrade. I am hopeful that Tatar can be serviceable in this role. I agree the D and goaltending will be lightyears better. Overall I think the team is and will be much improved. LET'S GO DEVILS!!!

i am somewhat disappointed in free agency, just because we didnt get the top 6 guy, but i will say this... the way id play it is to grab a guy at or around the deadline that is a really good top 6 guy and have another team retain salary, given where the devils were at before free agency, id rather spend money in free agency on defense over offense, and this is what fitzy did, no this doesnt necessarily help us up front for game 1 or even game 41 of the season but we do have enough on this team to put ourselves into a playoff spot by the deadline, and thats what really matters as far as that is concerned. the big question is will he address that top 6 in the middle of the season? i personally have my doubts on that given what he said in the press conference but we will see. i will continue by saying this team is built for war, cotter alone if he was on the devils last season with as many hits as he got last season hed be the franchise record holder for most hits by a player in a single season, which right now is held by pickles, and then you get to the other big bodies we got that like to hit, and are also good at blocking shots, and containing other teams top players, and playing that grind'm up and spit'm out type of game, and then we get to the goalies which are substantially better than anything weve had in a very long time, whether anyone wants to admit it or not this team is built for war. the pieces are there for a really good season that i think everyone would call a success. but if i had to give a prediction of how the season will be, i can see this team being in a playoff spot all season long, as is. i dont know if i see us at #1 in the division but we will be up there. as long as keefe does his job and utlizes this team correctly.

Today just seemed very complacent IMO, and many others' as well. It did seem totally defeatist. I think there is a middle ground that savvier GM's would have walked.

Apparently if you are a player agent, all you have to do is call Tom and he gets so excited that you called that he will sign your client. Palat's agent called and Tommy wet himself with excitement and signed him. Sounds like he can't believe people want to come play in Newark. 😂 You are correct, he needs to stop doing press conferences and hire a PR person. Love the principals office comparison 😀

Know what you mean about the Blue Skirt fans, back in the 80’s the games were hella violent (in the stands) no smart phones and social media to document the madness of the Patrick division days. Mel Bridgman was the Devils captain at the time, GM was Max McNab, his son Peter was a forward on the team and played without a helmet. Chico was the man in net… had a life size poster of Chico in his gear, was a giveaway sponsored by some Instant oats or what not… wish still had that…loved the Brendan Byrne arena and hitting 16W, in the swamp all lit up glowing white at night; growing up seen a ton of killer metal/Rock concerts there… was genuinely sad when heard they were moving to Newark.

I expected nothing more from Fitz during the press conf. He's covering his ass by being coy about playoffs and focusing on "getting there". I'm not ecstatic but not ready to blow a blood vessel like Joe S. (Love your enthusiasm Joe, you and Ace are wonderfully passionate about this franchise) , hence why I'm here all the time. LOL. Overall I feel "OK" . There were certainly missed opportunities but with HBSE calling the shots ultimately, not surprised by the final decisions. That said, I do believe we have a much improved team compared to this time last year and should at least get to 2nd round of playoffs like in 22/23 but off course that's not enough. I truly believe Dawson Mercer set back last year was because of the arrival of torffilo. Now that there is a spot on the top six Mercer should return to the good two ways forward that he can be. Instead of a top 6 forward I would of preferred a better upgrade to the 3rd and fourth line center position to replace mcloud

We can still trade for a top 6 forward. I think you’re focusing too much on the fire power in the top 6 instead of what a team that wins needs and that’s a full depth squad. I think we need to take tiffoli from last season as an example- yes, he did lead the team in goals but where did that get us? I think the panthers proved what a roster should look like and we’ve built ourselves towards that ideal. We 100% already have a roster to score 2+ goals on any given night and now we have the defense to keep the puck out of our net. We do have enough offense to win games. You also have to consider our blue line offense. Dougie, luke, and nemec all have a great two way game. That being said only thinking about top 6 fire power can hurt us if we arent careful with who we sign. We NEED to make the playoffs but to WIN in the playoffs we need a defensive group that protects Markstrom. Be happy we made the moves we made and understand that we can still make a move to trade for a top 6 guy before the deadline if we feel we can win it all this year

I think he approach to saying one step at a time to start by making the playoffs is a safety net, I mean if he said we were going all the way this year and they fell short he would get roasted. Like with his comment on Heavier, bigger and more violent. A lot of us disagree that that statement describes this team right now and some of us while we agree the team is better it DOES NOT fit his description. He is playing it safe. Now do I feel they are going all the way this year? It could happen but I'm not sure that is how it will play out. But I think as they stand today this is the best Devils team we have seen in a while.

Have to take issue with your comment again - Fitz was correct when he said most teams don't have six top-six guys. You can't be literal minded about the term "top-six forwards." We have four such forwards: Jack, Bratt, Meier, and Hischier. Maybe you and me have a different definition, but those should be top-6 forwards by ANY definition. If ANY of those guys went to ANY other team, they'd be on the top two lines. Period. Also: name one team in the league that played this past year with six top-six forwards. Not even Edmonton had that. Not Toronto. Freaking Nashville doesn't even have that right now, after adding Stammer and Marchessault. Stop wallowing about the top-six forward. Look at how Florida is built and how they won. It wasn't with an overabundance of top-six forwards.

