After hitting the power chord on the A string you can add in hitting the open strings once before moving to the next chord on the E string, if you listen close Marty plays this

he did miss a few things tho, the first time you play the chord theres a pause in between playing the chord and the chicky part, Kurt only play it twice. (the chicky chicky part) And that your supposed to do an Upstroke on the first chord.

I asked if I was the only person who called him on it, but he didn't answer me. I'm not knocking him. We all mess up, but on a 10 second recording. I would record it. Yup. This is almost unconscious. If you don’t keep your right hand moving and hit the open notes the riff sounds wrong. Great catch.

Glad to see marty still teaching up on here, he's the reason learning guitar was fun when I started 10 years ago

This actually changed the way I tried to play that song. Always thought “chicky chicky” was palm muted powerchord, not fully muted.

I palm mute it but always do it slightly in front of the bridge so it sounds more like it's full muted. Much more convenient in my opinion.

Marty did a great job but an even easier way to mute is let off of the strings slightly so your fingers aren’t touching the guitar but are still touching the string.That’s just something I do and if you are reading this god bless and have a good day. Guys Marty did it right just I was trying to make it easier. Marty knows way more about guitar than I do.

@@rustinpeace770 no he covered all of his fingers across the strings instead of kepping his index, ring, pinky on the 3 strings releasing the tension. So Marty has to reposition his fingers again when transitioning to the next chord. I prefer the way Marty does it because it is easier to mute in my opinion, but I want to try it the other way as well.

Also, after the "chicky chicky" part there's a tiny bit of open strings that it just doesn't sound right without. But for a beginner it's something that comes with time. I'd fine tune the timing first.

Quite a fact: When Kurt plays this song, he actually barred the ring finger, often times hit the B string on the 2nd and 4th measure, so it became a major chord instead of a 5th power chord (Bb5/x133xx -> Bb Major/x1333x; Db5/x355xx -> Db Major/x3555x) Hope this helps

E and D string, then A and G string (first and third string, then second and fourth string [from the top])

Learned in real time at 12 almost 30 years ago....pure wholesome moment of teaching i enjoyed seein in a riff i thought i couldnt appreciate anymore...that riff, song and band made alot of us fall into playin. Ground breaking in its simplicity and rawness alone...learned on a cheap harmony acoustic from a catalog...then on to electric...then on to creating my own music shortly after. A great time to growup in and learn it.
