Nixon before resignation and full speech, August 8, 1974

Moments before he goes on-air to resign as President of the United States, Richard Nixon is calm and collected, joking with staff as they set up the pool feed. "Good evening. This is the 37th time I have spoken to you from this office, where so many decisions have been made that shaped the history of this nation."

My Dad, Willis Webster, was the audio man from CBS for this event. He had told me about the prep for Nixon's resignation, and some of what Nixon said, but it's so cool to watch and listen to this, knowing my dad was doing the sound.

It's not like that anymore, unfortunately. If you lose an election, they will investigate you and sabotage your presidency. Hillary Clinton was involved in the Watergate hearings. You'd think she would have listened to his speech. But no, blind person ambition "trumps" everything else.

feeling empathy for someone who caused his own undoing is normal, just remember not to feel bad. President Nixon knew how much power he had, how much trust the american ppl had in him, and he chose to corrupt that trust in order to keep being the president. A man who would literally do ANYTHING to remain president, Including violating our very own constitution he is binded by, just like the rest of us. When it mattered most, he faltered as a man, as a president. He lied to the entire country for YEARS, his deserves everything bad that came from this.

I mean I might have because I'm sure my parents must have watched but I'm definitely too young to remember watching it on TV. Every year on my birthday I hear about Nixon & Watergate & I've read the newspaper articles & learned about it in History class but I've never watched the video. So, I'm thankful to the person who put this on their channel. Reading about history isn't the same as watching it, at least in my opinion of course.

It was a bipartisan grassroots swell that even Rs couldn't afford to ignore. Now, despite the climate crisis, water system failures, pipeline leaks, it's hardly a top 10 issue for everyday folks because middle class/lower class wages have stagnated so badly, not to mention racism, foreign threats, police brutality, campaign reform, civil rights, etc. Oh, and the nitwit currently in the office of president stressing us all the hell out day after day.

Before you write me off as a Republican Apologist, I feel it necessary to mention that I arive at these conclusions despite being a Yellow Dog Democrat. If I can see the virtue on display in this historic speech, how much more evident such virtue must be to those who do not view Republicans with an ingrown and long-fostered bias against them. I suspect Nixon went to his grave with a tenacious conviction that he had been persecuted. But I have to admit that, in this speech at least, he ended by showing a lot of grace and humility.

Vintage Roze Well stated. Nixon was on his game that evening. He absolutely did not “nearly lose his temper” here. He was about to resign the Presidency, and Richard Nixon was a lot of things, but he wasn’t a weak man. You’re seeing incredible strength here and his usual commanding presence. I think it’s just depressing as hell that Americans have zero intellectual curiosity in seeking out the truth in history. I have spent many years and a lot of money researching Richard Nixon, who was just a profoundly fascinating President. The commenter obviously was reverting to the longtime media-driven caricature of Richard Nixon. Sadly, seeking out the truth takes effort - there’s no app for that. 🙄

One huge difference between then and now is that at least Nixon had a threshold of shame. He realized he went well beyond the norms of ethical behavior, and in the end did the right thing. Today, there seems to be absolutely no shame. Anything goes, and not only do the perpetrators fail to take responsibility for their actions, their supporters are so mindless they will not condemn blatant dishonesty, hypocrisy, criminality, and treasonous acts.

Being I was in Southern California which was big Nixon territory--because this was where he was from originally--The reaction to McGovern was of course not too warm LOL! Anyway, over the years and a Masters degree in political science and a just concluded 30 year career in government service later, I must say I have developed A respect for Richard Nixon. Show me of his domestic policies were very liberal, and internationally he opened up China, and laid the groundwork for peace in Vietnam. Nixon to me now is a flawed but very honorable man.

I know I joked a lot when I knew I was waiting for my father to get home and correct me for some misdeed I would joke with my siblings to demonstrate that I was calm and not afraid all the while I was terrified of the impending correction by my father that would shortly pursue.

Wow, he was fairly composed. He was cracking jokes to ease the tension and nervousness. Pres Nixon became a broken man after this. I was 2 when he resigned, my parents remembered this and cried watching this. Nixon was actually a good President but Watergate scandal brought him down.

As flawed as Nixon was even I can admit that he is probably one of the greatest attorney's our country has seen and far and away the most intelligent president we have ever had. It really is fascinating to watch the pre-speech Nixon laughing and joking around. History has begun to mythologize him into this absolute force of evil, but you realize that he was just a guy. Every President is just a guy. It really makes me want to see Washington (a man who is basically 100% myth and 0% person to all of us) in a similar situation. Or any President really. We don't think of these people as humans.

Not a calm bone in his body in the intro. Fidgeting, nonstop joking and laughing, looking around side to side, the somberness he falls into when he begins reading the speech and sends everybody out. I almost feel bad for the guy, preparing to end his professional life and ruin his reputation around the world. This guy's reputation was everything to him and boy did he sure did kill that.

No doubt. But the sad part is, he got in trouble not for the break in, which he had very little to do with if at all, but with covering it up. If you think about it, that really wasn't that bad if you compare it to something like Iran-Contra with Reagan. Frankly I consider the latter to be much more impeachment worthy.
