    Pay attention to the position of the compressor when removing the old alt. Mine was sitting on the hose and it was propping it up a little too high and the weight of the alternator made it hell for me to lift it up and pull the hose out of the way at the same time. Just make sure it’s sitting on the frame as low as possible

    Very thankful for this video, especially for not having to disconnect ac lines or remove the radiator, which I'm sure they would do or at least charge you for in the shop. I had challenges with both bolts on the alternator but the top one is a real bear. Had to take off the top radiator hose to barely be able to have enough room to squeeze a multi extension knuckle jointed flex ratchet contraption that went like 180 degrees on itself to be able to get it off. They really don't want you working on these things. Thanks again man

    A couple tips to make this easier if you have a Quest: 1. There is far less room to work with than the Murano as the sidewall of the engine bay appears to come down a little farther, so you will have to disconnect the oil cooler line to the oil filter in order to get the compressor to drop far enough to let the alternator past. Might as well do it when you are unbolting the line. You will also have to remove the belt tensioner since the Quest only has the AC compressor and alternator running on accessory the tensioner sits directly in front of the top bolt of the compressor and the bottom nut of the alternator. 2. Spray the bottom nut and top bolt with a penetrant oil (I used SeaFoam Deep Creep) and let it set overnight. Especially for the top bolt there just isn't enough room to manipulate well, even with swivels. My bottom nut was so stuck I had to use a helical stripped nut/bolt remover to get enough torque on it. 3. When you are putting the new one in it's going to be very aggravating due to the limited space. Get a decently thick Allen wrench and use it as a temporary "bolt" through the hole facing out towards the wheel well. This will hold it up enough to allow you to get the long clipped bolt through the back. I found it easier to lay underneath and manipulate it from behind. Once it slides in it will push your Allen wrench out and you can go back to the side and wiggle it the rest of the way in. 4. For getting the top bolt in, especially if you don't have anyone to help, zip ties are your best friend. Once you get the connector and charge line attached, use zip ties to zip the harness for the wires up and away. I zipped mine to the EGR tube coming off the valve cover. Then zip tie the coolant hose coming up directly in front of where the bolt goes to the big radiator hose to the left. If you do it right the alternator will be lifted up to almost the perfect spot. You can then get your left hand down on the alternator pulley and wiggle it up and down while you get the bolt started. This job took me two days only because the bolt/nut were so stuck that I had to let them soak. Make sure not to go ham on the zip ties. Once it looks like nothing is moving anymore, stop. Also be extra careful when cutting them off once everything is in place.

    I'm having trouble getting that electrical connector off the top to be able to remove the old alternator. I don't want to have to remove any additional parts (like the fan)unless it's absolutely necessary. Are there any tricks? I can't see when I reach in with pliers, and I'm not sure I can get them around the tabs of the connector even then.

  • @PsychoCPU

    @PsychoCPU

    Жыл бұрын

    @@joshuaxochitl1027 Get a small, short flat head screwdriver and use it to wedge into the tab on the connector. You can also spray a little bit of lithium grease on it, just be sure to clean the connector really well with some electrical cleaner once it's off. There's really no good way to do it, but using the tiny screwdriver as a wedge while you just wiggle and wiggle was what worked for me. Zip tie as many of the surrounding cables as you can to give you extra access.

    Update edit... job done... didnt need the sawzall afterall.. i love buying tools and then taking bawhen not needed. .. original post... My quest is to replace the alternator on my 2012 Quest. What the blankity blank was Nissan thinking with this setup?? I am in to day 3. Hours and hours consumed, trying to remove the top and bottom alternator bolts. All the gadgets and tools, and techniques have failed. They are too torqued, in ridiculous locations, and I have failed to break either one free. Tomorrow, trip to store for Sawzall. Easily, I see attack access to the bottom bolt. The top bolt, however, will be a delicate cut. Hoses and wires will need ziptie tying back and some shielding with an old license plate. As for detaching the wire harness from the old alternator... that was a simple snip. I purchased a new wire harness with the alternator because I have read that they often fail. So the new harness gets attached to the new alternator before I bolt it in place. I left plenty of pigtail lead for the waterproof butt connectors I'm going to use. This job is frustrating, but not impossible. Oh.. also.. if doing a Quest, remove the air intake and top engine bonnet/decoration thingy? Doing so provides big hands more operating room when attacking that top alternator bolt and alternator wiring. And... bravo to DIY YARDI for this excellent video!

