At 17, I had a 1965 Chevelle 4 speed 327, because my father was a Chevrolet dealer. The shifter seemed flimsy and the 2-3 throw seemed longer than with a Hurst. I felt safe power-shifting my friends '65 442, but not with the Chevy. I always cheated a litte by lifting my foot a little between shifts. (Please don't tell anyone.) My friends thought I was good, but I'm sure I my foot woud have tremors at a drag strip. It was my father's car. I had a friend who was a successful contractor who only drag-raced El Caminos. He was a strong man, and he'd have this same objective, except he'd let his left foot 'slip' off the clutch, so it would 'pop back.' I don't know how good this way was, but the 'car' would go sideways between 1-2 and 2-3.

The brakes are fine and it's a routine. OK. But why would I want the pedal to go almost to the floor, and why would I WANT to be pumping the pedal all the time? And I'm speaking as a person who has driven stickshift drag cars; I'd sure want that pedal high and hard, no wasted motion all the way to the floor, and pumping on shutdown, NO!
@blownonfuel
6 жыл бұрын
janj0n The pumping is to build brake line pressure for the burnout. If you take a close look you can see him pump the brakes then press the button on the switch on the shift knob. That is the linelock, it keeps the front brakes locked until you release the button. Pretty much everything up to pro mods use this technique.

Jim Piver I'm an old stick shift racer, oddly enough my 69 ROAD RUNNER ran close to his guys time...10:69......his breaks suck...no body has time to pump the peddle....pumping the breaks at 125 mph is so wrong.....pumping the peddle for setting the LINE LOCK wrong I too was my own MECHANIC on my bird.....let the teck guy drive that car around the pits and he WOULD not pass the car! SO I too call it BULL.....

It has a linelock. D'ya even know what that is, what it's for or how it works? Jesus Christ help you--and yer awful gramma an' spelin' too..

Kiloilio are you talking to me? Yeah, I know what a line lock is and has no relation with my brake comment. I merely stated that the brake pedal is low. I hope you realize you don’t use a line lock at the end of a run. If YOU do, please make sure to share that video so we can get a good laugh.

@@donaldpowers5557 LINE LOC, ever hear of it?
The brakes are fine and it's a routine. OK. But why would I want the pedal to go almost to the floor, and why would I WANT to be pumping the pedal all the time? And I'm speaking as a person who has driven stickshift drag cars; I'd sure want that pedal high and hard, no wasted motion all the way to the floor, and pumping on shutdown, NO!

janj0n The pumping is to build brake line pressure for the burnout. If you take a close look you can see him pump the brakes then press the button on the switch on the shift knob. That is the linelock, it keeps the front brakes locked until you release the button. Pretty much everything up to pro mods use this technique.

You're an idiot.
Clutch pedal works,,,, brakes maybe not so good... please fix for safety of everyone !!!
That brake pedal looks a bit sketchy....
Sweet ride. Great driving. But those brakes need some SERIOUS attention. He's not pumping them to do the burn out. There just plain isnt any brake pressure. YIKES! If he needed the brakes on the first pump he'd be screwed.

its line lock to do a burnout, look in the comments
Ya! Brakes are over rated!! lol
Fix your brakes
What about fixing those brakes!
So how and why do you intentionally set up a brake system so soggy? Master cylinder bore way too small maybe? And leave it like that for 42 years? The only mechanic needs a little assistance from a better one, IMO. No need for training on shifting, I totally agree.