Tatar is a pretender, let's call it what it is. I didn't need a superstar, but it could have and should have been better than Tatar. He got us a goalie and amazing D that make it so we don’t need 6 superstars up top to win and win a lot. How would you have addressed all of our needs and also grabbed a 40+ scorer while staying under the cap? The whole we need a another winger thing mattered when we had bums in net and soft D. It doesn’t matter as much now.

@@runninwiththedevils that’s the thing. We got a goalie for 2 years to do just that. Our core needs to earn their contracts and if they do (and stay healthy) we will be dangerous in this lineup. The big fish chose Nashville. After that it was all a gamble. Might as well go with a guy who played well with Nico when he was here rather than roll the dice on Tarasenko etc. or trade away good prospects when the issue won’t be offense with a real goalie and real D.

The ceiling for this current roster is 1st round playoff exit. The forward group as a whole isn't nearly good enough.Let's stop pretending Tatar is worth anything. That was a nothing signing. So our top lines will probably be Meier Hischier Mercer Tatar Hughes Bratt Palat Haula Noesen Cotter Lazar Bastian Few things. Why not sign Tarasenko instead of Tatar? or even Atkinson both would have been better on Hughes wing Beefing up the lineup is one thing but nobody on this team was willing to stick up for each other last year which was gross to watch. I love how Luke was allowed to be dog shit for a lot of last year but never got the same hate that Holtz did. If Foote is not in the bottom 6 as an everyday player he needs to be traded because its a waste of another young forward. If he does make the bottom six and bumps Bastian out, Bastian needs to be traded his money is a lot to be not playing on the regular. I like MacDermid but again paying a guy over a million to fight Rempe 4 times a year seems like a waste of cash. This team if healthy will still make the playoffs in my opinion but in no way is this a team ready to compete for a cup. This forward group is 2 injuries away from missing the playoffs. I think Fitz could have made better moves in free agency and the draft but clearly the people pulling his strings seem to think otherwise.

Tatar is beyond washed up he couldn’t even hack it playing with McKinnon. I don’t blame him for not giving the extra years to Stamkos and marsh those contracts won’t age well just like palat. I wish he did get more creative signing high upside cheaper guys like nylander.

We absolutely do NOT have a top 6. Tarasenko would have been a much better fit than Tatar. I am not happy with making the playoffs...I want to be the Yankees of hockey! Any year we Don't win the cup is a loser year. Noesen scored almost all of his goals on the PP last year.

I think devil fans are extremely picky when it comes to “top 6 forwards”. Almost every cup winning team has 4 legit stars with complimentary players. You say it’s less than ideal but it’s very common. Look at teams like Edmonton Vegas Colorado Tampa it’s all very similar forward makeup.

If I’m the devils I run Meier-Hughes-Mercer Palat-nico- bratt If palat can be over a half ppg and give the same defensive results he gave last season than that’s a huge W. Also we have gritsyuk coming over later this season which is another wild card to think about for the top 9.

D- his grade to date. These signings and trades are years late as most are too old to matter. Geriatric goalies and NO defense. What could go wrong. Harder to play against ? Tag line and nothing more. This team is as weak as wet tissue paper. Which is what the league will use the Devils for again.

I do think we will be harder to play against. Noesen and Cotter are two nasty guys in our bottom 6. Our defense also got more experienced and much bigger. I am hoping for the best. Hey totally backed away from top 6 forward. He had that on his list and now he acts like he didnt. I dont care for his spin and yeah, he lowered expectations on this presser. The NHL shouldn't be a developmental league. So, if he felt Holtz should of spent more time in the AHL, then why did he let Ruff nail him to a seat in the owners box for good periods of time. His commentary on Scmid was pretty weak when this kid was touted as the next coming. Hope isnt a plan. HIs commentary on Centers was weak, as was most of his presser. Im really not impressed with this guy and all this in fitz we trust, stuff is gone. If he is playing down everything and not having expectations for playoffs then why go for a 2 year bandaid at goal? He could of just rode it out with Jake Allen and sign KK for a year prove it deal. His lack of commitment to Mercer was discouraging. I always felt to be good in the NHL you have to be strong up the middle, just like baseball. I dont know, Im starting to think Fitz is bipolar or something. He definitely seemed subdued today. I am hoping for the best next season. I did find it funny when he said people "choose NJ". The came here because you offered the most money and best terms, lmao. Get real bud. The Devils are 3-5 years away from a legit Cup shot. It’s a journey. Nice progress this off season but any young team needs to lose different ways in the playoffs before they can win deep into the playoffs. They will live and learn. How many seasons that takes is unknown but I’m going with above…….all while plenty of players come and go. That’s the rub when our core all started so young at the same time. Today, the Devils are a bubble team. 3 teams in division are still better.

Only one team wins every year and they may NEVER win given the dynamic, non-playoff-friendly players we so rely on. Pay attention to the make up of the teams that make it through that grind. The Devils are not one of them but are taking steps. Yes, I’m ok with that given the deep deep hole this organization was in. I appreciate the possibilities but it’s still a few seasons away, if ever. It’s a minor damn miracle to win a Cup.

I, for one, can’t picture Nico raising a Cup over his head. Even you said it yourself but differently. The Devils team that might win a Cup will look very different than this team…….. I guarantee you that. Look back at the Devils Cup winners and other Cup winners rosters. Strength, maturity, and character reign. These Devils are an upper mid pack team. That’s all. Last year hockey analysts said the Devs had a good chance on winning the cup but with all the injures, goalie situation, and rookies in the line up it was a tall order. But before you win the cup you have to get to the dance first.