    Thank you for this video tutorial on how to R&R a Nissan Murano alternator. Using your video I just did mine and all is working well. Additionally, I did purchase an alternator harness plug. Glad I did because mine disintegrated when removing it. I cut, twisted and soldered in same parallel direction and covered with shrink tubing. I did this because butt connectors are not reliable and often come lose or don't make constant or consistent connection causing havoc. Again, thank you.

    Eureka! Replacement complete. 2012 Quest. 3 days. Thanks to your excellent video and the tool suggestions of yours and others. Both alternator bolts were tough to get out. For the top one, after ziptying the rubber hose out of the way, I used the 3/8 drive swivel impact socket purchased at your suggestion, along with an impact gun and several extensions. It worked! The bottom nut was rounding off, so I purchased a set of Maximum Impact Bolt & Nut Remover sockets. That, along with a swivel universal, 1/2" extensions and breaker bar leveraged with a 3' slip over extension and one big grunt... it broke free! One more street mech tip on reinstalling alternator. Insert bottom bolt, swivel alternator as high as it will go, and snug up the bottom bolt nut to hold alternator inthat position. Next, electrical tape the top bolt to the socket and add some straight extensions and then a universal swivel socket with more extensions to an impact gun or power ratchet set on low. Line up the alternator by carefully prying it down. Guide the taped bolt/tool contraption in and line it up. That hose is a nuisance but it can be helpful lining up and holding the extension steady. Let the power tool grab the threads pulling bolt in. This job was one of the hardest street jobs I've ever done. Congratulations to all of you for taking it on and wishing you all success! Thanks again, for putting this video together for us.

    Thank you so much for your video. You gave me the confidence to attempt the alternator replacement on my 2011 Murano. It was definitely a difficult replacement, but much easier than removing the radiator/fan assembly, draining the coolant, and worrying about the Freon leaking, etc. I'm an electrical engineer of some 40 years and am quite handy (replacing an entire furnace system in my house for example, no small feat) and I'm generally Mr. fix it. I almost lost confidence in myself and gave up when 95% of the disassembly was completed. A wiring harness bolt and the difficult to reach, top alternator bolt gave me a lot of grief. After taking a break and then stubbornly proceeding, the disassembly was complete. It took me about 7 hours in total to replace the alternator, but you were right, it can definitely be done. I am so happy that the replacement was a success. The brand new alternator works great! I didn't want to take a chance on a rebuilt alternator. You are a wonderful person for sharing your knowledge and providing guidance to the community. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just sent a small contribution to your channel. Thanks again!!!

    2009 Murano SL: VDC, ABS, and Slip, and sometimes BRAKE lights would randomly come on (or flash) and the car would go to limp mode. After restarting the car, sometimes it would work fine for a while. ABS scan: - U1000: CAN communication line - signal malfunction - C1130: ENGINE SIGNAL 1 - C1143: Steering Angle Sensor Circuit - C1109: Battery Voltage Abnormal Alternator test: - Sometimes, tested fine at about 14.5 v - Once the BRAKE light was on and the voltage was 13.2 v - Another time, with ABS, etc. lights on, it was variable and occasionally was 17.5 v Replacing the alternator which is very tightly located fixed the problem. I got a quote for $1400, which included removing the AC Compressor, and recharging the system. I ended up doing it myself using this video (THANK YOU!!!). The upper bolt is hidden behind a coolant line, a refrigerant line, and a wiring harness, in a tight space, and if I want to do it again, I will accept some coolant loss and will remove the fan. Be careful, when putting that bolt back, to not insert it at an angle, because it can damage the threads on the alternator. Apparently remanufactured alternators at auto parts stores are not reliable, I bought a new aftermarket one from Amazon for $140.

