@Seattlecarnut Thanks. I'm not sure if this particular model is the only one with a 5 speed column shift gearbox, but most other cars with column shifters where I live have only 4 speed boxes. In Singapore this exact model, also used as a taxi, has a floor-mounted 5 speed instead.
@maculifrons that's because they drive on the left side of the road. left side right drive. right side left drive. simple concept!
@Seattlecarnut I do indeed double-clutch most of the time - I have been practicing this technique for the last 3 years because it was necessary when I took the test for a truck licence, and from what I've heard it is supposedly good for the transmission in older cars.
@Seattlecarnut Column shift manual transmissions are indeed rare nowadays, but used to be standard on all taxis in Hong Kong as recent as 10 years ago. Today most taxis in Hong Kong are automatic but still have column shifters. This car does have synchromesh on all the forward gears.
@Seattlecarnut That's true, and it can be dangerous in a place like Hong Kong where roads are more narrow and traffic sometimes heavy.
@peorthass This car is fitted with a TD25 engine.
there are lots of vehicles with 4 and 5 speed column shift...the old Datsun 620 and 720 pickups as well as the Nissan d21 hardbody trucks and Nissan caravan mini bus,Nissan cedrics and glorias, Toyota hilux and hiace vans, old mazda b series and ford courier pickups, Nissan vanette, Isuzu pickups, old Mercedes benz cars...there's lots of em

@Seattlecarnut I'm in Hong Kong and these videos were taken mostly around the rural New Territories where the roads are much clearer than downtown. So far these are the only videos taken.
More cars should have column shift, whether it be manual or automatic. Saves space, looks better, easier to reach...
Very Nice
@Seattlecarnut These vids were uploaded for a couple of friends who were curious about the car. I might take some more (or rather usually get a friend to take the video) if I happen to drive along a particularly unusual or scenic road
5-speed column shift? The only ones I'm familiar with are 3-speed.
@Seattlecarnut I've had this car since last September, and I'm guessing this was taken around last September or October.
@Seattlecarnut Yes, this was during the second test drive before I bought it. The other video taken on the long highway was taken when I had already bought it.
This has to be one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. Any chance anything with the 5spd was ever available in the usa?

sona11111111 They aren't very common it was more of a Japanese thing.
@Seattlecarnut I use it both for personal/family transport and sometimes in the course of my work. I like it a lot, and won't trade it away for something newer at this moment. It can pick up fast but its gearing and suspension are not meant for exciting performance, but still it is relaxing and comfortable to drive, and great for highways, especially since speed limits here aren't all that high.
Haha the steering wheel is on the wrong side XD
