This "tutorial" was absolutely spot on, I had the exact issue, 2013 Pathfinder, 106K miles, I watched the video, popped the hood, and tapped the relay pod with my finger and jarred the relay, lights went off; and I'll replace the relay this week, it saved me pulling the battery and all the reprogramming! I hope to monitor and also see if it corrects the acceleration behavior issue. Well done !

Awsome!! Thanks for thr info . I did change my break sensor because Nissan said that was the problem. They tried to charge me $250 on a $20 sensor. Yea i did it my self. I did notice ny car nor accelerating the other day, thinking something is wrong with the transmition and i also saw my break lights stay on the other day when i was out thr car. .. Now this makes sence. Thanks alot for the info. 👍🏼

thank you for this video. i was able to fix my moms car just in the nick of time before she took it to her unscrupulous mechanic. crazy knowing that she just told me about her problem and that she has been driving with the surging problem for a month. no trouble codes hence no worries for her even though this could cause huge issues down the road. brake lights staying on was the nail on the coffin, your video 100% solution. brake relay cost me $24.99 at autozone part #20279

We’ve taken our 2014 Nissan Pathfinder at least 6 times to the dealer because of loss of power when accelerating from a stop only for them test drive it and tell us nothing is wrong. Today the break lights failed to turn off. Thank you so much for this video! My mom was stressing about how the battery would run out, but luckily I found this video. So easy to follow! Thank you!

martha hernandez super sorry for the late reply, but yes, it did. Even after we removed it and place it back, it began working fine, but we ended up replacing it all the same. Better to be safe than sorry.

Midnight Mechanics you the man! We have a 2013 Pathfinder that’s been losing acceleration after a stop. We would literally stop at a light or stop sign and then accelerate then all of a sudden it would bog down like we were running out of gas, not wanting to accelerate. Would have to pull over and turn the car off and restart the car and go. But man, we were on the verge of selling it but found your video on the relay switch. Just picked one up today at NAPA Auto Parts for $34 and installed it. I’ll do a follow up here in a few weeks. Thanks man!

Dude you just fixed my problem. My damn brake light wouldnt go off even after car was off. Plus I noticed it wasnt accelerating sometime. Told dealer and they said it was fine. Watched your video and problem solved. Going to go buy a new one.

Just bought a 2013 Pathfinder last week and this problem popped up after driving it about 100 miles (122,900 miles on the odometer). Brake lights staying on, delay in accelerator, chattering/hesitating at speeds less than 25miles per hr and surging after a stop. It's at my mechanic right now. We'll see if he comes up with this. If not, I'll do it myself! THANK YOU!!!

Midknight Mechanics it’s failing to accelerate from a complete stop or most of the time when I press on the brake. The brake light stays on when the vehicle is completely shut off.

Midknight Mechanics no lurching. No vibration. Just stalling and brake light stays on sometimes. The hesitation to accelerate is the more frequent issue.

How can I increase the power on the engine on my 2014 Nissan pathfinder, when I drive on little bit of up hill highway car don't accelerate as it should be! Sims like no power on the engine, I have to padel hard to accelerate.....

I haven't noticed my brake lights staying on but my car (2015 Nissan PF) has done this now the past 2 days every time I drive. Yesterday it scared the crap out ofe as I had my daughter in the car. It only does it after I have applied the breaks though, so I am thinking this is the problem. But after it starts driving ok the Traction light will come on the dash. Google said to check my brake fluid and that's perfectly fine. I really hope this does the trick as I hate the dealership. They want to charge an arm and leg.

Wish I had found this before the throttle switch and TPS replacement.

Nissan should have done a safety recall on this, but it only happens when enough customers complain of the same issue. I feel bad for every Pathfinder owner that found out the hard way.

Is it the same for the navara? Because my ute does the same thing

Update so I did some digging turns out there is a recall on it. Fixed for free!

I got my part from Nissan for $48 !

Ive just gone to nissan genuine parts and got the exact same relay switch, prior to this i got the mechanic to scan it and it came up with the brake light switch as an error , so we changed it to a brand new one and off i went, but not lont after the brake lights still stayed on and the car would struggle to accelerate. I came across this video and went back and got a replacement Relay switch this time, Will let you guys know how i go. Cheers

Hi thank you for posting!! I replaced my brake relay after I noticed my brake lights were staying on and ended up killing my battery. This will fix the delayed acceleration problem?? It usually only does it after idling for like 5-15 mins or so then it delays and bucks when I try to go again. I ended up having to replace my battery, don’t know if that’s related. Also my car doesn’t shift I have to use the manual release to shift it. I thought for some reason it was related to relay but it didn’t fix that issue. Do you have any idea what that could be?