    You can AT LEAST take the plastic panels and intake manifold off the top of the engine and have a little room to sneak your swiveling extension contraption at the alternator (unlike as shown in the video). Recommend this sequence for reinstallation: bottom mount bolt with finger-tight nut-> alternator power supply (and ground wire if possible) -> take you a loop of nylon strap or a bungee cord and lasso the alternator pulley and pull upward toward good to control alignment of holes for top mount (pivots on lower mount bolt)-> get your 12mm deep well extension contraption and brace it against any available protrusion behind radiator and EVENTUALLY you’ll get it in (hint: grease is sticky). I had to come in at 45 degrees but if you have enough 3/8” drive extensions (4’ worth) you COULD remove the battery and theoretically go all the way from where it goes and actually have enough clearance to turn the ratchet. 90-degree electric or pneumatic with slim end would definitely help here as others have said. After that ordeal, reinstall a/c compressor and serpentine as described. I’m thankful for the video pointing me in the right direction but your patience will be challenged

  • @josho5108

    @josho5108

    2 жыл бұрын

    ^”good” should be “hood”. Don’t forget to tighten lower mount nut and if you couldn’t get the ground on with the other connection, it may be easier to do that last as alternator will be secure at that point. You’ll be fighting hoses and wires the whole time so count on that but it IS humanly possible. Good luck

    I just bought a used 2009 Murano for my son in college. The alternator was replaced right before I bought it and I can clearly see it is new. Less than a week after purchasing it, the brake/battery light is blinking and I can see the voltage while idling is fluctuating, sometimes 14v, sometimes 13 and now around 12 or less when I turn on the headlights. The guy I bought the Murano from threw away the receipt. Before changing the new alternator out, I just want to make sure if there are other things I could test or if the issue could be in the wiring...? How can I test the output from the alternator if it is buried the way it is. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!!

  • @thediyyardie7192

    Hey Jeff, you can start by checking all your connections, make sure the 12 volt lead and plug to the alternator are securely connected, at the connectors for the battery, make sure both battery and terminals are clean and free of corrosion and firmly connected, also verify drive belt has good tension, if all of that checks out, then its possible the new alternator is defective. if you have to replace it, be sure to get a good quality replacement, because you wouldn't want to do that job twice, good luck with that...

Getting the alternator back in was no easy task either... the lower bolt went in first, but after that, had difficulty getting the upper bolt to line up properly, I got my son to hold the alternator while I tried to line up that upper bolt, eventually shoe-horning it in. Hi Vinh, it sure sounds like it, but you should first check all connections to the battery and alternator, make sure no wires are burnt, loose or corroded, if everything looks good, then you need a good digital DC volt tester, you should test the volts output across he battery with the engine running, you should get a reading between 13.5 to 14.5 volts, and also test with head lights and heater/a/c blower on, any reading below 13.5 the alternator is bad.

    Hello I just replaced my alternator but my car seems to still be dying and not starting. Only starts when I jump it and once the cables come off it dies again. Could it still be the alternator?

  • @thediyyardie7192

    @thediyyardie7192

    Yes, it could possibly be a defective alternator, but I would first check all connections to the battery and the alternator, make sure everything is clean and free of corrosion and making proper contact, make sure the small wires with the socket is plugged in all the way on the alternator, also have a load check done on your battery to make sure its good, if all of those check out, test the out put of the alternator with the engine running, 13.5 to 14.5 volts is a good charging system. if the volts are lower than specified , its most likely a faulty alternator, most part stores has a machine that can table test alternators, I would have yours checked, and the new one too before installation, if this one turns out to be faulty..

    @@thediyyardie7192 ok thanks. I jumped it not even 20 minutes ago and with the cables still connected it was reading around 14v but as soon as I took them off it went down quick. I wonder if it could be the battery not holding the charge. But I’m going to check the connections on the alternator here in a couple minutes. But I also have another question, when the car is off there’s this clicking noise inside the car I have no idea what it is but it’s near the center console.

I am currently at a stop at the first nut on the bolt that holds the alternator...this is an awful place to feel like I might not be able to complete it because I can't get a freaking nut off, lol.

    Thanks much Chip, but if you remove the air intake across the top of the radiator, its held in place by two 10mm bolts, that should give you a bit more room to work, also its actually a 12mm bolt that holds the top of the alternator, I used a couple of long extensions with a swivel, that is how I was able to access it, good luck with that. let me know how it goes... also will try to help if you have any other questions.

    i did this today on a Maxima...they really coudn't design it just a little different so you wouldn't have to "wiggle" for an hour? stupid design if you ask me...also putting it where coolant or oil can leak directly into it from above took me 4 hours start to finish (way longer than an alternator job should take)....had to drop the subframe a little and the passenger side engine mount ...and I did take the little bracket off...and drained the coolant (all that was easy compared to actually fitting the alternator in that hole) .and it was still a total struggle with all that...without dropping engine mount and subframe it was impossible

    Hey Manny, I would check the connections on the battery first, make sure they're clean and making proper contact, also have battery tested to make sure its holding the proper charge, if all of that checks out, then I would check the charging system, it should be charging between 13.5-14.5 volts, if its much lower or higher than those readings, then your alternator is most likely the issue..

    Man awesome video! Thank you you, i have a question if you happen to know of anything about it, so i replaced me 2010 spark plugs fuel injectors coils, and did the whole mas reset but i am having an issue with, once the car has been driven and i park it and i come back to the car, when i turn it on it has a long crank like its not getting gas or power to it? I am also replacing the throttle body this week and the mas sensor also the starter... and battery, and thats just becuase i dont think theyu have been replaced and its at 140k miles just want them to be new and hoping the starter can also fix this " cranking issue that i takes a good couple seconds cranking til lit finally turns on. No engine light or anything is on idles like new. Thanks in advance bro

    Much thanks for the compliments on the video, two things comes to mind, do you live in a warm or cold climate area? these cars have a cold start system that increase the fuel during start-ups on cold days, that system could be having an issue, second which is most likely the issue with your car, the fuel system is supposed to maintain a certain amount of psi with the engine running as well as when its off, if this pressure is not being maintained, it can cause hard/extended crank to starts, there are several things that can cause this, a faulty fuel psi regulator, a worn fuel pump, or a leak in the fuel to engine line, this could be inside the tank where you can't see it. You will need a fuel pressure tester to check this, you want to do the test with engine running as well as off, you will need to get recommended fuel psi with engine on as well as off. hopefully this helps..

    thanks for your detailed responed man! So i live in texas where its always hot and humid, but i personally never had this issue even when i lived in cold temperature like wa state. It all happened when i replaced the spark plugs, coils, and cleaned the throttle body and mas, frist also changed the mas air flow boot connecter and also fuel injectors, do you think its possible to be a fuel injector? Because other then that the car was always starting right away everytime without cranking hesitation it feels like its a fuel thing because you can physically feel the car trying to get the fuel to start i feel like. Just random as to why it would tip anything else off as the car doesn't get driven too much. I wanna look at the fuelpump after i replace the starter and battery with my throttle body and mas sensor this week just waiting for my starter, also a side not what do you think about the camshaft sensor and crank sensor? Would those be possible?. Much appreciated again bro. @@thediyyardie7192

  • @thediyyardie7192

    @thediyyardie7192

    @@Aesthetics622 yes a faulty fuel injector could cause that issue, it would be a similar issue as I mentioned with the fuel pump, its called a leak down, this is when one or more of the injectors remain open after the engine is shut off, this causes the fuel line to loose pressure leaking into the engine, this could cause the engine to be flooded, which would create the extended crank to start condition. try pressing the gas pedal down slightly while starting your car, if it cranks up faster this way, that could be the problem.

    @@thediyyardie7192 could you explain more about the "cold start system"? I have the exact opposite problem. I'm up in Canada and my 09 keeps flooding in winter. • @thediyyardie7192

    @thediyyardie7192

    @@jordan4220 Your issue sounds like a or some leaking injectors issue, the cold start system kicks in once the car is started, it works like a choke did on the old carburetor type motors, it holds the engine at a higher RPM until it warms up. your car seems to be flooded before you attempt to start it, that would most likely be caused by leaky injectors.