So 87Cakes most likely that is one of 2 things- the brake switch located down near the floor attached to the rod that holds the pedal, or the shift lock solenoid which is located under the center console. The brake switch tells the solenoid when you let you be able to shift. I'm surprised the brake relay didnt fix this since it's part of the system, but still a separate component.

I don't John, but did you notice if your brake lights are staying on or your battery is going flat after sitting overnight? (Also this issues doesn't cause any check engine light)

@@MidknightMechanics I haven't noticed anything with the battery. I just told my wife I'm going to have to drive behind her to see if they stay on while she accelerates. I just noticed how going from a stop how long it takes to get up to speed, a good 3-4 seconds before it hits some speed, and by then rpms are going way up to 4000.

My girlfriend has a 2013 pathfinder and has complained about 2 of the 3 issues mentioned in this clip. No acceleration (usually when traveling uphill), and surging or shaking as if to be a transmission issue. I have personally experienced the surging/shaking but not the uphill issue nor have I noticed any brake lights staying on. Do you believe the issue would still be related to a faulty relay?

Uphill? No uphill issues mentioned but I will bet you anything- same relay issue as my video, yours just hasn't 100% failed yet. Some parts stores even carry this relay; I really appreciate the feedback so if that doesn't fix it- I want to pay you via PayPal for the relay, and i will keep helping you with troubleshooting.

So I gave this a shot and installed a new relay. This made not change to the vehicles behavior. We recently took the vehicle to a local transmission shop assuming the problem was with the transmission. He stated that he drove the vehicle for 2 days and never felt anything. No surging under acceleration nothing. I drove the vehicle home and there was nothing. About a week later the surging started again but it has not been anything like before. Before it was very violent until to let off the accelerator. Now it is mild and nowhere near as violent but still irritatingly noticeable.

Is this for pathfinders only I have a similar problem with my Altima (automatic) at random times it will have a delay when accelerating from a stop

RC since the electronics are often shared across the model range, it could easily have effected your Altima, but I haven't heard of it just yet. Everyone that has commented here, has seen it in their Pathfinders. Check to see if your fuse box is in the same location, and looks the same, as I show here in my video.

Angel not every dealership is aware of this very common issue just yet, I highly doubt its your brakes which. Here is how to test, the same relay is used many times. Take the relay out of the fuse Box right behind the left headlight for the trailer/towing options, And follow my video using that spare relay. Then see if the symptoms are gone.

Sure can. Some of my other commenters here also didn't have the brake lights staying on, but had the surge from a stop sign or red light.

Just bought a Nissan pathfinder 2014 96,000 miles on it and not even a week after purchasing I'm having trouble with it...not sure what's wrong with it if someone can help me out i would greatly appreciate it.. when I'm slowing down the car down shifts I can feel it a hair harder then most vehicles. But the main issue is that when I am going slow and let off of the gas, let's say to turn or for traffic issues the car almost hiccups. My rpm gage goes down and right back up very quickly almost as if you heart skipped a beat...im really hoping it's not a transmission issue. Even tho it sounds like a possibility I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions or advice for me thank you.

Chris sorry to hear this. I hate to say it, but this newest Pathfinder like yours has lots of issues. No joke, this past weekend I replaced rear brake pads for the 3rd time (several Nissans chew through rear pads fast) and a right side window regulator on one with only 99,344 miles since the window fell inside the door when the cable snapped. The CVT transmission has lots of documented issues on the internet from owners. Take a look at yours and see if you can tell if the radiator was replaced. I say this because when it fails, coolant mixes with transmission fluid, and the trans sucks in coolant (doing horrible damage inside the trans). See if it's shiny, new black plastic or has an aftermarket label on it. Also, have someone help you and see if the brake lights are staying on for a few seconds AFTER someone releases the brake pedal. If you are having the jerky, hiccup, delay of acceleration after a stop, then my video here applies.

Is surging the same as sputtering?

Not usually Josh. Sputtering is usually fuel, spark or air related (almost the same as misfiring). But surging is usually electronic, or transmission related. In this example with the bad relay, it was electronic related where the ECU couldn't tell the brakes had been disengaged, because the relay was sticking in the on position.

Is there a different location that the relay could be.

First things first- check your oil level from the dipstick.
